As a project manager for a team of 120+ programmers, id say its time for you to look for another job. One that does not involve such complicated knowledge like making sure the new setup works BEFORE shutting down the old one.

they didnt replace the servers, so there was no way to test the "new" setup before everything had been moved there.

CCP's own posts said there was a problem with the new routers, in addition to the database problem. Do you really think it would have been impossible for them to test a router before going live with it?

If you are a project manager of 120+ you should have the tendency to review the information available on a subject before making a decision.

Wow you must be one hell of a Project Manager to be able to make that kind of root cause analysis without seeing any of CCP's project documentation of having any real understanding of how their kit works. Never mind even understanding the unexpected issue that caused the unexpected extension to the planned outage.
I'm glad I don't work for you.

I once was involved in moving Server locations at my work, in combination with adding 3 new servers. And the Eve cluster by far contains more hardware. With that massive changes, you always have to expect the unexpected, and it's very hard (if possible at all) to schedule such work. Computer equipment, and especially network equipent and infrastructure are beasts.
Thanks for all the people working overtime for CCP to get all up and running again. I know how frustrating it can be when things not gonna happen as planned.
So CCP did right in my opinion, to expand the time as long as needed. Everybody wants to play again, but everybody also expects things to run smooth and right after that. ANd thet needs time, so we should give CCP the time needed. :)
This character also finished skill training today in the morning. But, hey this char is 6 years old, and a few hours with no skill training wouldn't kill me nor my char. ;)

Applications programmers are nothing more than code monkey's who are notorious for lack of testing and *****ing about Change Management. Systems Architecture is where it's at...
They MOVED the existing one, which obviously WAS working before it was shut down. You have obviously never been involved with a major hardware move. ANY number of problems can and do arise. I've seen many such moves in 30 years and there is inevitably unforseen but expected problems. It's not like unplugging a PC and movint it to a different bedroom. (Although that ****s up too).
The mistake here was haveing an estimated 6 hour down time which was way too optomistic. After reading the DEV Blog I figured it was gonna be 15 to 24 hours. 6 hours flys buy in minutes when doing this type of activity...
Originally by: Jason1138 "they didnt replace the servers, so there was no way to test the "new" setup before everything had been moved there."

Problems most always show up in Production that don't show up in testing. Idiot...

Most of the money we give ccp goes to produce other games ala DUST 514 / World of Darkness. Id think the quality and handling/bringing live the past 2 expansions would be evidence of that. Soon eve wont be the only game in the genre and might have to actually release quality stuff... Maybe update more than 1 ship in 6 months. You know what im sayin.

I will be furious if they miss another deadline. Because you understand, it's not the lengthy downtimes I object to, it's the fact that they keep assuring as that they won't be lengthy, promising us they'll be up by a certain time and then failing to keep their deadlines.
I wouldn't be nearly so irritated with CCP if they had just said "Yeah, this is probably going to take upwards 24 hours or so, and we can't guarantee even that. Best stick a very long skill on to train". Claiming you can move one of the world's largest and most complex server infrastructures in six hours was a disingenuous lie and an insult to the intelligence of anyone who knows the slightest thing about servers. I have a rack server sitting in the other room and a rule of thumb our company has for that godawful machine is that no matter what you're doing to it, always multiply any estimate of the time it will take by four.
Please, stop setting deadlines you know you won't meet. In fact, with this sort of thing, don't set firm deadlines. It wears out people's patience much faster when they're given updates and times to look forward to and have them repeatedly shot down than when they're told "we're in for a long haul here, go grab a bite to eat". -----

CCP offer up major changes to gameplay mechanics with their expansions (FW, sov changes, PI), it is part of what keeps the game so damned complex and deep.

So are you saying that you don't know the slightest thing about servers or that knowing 6 hours was an unlikely estimate you're angry at CCP for letting you ignore your own common sense and good judgement in not setting a long skill training like every seasons Eve Pilot does before a major upgrade?

As an IT Professional...Honestly, how do you propose they test a new set-up when there isn't one to test? This was a hardware migration not a data migration, of course a project manager doesn't have to know how the work is done...just that it needs to be done by someone else.
Do you recycle...or make a new tinfoil hat eveytime you have something to say?

