In my opinion, it's bad advice to tell someone they don't need PE5. Yes, you can possibly make a profit without PE at all, but it makes a huge difference and should absolutely, without any doubt, be taken to 5 if you plan to try to make money.
You can overcome it with a well researched BPC on ammo. There are programs that you can use to tell you how high the material level of the BPC needs to be to reach a point where it makes no difference between PE4 and PE5, but for most items you can't reach that level in a reasonable amount of time to be worth the research.
So like I said... you don't "need" PE5 to make a profit.
Cheers for reiterating that for me.
You can do production and turn a profit with PE0 which is alot less scary to a newbie than telling them "they need to train a skill to lvl 5 before bothering" Which is how alot of this sounds when people say "you need pe4/5"
Obviously PE0 will cause alot more waste and at best mean a lot less profit. But does that REALLY need to be stated?

Fail.
Its not about being elitist, its about not sounding like an idiot. I dont go into my local pub, full of farmers and their friday night sheep date, and ask for 0.568 litrs of Brains smooth. I ask for a pint of Brains.
terminoligy is all about context, and craft has no context in eve.

If it's not clear, my point was that, while strictly true from a logical sense it's not a good idea in practice.
I could say "You don't need tires on your car to make it move", but anyone who tells you that you should try it is misleading you. It might move, but that doesn't mean it's doing what you expect. You might make money without PE5, but will it be worth the time and bother? No. Absolutely not. Don't let people tell you otherwise.
Hopefully I made it more clear that I was not agreeing with you in any way, shape, or form. Ok? Great.

Basically find something easy to build in mass quantities, and look for a market. I started out with shuttles, they only require a supply of trit, and everybody uses them.

This.
My income jumped by about 3x when I got my head out of my a** and started calculating my runs by isk/houur instead of profit/run.
A good spreadsheet is allways nice, and if you know enough about your spreadsheet app of choice you can use the APIs from http://eve-central.com to update the material prices etc. for you automatically.

The word Craft makes me think of 'Craft Fairs', Craft Fairs make me think of Cigar Boxes with sea shells glued to them.
Basicly making profit through manufacturing is easiest with ammo, but the trick is finding a place to sell it. As you increase your production efficiency skill and research your blueprints your margins will improve, leaving you with more places that you can actualy compete. Sell your wares in a less well travelled part of space (i.e. outside of The Forge, Domain, Heimatar and Sinq-Laison) and you'll find that there's more per item profit to be made, albeit at lower sales volume.
Thing is, once you understand the markets you'll realise that you can make great profits by buying low and selling high. Vote Illectro for CSM5! Supporting the New Generation of Eve Players |
