Going to try and bring this back, we all have comps that can run this in the background without sacrifice to our gaming, I can run 4 cores at high settings and not have it affect Eve at all, pvp, missioning, etc... donate some cpu or gpu cycles to a project that is worthwhile. There is a pitiful Eve Online team that only has 6 ppl doing research atm, lets bring that number up... read the site and imagine if we had all Eve players folding how many flops we could achieve! There are clients that run CPUs and GPUs, we all don't sit at our PC 24/7 there is at least an hour of DT everyday install it at low settings and you will never know its there. Sure it eats up a bit of electricity and puts a little wear on your system since it isn't idle but you were going to leave it on anyways weren't ya? :) Put some linkage in your profile and lets get viral in Eve to raise awareness, the beer truck and bunny seem to do pretty well that way :)

Very well, I'm in. Been running it anonymously for a while, but now I'm signed up with the team and ready to go!
And now that there's a GPU3 client I'll try that one as well, but since my GPU fan is noisy as hell it probably won't be running 24/7...

I am tempted, but will have to pass, as I am also on the SETI@home project on my computer.
Didn't the PS3 used to have a folding@home option? I think they changed it's name, but isn't it the same thing? If I can do it from there, I'll join up.

If you have an ATI card 2XXX + then get the GPU2 client. ---

Edited by: Torque Daisy on 10/06/2010 16:31:24 the ati client for f@h will suck up an entire cpu core in addition (and is worse than Nvidia) :@ so i do Rosetta instead, leaving gpu free to crunch milkyway which is ballistic on ATI cards, plus a model of the galaxy is extremely cool.
if only folding had a worthwhile ati client, as it is, waste of electricity :(

Yeah I don't run the ATI GPU client but they are constantly improving their clients so I check in on it from time to time, switched over from the service to systray clients recently think its required for newer OS's but makes managing multiple clients easier. Might try the SMP client again but last I checked it wasn't as efficient as installing and running multiple clients.

Running the SMP right now, seems to be on par with multiple clients. I think I'll go back to the latter method, not being able to throttle it down is a bit of a bummer, I don't want to run it at 100% when I'm actually using the computer (heat -> noise).
Sure, I can set the -smp [n] flag, but that kind of defeats the purpose doesn't it..? Seems better to run the normal clients on 2-3 cores and fire up the rest when I go afk.
Also, good thing I went for an nVidia card then, works like a charm (about 10 points per minute \o/ ) and runs very quietly if I throttle it down to 75% or so. If only they would hand out more packets... Maybe there's a problem, maybe the test projects are done and they're about to roll out some other projects. In either case, I need more work for my F@H e-peening!

In my experience (folding on a 5850 @ 3.7k ppd + E6750) it only uses about a quarter of a core, but that will depend on your processor and graphics driver - make sure you have the most recent driver, as it can make quite a difference. For most desktops, it's still much more efficient (in terms of ppd / watt) than folding with the CPU clients. --- 34.4:1 mineral compression |

This client only really shines with rather expensive multicore i5 / i7 processors. If you do go down that route, a dedicated Xeon box can actually outperform the GPU client on most measures. --- 34.4:1 mineral compression |

As a matter of fact I do have an i7; a 960. Kind of an insane purchase really, I'm not running anything else that comes close to maxing that thing. So f@h is a nice way of justifying getting it...
I must admit that I haven't tested different f@h setups that extensively yet and you may be right that SMP is better than the others. Still, the difference doesn't seem to be that huge. I'll keep running it and see if the logs show anything. (see what I did there?)

am using latest drivers and an OC'd 4770 950/1000 + E4500 OC'd to 2.7ish :(
indeed it's still much faster than the cpu but i swear my old 8600GT did better that what i have now :P

Hah, except the GPU client can fold immensely faster, outpacing even the best 4 core processors. You'd be stupid not to. I'm not seeing anything over 20%~ CPU usage on one core when I run it. ---

All the client types are important and have their own specialty while the GPU and PS3 clients are faster than the CPU they are still an important part of the Folding project as they are much more flexible in the work they can perform. Appreciate the continued support we're up to 25 active folding cpus/gpus what have you :)