Boldly proving once again why no one takes management seriously.

What fun with that? You change in the code, cross your fingers, close your eyes and whispers "compile, compile, compile".

Congrats, Server Team, on the move!
Also, thanks for the additional QA, and thanks to CS/CM for the pending compensatory SP for the downtime necessitated by the additional QA.
Big hardware moves are a p.i.t.a. in general. Enjoy the beers, guys.

I also want to offer my congratulations for a job well done. As for the whiners, look at it this way. If EVE wasn't such a good game, there wouldn't be this kind of response. Everyone at CCP should be congratulated, but it's the server team that deserve the kudos this time; oh yea, the beer too.
Way to go guys!

Congratulations, guys, on a well-managed implementation. Sure, there were problems along the way, as is to be expected with any implementation of this nature, but they were handled quite professionally.
My Jita colleagues report excellent market performance under a 1400-player load.
Thanks and Best Regards,

A little background:
I'm a sys admim for a global company. We don't have 200+ server techs with monkeys around to fetch coffee, much like CCP I think. I've been playing MMO's forever, and EVE off and on since BETA so you know I've been around the block with CCP... and I'll say this.
Quoted For Truth OP.
NEVER have a I seen a dedication level to customer support, service, and openness as the CCP tech crew exhibits. Especially over as many years as this game has been around. 'Old timers' like myself get busy, close the account, but always come back because I appreciate the level of work CCP puts in. This job isn't easy, especially with a bunch of Pebkac's that complain because they don't understand the back end of these issues.
How do you know they didn't test the router? I've tested routers, VPN firewalls, all the above, and it works in the office... then when it arrives on site, well, who knows what happens to it what with solar flares, evil hamsters, motherboard gnomes and nanites crawling around.
They give you a game where the software, upgrades, improvements, and additions are FREE. Even without a scantily clad humanoid on the sidebar telling you to buy some Extenze.
CCP is awesome, you did well. The unexpected happened and the servers weren't down for a week. If I ever come out to EVEfest (which I always try to do and it never works out) the Dev tables get a keg of Oregon's finest brew. Somehow I'll make that happen.
Thanks for everything CCP!

They managed to hunt down the bugged setting in multiple pieces of new equipment (and it was software, not even hardware, which is bad enough), so I actually think I'll give 'em a couple plex of spending money so they can get a round of Pilsner or something on me.
//Not sure why I buy PLEX and then activate them, I think it's just because I don't trust anyone involved in EVE enough to let them handle a recurring credit card payment. See, CCP? You've made me paranoid.

There is not much to say here any more. We are getting free gifts, so what is the point of this thread?
You are asking for a bit too much, wanting to complain and to accept a gift. It is time to shut up now or we do not deserve a gift.
And those who kiss butts, please, kiss a little harder. I am sure we will get a bigger win if you only suck hard enough on CCP's butts! --

i think CCP should send these brave men and women around the world to have beer with the players that they worked so hard for. Victoria Canada beer is on me

I like to say thank you to CCP, you guys did a lot of work, that to making an experience much better in the long run. Sure there was a lot of drama going on here, Facebook and Twitter, but the thing I noticed was that the vast majority was silent, letting them work, tweaking, testing, tweaking some more and finally today going online and I was among the first 10,000 plus to log on. Certainly in the long run it will improve no matter what and hopefully it will continue.

As a proud owner of 3 account for nearly 6 years, I agree with OP. While not everyone may agree, EVE is by far better than other MMO's out there, and I thank them for continually upgrading, updating and adding more content, and basically not passing any of the cost onto is subscriber base. Other games charge for new content to make up for the graphics upgrades they get. Thank you CCP for all you do.

If ccp wouldn't passing ALL the costs and profits they make onto us the customers, who do you think pays for the show, called ccp?
Anyways, good job Server-Team. Wish you better luck next time and if I may remind you: Timelapse suggestion of the Move I hope you made at least 'some' pics, cause otherwise it didn't happen
