Thread title says it all. Sure, EVE is a violent game, but that's not what this is about.
I'm perfectly fine with all the killing, 'griefing', corp thefts, spies, <thing people whine about from time to time here>, etc. That's all just part of the game. Being 'mean' to someone in game is like being mean to a fictional character.
Someone who spent all week wardeccing me would still get no resentment from me out of game, because it's a damn game.
Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case with most people around here.
The amount of rage/hostility/etc on these forums is a bit shocking. No matter what someone posts, they'll get attacked as if they just suggested the sky was green.
Slight support for any PVP idea? Dirty griefer suicide ganking pirate who must be underaged and hate themself.
Slight support for any PVE idea? Stupid carebear WoW in space helpless tears yadda yadda.
Anyone who posts anything not a mirror image of our own viewpoint: You must be a troll yadda yadda.
I don't understand it. I've seen people wishing real-world harm upon people who 'hurt' them in game, saying they should be put in mental institutions, etc etc..
And generally, the fighting. Even when there is nothing to fight about, the forums are a giant flame war. Any thread that is good enough to have everyone agree can only be noticed by the fact that absolutely no one posts in it.
Seriously; look at any multi-page thread. Is it an argument? You know it is. People don't come to these forums to discuss things, they come to find something that annoys them and write ranty posts (Like this one ) about it.
I don't remember it always being this way. There used to be a hint of discussion, but now? Every thread degenerates into two sides covering their ears and squealing insults at the other.
Neither side ever admits they're wrong. Neither side ever agrees to compromise. Neither side ever agrees to disagree. They simply shout the same points back and forth at each other until a new thread makes them angrier, and then they go to shout in that one.
Why? Wouldn't we all benefit from EVE being a better game? Wouldn't everyone benefit for some legitimate discussion, rather than trolling and childish bickering?
Is it the 'pvp' atmosphere of EVE that works up so much aggression? A cold, yadda yadda, universe in game, sure.. but does it extend to the point where people have to do battle on the forums as well? And in any channel in game? Anywhere aside from your own corp?
Are we all so eternally ****ed off that we can't go five minutes without flinging **** at each other?
Personally, I have my fun either way. I do wish everyone could take a step back, realize it's a game, and not take it so damn seriously.
In before: x/10, tl;dr, cool story bro, assumptions that something terrible has happened to my character and I am angry, stealth x whine, etc.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FAKE EDIT:
This thread needs controversy to get anyone to post, so, I support removing lowsec entirely and adding gate guns to 0.0. Also, we need more elves, and we could appeal more to female players if we allow players to dress up their spaceships.
Also remove suicide ganking, remove concord, nerf ecm, buff ecm, nerf logistics, nerf stations, buff stations, remove wardecs, revert wardecs to pre-privateer nerf, buff supercaps, nerf supercaps, titans are OP, suicide ganking is evil, Ankh for CSM, bring back nano-ships, NOS was never OP, noob corps need higher taxes, noobcorp taxes aren't fair, and..
Most importantly...

Seriously, if you feel like it, try /b/ in 4chan. Then EVE forums are as nice as they come.

I honestly find them less abrasive. Possibly because it's hard to hold an argument when you can't tell if it's the same person posting.
Non-EVE game forums tend to be much less.. combative. And at least you see a -few- long threads that aren't flame wars. |

Because in most cases non-EVE forums have far less to talk about. When you can do whatever you want, and a few minor changes can completely destroy your way of life, people are going to defend themselves and not give in no matter what.
In honesty though, most of it is just humorous in nature. "Troll spotted" "Stealth whine spotted" are just ways for people to say that they have nothing to add but must post anyway.
Besides, there are quite enough things wrong with EVE, so we can't waste our forum space on "<3 space hugs" threads.

