So I found myself immersed in a conversation about roleplaying here on Eve and the subject of "Toon" came up.
Where did this term originate from? Doesn't seem popular anywhere else to describe one's character.
Enlighten me.

Toon is short for cartoon which is an other word for avatar.

First time I ever heard it used was on Toontown
Despite the way it looks its quite an amusing game. Kids were on the beta years ago.
Before Toontown I'd only ever heard them called avatars.

Toon was used almost exclusively when I was playing Dark Age of Camelot in 2002ish, so the term predates Toontown. It probably started in Everquest.

A short form for cartoon.
It became a popular way to refer to a cartoon character in the 1981 Gary K. Wolf novel Who Censored Roger Rabbit?

In Everquest it was Char or Alt - toon was never used back in the days.
Toon probably comes from those (car)toonish asian grinding games...

from wikipedia:
Toon is a term that commonly refers to a type of character appearing in certain cartoons. It can also mean: Avatar (computing), referring to the cartoon image of a player's digital avatar in MMORPGs

It was heavily used in The Realm, which predated EQ by half a decade. I've also heard avatars being called this back in the MUD days, which predate The Realm byà ohà four or five centuries in computer terms.
No, WoW is far too new and too derivative to come up with this kind of term. ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

Answer to question. AFAIK.
"Who killed roger rabbit?" ----------- Why is it called common sense, when it's clearly very rare.
I had a mind once, but alas, I seem to have forgotten where I left it.

The term "pilot" is far more accurate and doesn't have the Asian anime connection to it.

It goes back to at least 1988. I had a "toon" on BattleTech: The Cresent Hawks Inception. It is in fact an abreviation for "cartoon" as previously stated.
Predates Blizzard entertainment by several years at least.
This is clearly a signature. |

Once upon a time computer graphics were terrible, and characters/avatars were at best pixelated cartoons. Years later computer graphics in some games advanced to the point where they looked more realistic, and 'toon' no longer made any sense. This of course didn't stop some people from using it, but they are slowly being phased out through a campaign of relentless mocking.
My deepest sympathies. Prof. Tarantula, Esq. |

Toon is used in many MMOs still, not surprising as some people play more than one MMO.
Toon is still relevant in WoW as WoW characters are cartoon looking.
Toon is not very RP ofc but as the majority of MMO players don't really RP anyway I don't see it as much of an issue.

100% this.
BTW, I think everyone is aware that it is also used to mean "cartoon". The question is, why is it used to mean "character"?
I really think the word should be censored on the EVE forums. I'm not kidding. -----SIGNATURE-----

Indeed. Everytime I hear it I think of slack jawed 12 year old WoW players. I've been around since MUDs and MUSHs in the 80s/90s as well and never once heard that word describe a character until I came in contact with World of Warcraft.
