I am supprised CCP didnt add custom skins/ paintjobs, asfter all the work they put into the avatar cration system, to give people a sense of uniqueness, they should have passed it over to the ships!
I say custom skins will take up to much bandwith! end of story, since you will have to download everyones skin and people could make stupid ones like naked women on them and stuff!
But on the otherhand we could use the HomeWorld (great game) method, each ship has 3 or 4 parts that can be colored (main structure, then wings and fins ect.. then be able to add stripes and cheques and other decor for the last one), and you get to choose any color in the rainbow from a pallete, for thos 4 parts, this can create an vast array of different looks! and should be pretty easy to implement, and each persons ship could look unique and only uses a few lines of code to decide what colors that player has chosen!!
Simple, if any of you like this, plz reply to this post, we need our voices heard otherwise well never get cool options like this!

Imagine the main body of the Merlin in black, with each of the three pojnty-bits painted red like fangs.....Yummy.
Of course, anything to put colour on a Caldari ship would be welcome!
Bloody Moa's look like 6 rusty washing machines stuck together with very bad welding.

i like the idea - pixel graphic ship skins really would take up too much time, but a more limited set wouldn't. There are still issues, but they could very easily be resolved by one (or both) of the following:
1) Have each corporation have a fixed 'paint job' policy - ie each ship in the corp has the same 'look'
2) Don't block on loading the skins. There is no reason why they can't be done by a separate thread and then appear on the ships only when they have loaded. It may look a bit odd, but there would be a negligable performance hit.

I like the idea of a corp having unified look. The CEO could pick 3 standard colors and they will be applied to all corp ships in a pre-designated arrangement. Dunno how hard this would be as each ship in the game would have to be prepared to receive paintjobs and that's a lot of artwork for the art guy.
But judging the art guys work on the current skins, this isn't below his abilities by far. It would also be nice to see the corp's logo on ships. Even nicer if they were on the flags that hang off the stations.
Or, if you go with the calor pallete idea, please make sure there are no bright pick and yellow ships running around. If so, I ask the devs to group them all up in a corp, name the corp "Village People" and ship em out into deep space.

I think there are 2 good ways to deal with this:
1) The 'homeworld' style presets, either personal or corp.
2) Have the default ship loaded unless you interact with the ship in any way (like character portraits in a way).
Just my 2 cents.

I like the idea of being able to select colors for your ship-parts, very good, and shouldn't be hard on bandwidth. The corp then can also decide whether it wants corp-colors or doesnt mind if people individually paint them, if they go for corp colors they can either limit the palette to certain colors, or have a scheme for each type of ships (they probably need to hire painters then hehe).
What about completely custom skins, easily editable, with the downside that only you can see them ? At least if you feel like having a cool ship you can have it, but only admire it yourself... better than nothing. Or maybe some compressed format that doesnt take up too much space, and each player can save it (ie only one)on his player website here, and if you want someone elses skin you can download it (outside the game), so you can for example see all your corpmates' skins as well, and other friends or some well known pirates or whatever, without taking up ingame bandwidth ?

I believe that to be able to modify the ship colours would add a lot more to the game. after all doesnt everybody name their ships to customise them? colours just add even more depth to the experience
Ok, so what the hell is this Golden Ratio? |

Speaking of naming ships, wouldn't it be cool if the name of the ship was brought up in the info dialog as well?
For example, I click on Player X and select Show Info, and he's in a Tristan Frigate. It tells me "The Valiant II, Tristan Frigate" instead of just telling me "Tristan" --------------------

I agree to that Elereth, Plus a CEO should be able to designate corp ships, this could easily be done by simply disabling the ability to change the ships name.
Would have to have the option of turning it off, incase the ship is gonna be sold on!

Bump!
The ship description should also have the Manufacturing Corp/Individual in it as well.
I'd love to see the Corporate Logo on the ship (heck we had it on our shields and cloaks in DAoC).
Corporate colours are a great idea.

