You're an intelligent (most of you) and creative (most of you) group of players, so I'm turning to you for a brainstorm. Game mechanics!
Let's say you, as a loner, have come across an abandoned ship in deep space. Your main objective is to explore the ship and find out whatever secrets it may hold. This would be a first person game.
Run wild with it. What, as gamers, would you like to see in a game with a setting like this? Mechanics, story, whatever.
I'll start: I think the player should be able to float in zero-g environments and have magnetic boots to stick onto most surfaces.

I think there should be hordes of aliens that only sneak up and attack you from the rear. They will never attack you from the front. You can always hear them throughout the ship in air vents, on the walls, scurrying about. You never sleep because that is when they will take you. You have to see how long you can survive using food and stimulants you find throughout to stay awake, assuming you don't die.
There is a shuttle you have to learn how to use to escape, but there is always an alien in it that kills you. You don't know that though, because the alien is inside you, you did fall asleep, that's why they don't kill you.

OK lets look at what space has over planet bound locales. It has no air. It has no gravity.
Try rubbing that in.
For example, implement a small rocket booster, that can be stuck to certain objects by magnet. The rocket booster then fires for a few seconds. Depending on the size of the object (or the size of the rocket), this will either send that object spinning into space, or get it moving slowly in a certain direction.
You can thus use that rocket for both combat (ie, strap two to a girder and launch at enemy) Or you can use them for puzzle solving (IE send a girder into the rotating fan of doom, stopping it)
On the same token, a magnetic grapple hook would be kick ass. Under normal circumstances, you can pull yourself onto towards any metallic surface, while that item is also pulled towards you. However there will be certain places with hand holds, where you can pull items to you, or pull the held item towards the other item.
Also you could be the first space game to say "There is no up or down in space!". You'll win massive points in my book if you can do away with arbitrary up and down.
TL:DR pull and push stuff in zero G
PS Physics guns are cliche.
and further more why do i even need a sig? |

Aliens is the 8th word. OP didn't say it had to be original.

Ok. I want to do this in a game:
Maning my ship's turrets I'll bludgeon the opposing ship's defences into dust, strategically crippling sections of the hull which contain things that may be problematic later. When they are subdued enough to board, I'll grap my zero-g suit/guns, slice my way into the hull and first-person my way through, hacking systems, shooting the crew/bots/internal defences and eventually hacking the main ship computer, at which point the ship will be mine. Then I'll sell it for cash/kit. YARR!!
Worth pointing out that in this game, overkill is an option but the ship wreck you get at the end will be worthless, so you have to weigh your options regarding what to trash from stand-off position, and what is worth risking being shot at for. Also this really shine in team-based play, with players boarding the ship calling in strikes from others manning the guns on your ship, and hoping they don't nuke the wrong section and vapourize half your squad.
Extra points for making this a Frontier/Eve like MMO :)

Being able to dismantle and salvage the entire ship, every part on its own or in groups, if you can solve this programming within the decade then you might have a game.
Being able to pick up and use everything, with varying degree of success.

Designing my ideal Sci-fi game mechanic: She'd be hot, and would wear a tight tank top with coveralls drooping down at mostly waist level, short blond hair JUST long enough to be easily recognized as a female (though her ample bosom and perfect curves would give that away). Whenever you press the space bar/interact button of some kind, she would lean over and make a vague suggestive comment about her being tired, or innuendo about space wrenches/nuts and bolts/etc, while leaning over to wink or blow you a kiss.
Oh, and I almost forgot. I just made you read my signature. |

okay, abandoned ship...
the principle thing would be to make it an FPSRPG with a strong survival tension (not horror) aspect, and give the protagonist a distinct personality and spoken role.
All of the other roles are made up of the ship's AI, which has been splintered into pieces by the event that caused the ship to be abandoned. Different AI splinters are operating in processing nodes distributed around the ship, and each has its own personality. Lacking access to the central memory, none of the splinters know more than a few fragments of knowledge directly pertaining to the part of the ship they're stationed in.
The AI splinter inhabiting the main memory and processing core knows exactly what's going on, and reacts to your attempts to find out first with warnings and open statements that it is not willing to tell, and then as you press on, begins to take ever more drastic measures to try and protect what it knows.
Your objective is to work your way through the ship, which is largely intact but under total lockdown. The skills that will let you achieve this are less about combat - though that becomes necessary as the game progresses and you start running into security drones and stuff - and more about finding a route through the problem - with the right skills you can cut through a closed door, hack its control software, rewire the hardware, etc.
As the game progresses you have to deal with the AI evacuating parts of the ship, round up and rescue the few remaining crew, convince the AI splinters to side with you (or not) and generally carry out a plethora of tasks so you can access the core memory and learn what caused all this, and why the AI would go to such lengths to protect it.

Impliment a 'magic backpack' or plank bubble that stores alot more weapons than you should be able to carry on hand.
However... you have to assemble the weapons you pull out of it becuase you had to stowed them earlier. A small action timer bar will pop up while you under cover to assemble the weapons. Time your hit with the sweet spot various times in a row and youll assemble the weapon without a hitch. Not hitting the sweet spot and youll just waste the time on the bar instead Missing the spot causes you to goof up wasting more time than the bar you probably dont have.
Then you can make weapons built around this characteristic, powerful weapons can be a complex build offering many steps of construction and very small sweet spots. Yet 'reliable' weapons may even have one step large sweet spot step instead.
Of course the character will have a primary secondary and side arm at easy access outside the backpack, swapping them out is a pita espeically when getting shot at but the option is there none the less. Pre-order your Sisters of ≡v≡ Exploration ship today, Updated 24FEB10

'Highlander'-ish game. A simple mechanic really.. when your character is dead, he/she is dead. Done. Start over, fool. In an MMO world.. where the person that kills you becomes stronger, leveling up if you will instead of the normal means of killing NPCs to improve yourself.
That would result in one hell of an interesting forum to troll n read, so many tears.. so many. While people keep plunking in their CC quarters to be the one that topples the current 'Kurgen' to gain their powers.

you should make it that they can only get powerful off folks in thier 'level range' while they can learn new techiques and talents via npcs to hone thier skill basics until the have to deal with another player. Pre-order your Sisters of ≡v≡ Exploration ship today, Updated 24FEB10

No. No restraints. If your ass gets handed to you be an 'elite'.. well thats life. Only limits being one's own morals.
Learn from other players thru perhaps training through/with them, or killing them. Whatever. Tired of the endless NPC grind crap every single MMO has. Want to grow.. do it through other humans, not a binary unclosed box.
Talk about gratification.. nearly every game its to gain levels, items, crap. How about game where you take someone out, and they gone for good and you learn from that experince instead of a bunch of mindless 01101 creatures that do the same damn thing over n over n over. Every journey and opponent is different, and unique because that opponent has gone through their own journey to reach the point where it is you, or him and the real people you both have encountered upto this point.
A moment is what You make of it.. simple yet real.
