Originally by: Aurelius Valentius There are a number of things in EVE that, IMHO, are designed to make people co-operate for the benefit or the use of things.
If you note this, when looking at the specific aspects of the game you will realize that reality, or untility is undermined by this specifically to force a team-work need in order to maximize or untilize, regardless of the logic or the reality - this is one of these things.
I have found this the only explanation for this and similar things - CCP doesn't want people to play in a vacuum (hehe) or at least if you do there is a penalty for it.
I think teamwork doesn't count because missions are how you get to the point of even accomplishing teamwork and there is not a lot of missioning that really forces people to be a team. It is totally built around making sure people can do missions in a solo manner.
I can definitely understand a balance issue, but as other people say, Drone ships will definitely sacrifice DPS and non-drone ships don't usually have room for a whole fleet of drones anyways.

go play in a class 3 worm hole with the sleepers solo see if you still think its not a good idea to have some friends with you lol stick a carrier in a wh and the drones go insane with power but then again so do the rewards :) .

+1 (for what its worth... which is nothing to CCP)
I think that this would be good. Gives people more choices (DPS vs. tank). I am of the opinion that it would not unbalance anything very much.
Also, drones target things independently, they have a sensor strength, etc. There are several ways to see this -
Order a drone to do something while you are on the edge of a POS, and the drone is inside the shield. It will attempt to do what it was told, then go to idle because it cannot lock the target.
You can also set drones to do something, then go inside a pos shield and they will keep doing it. (there are many other examples as well. ECM'ing a working repair drone is rather fun)
Because of this, having an option to repair your own ship (in the drone menu) would work fine and be easy to do (or the repair after being idle for several seconds). Also, you could not rep yourself with drones inside a pos shield, as they could not target you.

Some people say you can't because you can't target yourself.
Would it be so difficult for CCP to modify repair drones to have 2 options?:
Repair Target (Engage Target for a repair drone does not make much sense now really) Repair Yourself

I doubt it would take much coding on ccp's part. Drones have their own targeting system. And (combat) drones can target and engage enemies without the player telling it to. (or having to lock on first by the player)
