If you join a corp as a noob it can be profitable, but 11 mill chars aren't considered noobs so the totally free handouts aren't for you probably. When an experienced character joins the player loses money. (technically) But it's well worth the investment cause you'll be investing it in a good playing experience. The corp enables you to make your isk but will not hand it to you on a silver plate. You'll still have to make it yourself. A good corp will put you in situations that enable you to make way more isk then when you soloplay. A good corp, even with a high taxrate is 1+1 =3
+If you find a corp that you join where you actually can make profit by just being a member drop me a pm.

The organizations recruiting seemed to have an average of 15% tax rate. Some 10, some 20 This is normal within a corp, your corp has a lot to pay for, logistic runs, fuelling POS Towers, maybe any particular programs which the corp helps its members out with, all these need to be paid, and its nothing at all when you think about the grand scheme of things. Say you rat (running belt to belt killing NPC's) in 0.0 for say an hour that can make anything from 20 - 50mil and prob more depending on what you get loot wise, so say the corp has a 10% tax, your getting like 1-5mil taken off you, really it is nothing for you but everything for the corp. Eve is revolved around is but seriously 5 mil outa your pocket is gna make you think twice about joining a corp?
- Willingness to help the corp during ops. Well most corps/alliances out there have involvement in 0.0/low sec which means there has to be ops to defend, or attack in order to stay alive in such area's. So corp participation is vital in order to get somewhere in EVE, if their not involved in such systems, then if they get wardecked then they need to do ops to defend themselves.
- That I be 'self sufficent' Isk-wise. There is nothing worse than people practically begging for isk, or asking constantly, usually those type of people are a drain on a corp, but most just need the chance to get out there and start making isk.
- What ships I flew (not what I could fly but what I fly. You can tell a lot from what ships someone chooses to fly, tells you what that person specialises in and what they enjoy flying, rather than telling someone you need to be able to fly heavy assault ships or whatever.
From what I'v read you don't seem to be much of a team player, you gotta sacrifice a tiny bit to be able to have lots of fun and meet new people, if your that tight about your isk why dont u start your own, free from tax corp, and bring in people who feel the same, just don't expect them to help out much.
Or there are a few mission corps out there with 0% tax and do missions/mine all day, not what i would call, fun but some do.
Hope that jargon helped

You know man, you really haven't thought of everything.
As a CEO of a few corps, I can tell you a few things about why corps are run they way they are... at least in 0.0.
Corps cost money to run. Period. Like anything else, it's a business. Systems and sov costs money and the sh!t ain't cheap. The 10 - 15% tax on your ratting is really a small contribution to the corp to help cover the costs of maintaining space.
The tax that you have for empire basically helps the corp make... well honestly I don't see how anyone makes any money in empire.
This is the essence of the game bud. If you don't like it, stop playing

I'd pay 15% to have friends if I didn't have any.
A corp is the most valuable entity in eve. Alliances and players come and go but a good corp can last forever.

It's really more simple, in my opinion, than most people are making it out to be:
Joining a corp allows you to do things you can't do on your own.
If all you want to do is solo mine, and run missions, then please don't join a corp. You won't be helping yourself, and you certainly won't be helping them.
However if you want to:
1) Have some friends. Knowledge, companionship, support, gay **** links (at least in my alliance). 2) Doing anything with a POS really (aside from research which you can do in hisec solo). Moon mining, t2 production, etc. 3) Belt rats with 1.8 million ISK bounties. 4) Access to higher than 4/10 complexes and exploration sites. 5) PvP. Everything from small gang to sov warfare. 6) Other stuff I am forgetting.
If you're flying solo you're experiencing maybe 20% of what Eve has to offer, which is fine for awhile, but why sell yourself short. I completely forgot about my corp's 15% tax rate the first time 3 x-type mods dropped from a 10/10 plex that I did with my corp.
Thanks to the OP for posting this, as I think it addresses alot of the fears that many hisec players have about joining a player corp and venturing outside of the safety net.

Edited by: Prissa on 23/05/2010 01:17:06 If the corp lives in 0.0 then it needs members who will take part in ops, are self-sufficient isk wise and can fly useful ships in order to survive. What you get in return, as well possibly as some friends, is the ability to live in 0.0.
If the corp lives in Empire then you don't need it tbh. I mean, if you're just going to run missions or haul minerals through high sec then you may as well do it on your own (only exception I can think of is using corp standings to let you place a low sec POS or something). Having people to talk to is nice though.

Thanks for all the replies. This last post basically sums up my thoughts on the advice given so far. I want to join a corp and I want to help that corp grow. However, I need to get something out of it as well.
Basically, I need to be picky about the corp I join and, if it isn't working out as a win-win for the corp AND me...to find one that does.
This thread has been very helpful, thanks.

THIS sets off my red flags. You see, IRL whenever someone brings up 'team player' it immediately sets off my radar that that person is setting up a scam.
In my younger days I bought that crap hook line and sinker. After some time (too long) I realized that when someone talked about 'being a team player' they meant for you to sacrifice yourself for no real gain. When the gains come...the 'team' seems to evaporate and the lions share goes to a few.
These days, IRL, I am very much a 'team player' but only so long as I see where I fit into it. I demand my fair market share for what I do.
This real life experience carries over into Eve :)

A lot depends on the particular corp.
Some corps may be perfectly happy to have you move up there, pew pew the rats, run anomalies, mine in the corner, and otherwise not interact with anyone whatsoever.
Most corps will expect at least a minimal level of participation. If someone jumps one of their ships on a gate, and you sail through that gate in a kitted-out gunship and don't stop to help, most everyone will be a little peeved. Usually you're expected to be at least nominally available for defense (not necessarily "sitting in the station in your fleet-fit RR BS, waiting for the go sign", but if a big brawl is developing, you might want to stop ratting long enough to help out, kind of thing.)
Most of the support you'll need is logistics. 0.0 corps almost all have some method of moving significant quantities of material to and from empire space. Given that you probably don't have your own jump freighter, that kind of hauling can be a big help.
But if all you're there for is ratting and missions, maybe you don't need a corp. You could always head for NPC space as a loner, do your own thing. Every hand will be raised against you (well, every hand that can be arsed, that is), but you won't be beholden to anyone.

For new or small corps they might go towards purchasing BPO's or control towers for that kind of thing or towards some type of ship replacement during wartime (which will happen). If you venture out towards 0.0 tax and other incomes support the war machine. People join corps/alliances for mutual protection and profit.
So, what I should look for is essentially 0.0 access and infrastrucure? That could be reasonable...
Dude. They give you access to 0.0. Sov is not free nor is it cheap. I imagine they have a POS there too, no? I know for a fact that they do. You may be in a fail corp/alliance, but having to pay taxes IS getting you something.

Assume everything which goes for corp doesn't really help you a much unless you're CEO or "hi-access" director etc. insider.
Most of corp assets get regularly "stolen" and portion of isk goes "missing" mysteriously.
If you're just liek missioning/whatever carebearing there's no use to belong to any corp unless you want .0 access when little tax could be acceptable even if it doesn't usually make much sense. Just keep out of fleet ops etc. which might get your ship blown up otherwise your wallet goes to negative pretty fast.
