The mail caught the attention because it was addressed to a slave, Slave Tama01 to be precise. He asked me to see if it was anothing worth taking note of, but I seem to be having a hard time figuring this out. The only content was the following picture of a piece of parchment: I've enhanced it to make the text more readable. It's obviously encrypted in some way, so that's what I've been working on for the past few hours, but so far I've had zero luck figuring out how to work my way back to the original. Therefore I turn to the public for assistance now. Surely we'll an expert in this field out there somewhere that can help - please do. It may be worthless or it may be vital in our efforts against the Sanshas. The only way to know this for sure it by figuring out what the documents says...

Of the letters that appear in this document, M appears 278 times (most common letter in document) N appears 216 times (4th most common letter) and P appears 190 times (8th most common.) The decipher of this is a 3-letter common word, assembled from very common alphabetical letters. The most common letters in normal conversation are, I believe, ETAOINSHRDLU in order of frequency. The string PYOS also appears 12 times. The letter Y appears 86 times (19th most common) O appears 216 times (3rd most common) and S appears 68 times. This is a four letter word, possibly less common lettering.

Oh wow, I was trying to identify that for a while, but couldn't find any way to effectively conduct an automated search using the image itself. If that is indeed a hint indicating the cypher used it'll speed this up a lot.

One thing I noticed apart from the fact it certainly isn't a readable text yet is it looks to me like the number of unique letters in the entire thing has decreased. Is that normal? There's only a hand full of different letters in it now.

He pointed out to me that there's 16 letters in the decoded result, suggesting it may be base 16: hexadecimal. Two more reasons that make this likely are: 1) You need all letters to use the VigenFre cipher. 2) Hexadecimal uses the letters A-F in addition to the numbers 0-9. In this text the letters after F aren't used either, but the 10 last letters of the alphabet are used. Character substitution has been applied to the numbers so that the text could be encoded using the VigenFre cipher. I tried substituting the last 10 letters the wrong way around first, but that didn't work. They were substituted in reverse as follows: Quote: A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q - 9 R - 8 S - 7 T - 6 U - 5 V - 4 W - 3 X - 2 Y - 1 Z - 0 If, after this character substitution, you convert the resulting character sequence from hex to ASCII you get this: Quote: Good day praiseworthy slave.