I know!
We can do one of those things where you make a page with like 10 youtube videos and each person is singing the song and when you play them all together it's like a choir.
Maybe we can raise some donations and give them to anyone who gets yelled at on the forums to ease the pain.
That way less people will be scared of getting yelled at and will post cool things. And like if there is a big rage thread we can make a song about it too and everyone will join in and feel better and realize we're all friends. |

I'm not too sure what to say - I have very few posts over the years (7!) And don't feel the need to respond to many. I suppose the only time I ever do respond is when I feel something is amiss and needs inclusion or clarification.
I'm honestly not interested in the argument though debate is fine and disagreeing is awesome so long as both sides are willing to intelligently debate whatever is the discussion.
I think sometimes people get caught up in the meme's And I always laugh when people go ballistic, BUT You are right, Though some of the other forums are obviously a lot better for this sort of thing.
Oh and you must be a troll.

It's actually very simple:
Because EVE is wtfpwnawesome game.
Within some bounds (ye olde sandbox and all that) it allows you to almost completely customise your playing experience to your own liking, and anything that kicks you out of this gameplay or which threatens the personal experience is more or less bound to create hostility. People love the game and want to keep loving it, but since it allows for such a breadth and depth in what can happen, there are tons of things that could potentially ruin it all from any given perspectiveą and the freedom the game allows means that there are roughly a bazillion different perspectives.
In a weird way, the hostility is a sign of health: it means everyone is engaged in the game up to their hips and that the freedom to forge your own path (which sooner or later means you'll do something that someone else most definitely is not going to like) is still there. ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

This makes a lot of sense.
In other games, everyone is doing more or less the same thing. Sure, you might be doing it as a WielderofPointyObjects or FireBallsFromEyes,LightningFromArse, but the end result is still the same.
People might argue that X can beat Y and that a class should be changed, but..
In EVE you have entire playstyles being argued for/against. It's less "Change your ship/abilities slightly" and more "You should not be allowed to do X"...
I don't understand why someone would take pleasure in trying to remove someone elses profession from the game, though. Fighting them out of it in game? Makes sense. But coming to the forums and trying to ruin their fun that way?
Seems a bit childish and immature to me. |

Basicly what most of the people already said... no consequences means ya can act like a douchebag knowing it aint gonna affect yer RL in any way. Some people are ****ed off after a hard day at work where their boss acts like a prick (such a cliche but whatever), their wifes didnt gave head that evening, some chicks are maybe in that "period of the month", emo kids found it to be pleasant after cutting themselves to suicide a hulk and jerk after it.
Too many reasons to be honest.

It saddens me that most of these **** weasles are just acting for the internet. Sadly, I'm not. I really don't like you, whoever you are, you're just a set of brake lights in between me and where I want to be. And frankly, this is in your best interests. But it is funny when you have a job title like "Games Master" that makes you think you're actually powerful or important and think that I'm about to respect it without losing a fist fight first. |

its because the net is filled with hormonal epeen hungry teenagers. I use to be like that to, but then i settled down and have a family and you realize how lame it is to flame people. Guess it just comes with maturity.
Just from my 7 years in eve in time i noticed the majority of asshats and flamers are younger kids with nothing better to do. Every family man i ever played with have been nothing but fun and mature. While younger ones in coms tend to swear a lot and be loud and obnoxious.

This here, plus, egotism runs rampant when hormones hit and nothing can slow it down until the self is extended beyond itself. An ego is fine to have, but when it is a separate sense of self exclusively identified with, then attacks are seen where there are none and in fact anything not self is other and therefore hostile. That's why children only like people who are like them and adults can appreciate difference. Yes it is too much to ask people to be bigger than that.

It is what it is basically. The extra anonymity of the interwebz can bring out the worst in some people. A lot of people who are being nasty when theres no need are being 'keyboard warriors' who, if you met them in real life wouldn't say a word to you. Having said that, i've read a lot of reasonable, fact based opinions on here and seen some well reasoned arguments. Could be worse.

Biggest problem is at some point people forget they interact with other real people.
About 99% of the ******s that act like ******s on the forums and ingame are people who will be real quiet and withholding in real life. Most likely because if they acted in real life as on the forums or in local chat they would get their arses handed over to them.
One thing I have learned is that someone who stands strong doesn't feel the need to shout it all over the place. It's the weak and feeble who have to vocal themselves preferably in the anonimity of the internet so atleast there they think they look big.
People who say that one has to be a good loser have to consider this.
It's way harder to be a good winner.