This suggestion would mostly cater for your own viewing pleasure (and perhaps a few corp mates). How often do you get the time to have a look at other pilot's vessels when you zoom past?
To further the unique flavour of each pilot I think YuuKnow's thread about custom information in the show information window is much more important. |

Actually I do try quite often to look at other ships.
Yesterday I was hauling loot for my corp and flew quite neear to a serpentis thorax - that one was in black and had blue exhaust lines - now that one was cool :)
To summarize the costumisation requests: - Ability to color your own ships using the homeworld model (2 predefined color areas on a ship; perhaps a exhaust color as well) - Visible ship name in the ship info - Ability to use your corp banner one your ship.

I really like the Homeworld idea.
Also we should be able to change character appearence (like getting a different hairstyle, or even plastic surgery)

I think a custom paint jobs (i.e. having bmps you can 'stick' to a ship) would put too much load on the server. However custom colours ala Homewould would be cool - "Corporate colours" and "Personal colours" would be great.
I also like the idea of displaying a ship name on the info dialogue

They should be able to do it like they do corporation logos.. ie made up of a limited number of colors and graphics.
Or alternatively the colors you select in your corp logo effects the colors of your ships. -------------------------------------------

Shipnames should definitely be more easily accessible to viewers. Maybe use some of that power you saved killing the green bar ;) ?
I don't know if you'd like this less, but when making a corp logo you choose, what, up to three customer colors?
Erg, never mind, the ships would have to undergo a complete overhaul (can you undergo an overhaul? How odd). But if certain areas or trim on every ship were defined as changable, and defaulted to the current scheme...
let's say you have some panels, stripes and a circle that default to Blue on your stock ship. The CEO makes a corp logo. He picks Red, Black, and Gray for the logo. Suddenly your ships' panels are red, the stripes black and the circle gray....
You are in a maze of twisty little asteroids, all alike. |

I seem to have missed this thread somewhere along the line, but there are some seriouslty good ideas in here. I'd love to look at my stabber and not think the rust will get it before a pirate does. The homeworld idea is great a few well placed colours would look sweet, but i agree than pink and other such offencive colours should preferably not be included as options

Great idea, just like the homeworld and E&B paint options. shouldn't be too hard to implement. _______________

I like the idea of customizable ship colors. I don't think all members of the same corp should be forced to the same colors though. It should be requested but not mandatory. Just think it'd be cool to nab a ship from another corp and keep their colors. Cro out....

During beta, the corporation logo would appear on the sides of ships. i wish i still had some screenshots of this. that little square paint job really gave a bit of flavor to ships.

Take the load off the server and put it client side, then.
In the 'stuff' folder (where graphics go by defailt), have 10 basic skins for each vessel type.
Each skin has a theme (camo, racing stripes, Racial, ect). When a player loads a system, the ships in the grid are identified and their default skin loads, that should take no more time than currently if the skins are on the client. No skin on the client? Switch to default base racial (like we have now).
Now, each of those skins has 'highlight' points that can be coloured just like Homeworld style. On camo, the 3 base camo hues can be adjusted. On stripes, the stripes and base layer, ect ect. This only renders when the ship is within 'look at' distance, which I think is like 100km.
The skins for every ship in a system are not parsed until they enter the same grid, so a ton of load is taken off both the server and the client.
Thus, 10 skins plus 16k color palletes would make for as much variety as the character portraits enjoy, but not bog the entire system down needlessly.
User created skins... an absolute no-no, IMO. Trying to D/L the skin from a remote system would lag everything, and would leave the door open for malware or worse.
Corp logos would also slow things down, as they are not [i]all[/b] cached in the stuff folder. If CCP moved every single corp logo to the client stuff folder it would ease up a lot of server-client lag. But it would increase the client download... by how much I have no clue.

all cool ideas there did play E&B and you could put the ship name in color you chose. But the server load issue you all have a good point there loading everything the server needs to client side would lessen the server load

Corp logo wouldn't be that hard to implement nor would it take up huge bandwith. It'd be like doing a show info on the ship you're faced with only it'd take less time because there's only the corp logo and not the bio, standings, portrait etc to load up.
Ship skins would be nice and the idea of being able to pick colours like, say, the UI does and maybe with some preset patterns you could select for parts of it. It would only have to load if you got within about 3km of a ship and then would stay cached like character portraits (if you select that option).
It could also be a good ISK sink as well - pay for custom paintjobs at repair facilities. Maybe it would be mandatory to have corp logo but then anything else would be paid for by the individual pilots. The cost might depend on the number of colours and patterns used on the different sections for example. |
