I've been playing Eve on and off for a couple months here, couple months there. I enjoy pvp in most MMO games I play. I can't seem to find a decent way to break into the pvp here tho. Besides my attempt at peeking in a low sec space which ended badly, and instead of learning anything about how to pvp, I learned I shouldnt go into low sec space. I'm not sure what my training goals should be. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated!

Join a good corp. The way to learn to PVP is to join a gang with people who already know how, like a trade IRL.

It's an MMO so yeah your corp choice is very important. But for solo, try cheap frigates, a quiet lowsec accord to the star map stats & experience, (jump in and) learn about using d-scan, making safes, aggression timers, gate & station guns. You should soon be able to start picking your fights & know when to GTFO & how. |

Go jetcan mining and kill can flippers. That's how I initiated PvP for the first time. (then I stopped mining there) -------- All I want is a better mankind.

Good luck finding a corp who does small gang stuff and doesn't just want "one more for the blob"...

find a ship you like flying , go in the ship and mods section of forum , find a fit that does what you want to do in pvp , then buy 20 of em . and go get yourself blowed up . each time you die ask yourself what did you do wrong?
i did this with kestrel . and it worked fine also when you get blowed up , do some PR with the guy that killed you , who knows maybe he will take you under his wing , did it a few time and the guys are still in my corp after many years

Get lots and lots of rifters and go into low-sec
Don't hang around in any systems that connect to high sec systems though, as those are the blobbiest. Go a little bit off the beaten path and you'll find some good fights.

I was in a great small gang frig roam last night, about 10 guys burning through cloud ring... and I'm in a 0.0 alliance that could be in what is arguably the blobbiest coalition in 0.0 - so small gang warfare definitely exists, generally alongside the blobs.

Edited by: Lando Haul****zian on 21/06/2010 19:52:37 Right now I have been focusing on maxing all my shield/engy/cap skills. As well as leaning heavily to wep turrets/hybrid weps. Is there anything else I should be throwing in the mix? (updated, it logged me in under my miner alt for some reason)

Navigation skills are very important if you do solo stuff. Better allign time and speed will help you to evade camps, dictate range, warpout in time, etc. ------ Make Lowsec useful! Vote in the CSM-Forum! |

Eventually you'll want to get Advanced Weapon Upgrades to at least 3, preferably 4. 5 is pretty amazing too, but it's a slog to make it to 5.

Depends on the type of pvp you want to do.
"Just go to low sec" is a horrible idea. You will enter, get "blowed up", and not learn a damn thing.
RvB isn't a TERRIBLE idea, but organized fights tend to teach you the book smarts of pvp they tend to leave out most of the street smarts. Still not a bad place to go.
I would join a small empire based pvp corp. Or if you don't care about hurting people's feelings: Join a small empire pirate corp.
If you still don't know where to go, let me know and I will help you find a place. As for training, if you want to be good as soon as possible: SPECIALIZE in something. Be it ewar (go recon), Tackle (inty/dram), Reps (logistics), DPS, etc. While it is fun to train everything it isn't the best for killing people. Plus it makes it easier to learn the dynamics of your weapon systems (but you will want to learn all of them any way)

Step 1 is definitely to join a corp that actively pvp's. Do some research first, check their Kill Board and see what kind of action they're into : anti-piracy, piracy, griefing, to be sure it suits your style. Having people to practice with regularly is invaluable to improving you tactics and refining your fits ( and it's cheaper than getting blown up). As for training prioritize small weapons and tanking skills. You'll learn more and loose less isk frig fighting than with larger hulls and the skills train faster. Next you'll want to set up a low sec base or 3. LOL, ya you got burned there once. Suck it up, it's where all the best action is. High Sec pvp is mostly douche bags with logistics hiding close by or merc phags who wont undock unless they're 3 or 5 v 1. 0.0 is mostly blobs and bubbles. Find a low sec area with good traffic but a low count in local. Have a spare frig or 2 with extra ammo and mods and you're good to go. You don't have to run 5 jumps for a spare ship and you can take fights as they come. Scout out a decent route, make some safe spots for scanning, and start looking for action. Pro-tip: name your ship T1 1V1 Have fun.

Tbh, you would know if they did.
Eve has changed from when most of us started, now days there are people in game who teach.
Agony Empire (I believe) do classes, as does Eve University.
If your really at the point where you think your ready, you should look into some of EVE's training corps, and see what they have to offer.
Its not as hard as your led to believe, once you get the basics.

