If you could bring world peace or end all disease & hunger, what would you do?
If I had the option I would end neither, as they both serve as they both serve as good population controls/ means to achieve change.
But if I had to go with one then I would bring World Peace, because choosing the other would send the world into gross overpopulation much more quickly. Also, achieving World Peace would usually mean a single Government taking over, which is an idea I actually think is good. __________________________

I'd take the cure for all diseases and charge $1,000,000.00 per person that wanted it.
Business 101: they want the cure, they gotta pay for it

You do realize that overpopulation is only a problem because of disease and hunger. So, I'd pick Hunger+ Disease.
Especially if you include heart/mental/developmental disease.
Also war hasn't been a good population control since WW2, not enough major conflicts to put a dent in global population.
Also a one-world government is a BAD idea. You know those people who say they want to move to another country because they hate their government? Imagine not being able to move, because THERE ARE NO OTHER GOVERNMENTS!
You can't please everyone at once, there are people who will hate any government system. Best have other systems around should some people find it intolerable.
Of course the vast majority of people are obviously exaggerating, but there are people like that, they're the folks seeking political asylum. and further more why do i even need a sig? |

Other problems with overpopulation other than hunger are the extreme environmental damage you would get by increased pollution and forests destroyed for living space or materials. __________________________

Extreme environmental damage/increased pollution are again, only problems due to hunger and disease.
We haven't a lack of living space, only a tiny fraction of the planet is inhabited, human's just tend to cluster around certain areas.

war is in our nature.
disease is nature
i guess i'd get rid of hunger.
you'd have to make mankind extinct to get rid of the other two "A game that is significantly nonlinear is sometimes described as being open-ended or a sandbox, and is characterized by there being no "right way" of playing the game." |

I would give everybody a battle rifle, and train them in how to engage "beyond SWAT/SRT range", and a copy of "Our Enemy the State" by Albert Jay Nock.
After a few days of the worlds worst people being loudly hung from bridges, there would be peace.
But people love their slavery.
So the best hope for peace and freedom is a "breakout" of the human race in the future. Much like information has broken out because of the internet. If the human race expands into space in the same way, not under any "charters" desperately trying to escape it's own tyranny, then the race becomes too chaotic, random, spread out, and free to control centrally.
Then eugenicists like the OP can cry in their beers back on earth remember the good old days when elites were able to use empty rhetoric, nationalism, and religion to trick people into killing each other while getting rich selling ammo to both sides. "The 20th Century - those were the days" they will say.

This TED video The myth of violence hows that overall the world is having a period of relative sustained peace. And that there are many civilising factors such as global trade that give countries more incentive to work together than to fight each other.
Places in the world that still have endemic violence are where a solid rule of law for individual rights, property law etc can't establish themselves. Africa has this problem with rulers who like fleets of shiny Mercedes limosines and are happy to let their citizens rot. If the west is genuine about helping Africa then all farming subsidies should be abolished.
What could really destablise the world is terrorists getting nukes or a paradigm shift that 'democracies' can't handle. Imo the financial crisis is a paradigm shift. Because of simplistic naive thinking that is people should be 'free' so should financial institutions. Your 'free' (not) press will not tell you that Canada and Australia have largely evaded the financial crisis because they have tightly regulated banking. .................................................. World peace requires a better mankind, end of disease and hunger not. So I'd go with world peace as that'd mean the violent and selfish destructive forces of man are no longer in control. Once we get reason and empathy above selfish primal motivations, the end of hunger and disease is just another step away and no longer a unachievable utopia. -------- All I want is a better mankind.

Definetely world peace, without wars there no need for the massive amount of resources/science diverted to the war machines of the world. Those resources would soon end hunger and most likely put a big dent in disease too.

World Peace.
Ending hunger and disease would just cause massive population explosions which would destroy civilization, unfortunately :(

Edited by: Vogue on 11/06/2010 20:55:46 A looming problem is the rising affluence of consumers in developing countries. They aspire to the western and particulary American way of living and cultural example. There is no way say half the worlds population can have a lifestyle of western consumers. Of buying consumer items that are disposed of or sold a few years later - cars, white products, electrical consumer devices. The worlds resources could not sustain this.
Within the current century you will see the end of the current western consumer model. Your car, mode of transport you will be encouraged to keep for decades with refinement upgrades. And same for consumer devices. Western cities looking more rustic but really more attrative like Italian cities. The rich could still indulge in material excess but be taxed heavily for it. .................................................. Cylon cultural victor! |

Biggest problem with world is that us imperfect humans are in control. I believe a utopian world would be on run by one massive AI programmed to help people as much as possible.
Thanks to movies, however, people hate this idea because everyone thinks robots would be evil overlords. An AI will do what you program it to do, nothing else. Robot butler thinks "Why should I do what my human tells me to do? Because I am programmed to recieve pleasure from doing so, and pain to come from willing failure." __________________________

How can you go into gross overpopulation when you end all disease and hunger? Who said hunger was for food, it could be any substance.