Join RvB, learn the basics.
Do the agony courses. There is a pvp basic course coming up very soon - I think the 1st of july?
Ignore the urge not to go into lowsec. Just go in with cheap ships and a couple of friends. Lose them until you start to realise that you should use expensive ships.
Good luck, its tough out there, but a lot of fun.

Edited by: Sinja Nokujin on 22/06/2010 12:00:36 I have just come back to the game after a couple of years. All I did was pvp then and starting again now...
As important as fittings are, the smarts are what really helps. True, you do need an acceptable fitting but you do not need AWU 5 etc before even thinking about it. I would say to every player to get into pvp sooner rather than later. The quicker you start, the less of an issue it will be. You will lose stuff but just don't take stuff you are not willing to lose.
I remember desperately trying to get into AU /EvE Uni courses and tried to join every pvp corp I can (which is tough when you have no idea!). What I ended up doing is convincing some of my other carebear friends to get into some cheapy ships and hit 0.0. THat was the beginning; a group of 3 t1 frigs. We moved through cruisers, BCs, BS, Recons, Hacs, Command Ships, Capitals etc - every different one is just a learning curve.
Sadly, I am not back at the beginning in frigs but o well.
Some real basic tips though: - Intel of who's about is the most important weapon. Use alts if needed - Play with the same ship for a while - if you chop and change, you will not learn properly - Do not take big, expensive stuff out until you know how to use it. /Ragequitting is the likely response. - Use voice. - learn what you can take, what you run away from - research transversal velocity and its effects - /facepalm macro ratters - Learn to scan - you can do this in highsec - the single most important thing in pvp

I say the first 2 things you have to lose, before you can begin
(1) Lose your fear of virtual death (Podded) (2) Lose your fear of losing your ship.
Phase 1 (Lose fear of getting podded Jump into a rookie ship go into low sec and wait a few seconds, then wake up in the clone vat Update your clone, then (rinse and repeat a dozen times)
Phase 2 (Learn how to save pod) Jump into a rookie ship go into low sec and wait a few seconds. After targeted by pirate - Spam warp (Pod survives , ship blows up) - (rinse and repeat a dozen times)

Faction warfare, Red versus Blue or join a corp that does pvp and is happy to take new players onboard. Each a solid option, pvp is all about learning by doing, so get it done ;) -

Break into PvP ? Forget it. Rather, you should try to blow up other people's ships. Like that T1 frigate going for the DED 1 site in your neighbourhood lowsec system. Oh, forgot, you need to learn about how things work in lowsec. Like ... if your're on a gate or next to a station, you only need to be afraid of bigger ships, able to tank sentry fire. Avoid gates, by scouting ahead in a small, cheap ship. Don't be shy of using a plugin free clone. Get one free from Estel Arador.
If you learnt how to move in lowsec, learn abpout safespots. Oh, forgot the most important ... set up your overview. Don't be shy of experimenting with it, but you can just Google piracy guides. If you lose the battle with the GUI, how can you win against a fellow human ? Know your environment, have safe spots t warp to.
Than pick your target. Battles are won before they are fought. You have plenty of time to prepare a trap. They have seconds to react. Who has the advantage ? Develop the "get'em" mindset, manipulate your environment in your favour. Learn to use the directional scanner. Train up those navigation skills.

he got the same mindset as i do
to be good in pvp , you need to be ruler of your space . for exemple having safespot 300-400km off all gates and stations . if your fighting on a gate and **** turn sour you can warp at 300km let your friends (if you have any) handle the heat then warp back in for help , avoiding you to lose time by warping to the station or other gate thats 30 au off . if a gate is off your scan range try having a safespot for scanning it that is inside the 14au range . by being able to move around a system youll have much less problem runnning away from a trap or closing in on a target .
also once you in your ship keep remind yourself of what you can and cant do . for exemple : a thorax . is able to **** stuff once its scrambled and webbed down . so look for stuff slower then you yet worst then you at close range fights (moa blackbird caracal) those are targets you want webed and scrambled . what you cant do is fight something thats quicker then you and has the power to do damage outside your web range (stabber , omen ) . this will help you know when to run and when to stick around and that my friend is the art of pvp , i think....
