Back in Uni I did a 72 hour gaming session without sleep or food (poor student) and just water from the taps in the uni computer rooms sink. I then went back to my room and packed my stuff for my father to pick me up for the summer.
I didn't die (I didn't finish my degree but thats another story) and was probably awake 4 days total. I did however have things crawling at the edge of my vision.
This was the day of MUD's so I had to think the whole 72 hours too, not press lmb over and over and maybe rmb and 1, 2, 3 |

3 days without water, give or take 12 hours depending on how they have previously treated themselves. 7 days is average for no food, but if done properly, you can survive up to 2 weeks with next to no nourishment. |

Shameless Avenger wrote:In before "games kill people", I'm sure the news are blowing the story out of proportion. People die all the time for weird reasons, this dude just happened to die while playing on an internet cafe. He might as well had been at home reading a book.
I also call bs on the "40 hours with no food or water". If there's something you will always get at an internet cafe is an endless supply of pizza and red bull. I've been online for 48 hours camping a gate, you don't die. The toon does die tho, cuz your brain gets descync and time-dilated. But you don't RL die.
PS: I usually don't joke about the dead but since the story looks full of BS to me... "Did he dropped any loot?"
This is actually a true report: there have been cases reported (and widely so) about gamers from Korea and China literally 'playing themselves to death'.
If he was taking Red Bull, by the way, it may have contributed to his death -- besides the caffiene, taurine is an adenosine inhibitor (adenosine is a chemical that puts your brain into 'sleep mode'; going without adenosine long enough can cause convulsions, seizures, and heart attacks. |

It article says that sitting still for the long period could have created blood clots, that may have ended up killing him. While it's not impossible but highly unlike that sleep deprivation will kill you, unless it's drug induced, and same goes for dehydration and starvation.
A 97 year old man survived 7 days without food or water. Going without food, water or sleep for 40 hours may not be healthy, but it should not kill a otherwise health teenager. Lack of water wasn't it. Food wasn't it either, you can be a lot more days without food. Not moving for 40 hours? Come on! If you haven't stay in bed longer than that during hangover-recovery, you haven't party hard enough.
And no I don't think it was the tears. Had he been playing EVE, maybe... but he wasn't so, no.
Sitting isn't the same as laying down.

I'm not sure if we all read the same article, but for the people who wonder about the cause of his death, it's pretty clearly written in the article: He played for 40 hours straight, probably not standing up in between, then he stood up and walked a few steps. Then dropped dead.
When you sit for such a long time, you are likely to develop a Thrombus in your legs. Then, when you stand up and walk, the blood clot moves through your blood vessels and can end up in your brain, where it clogs again and causes a Stroke.
This can happen even within less time, for example during an oversea flight. That's why you should stand up and walk in between, when sitting for a long time - or at least move your feet repeatedly. |

I feel really sorry for his family. He must have been mentally ill or depressed to require such deep immersion into the game.
Hopefully there is a Heaven and when he goes there he'll have the opportunity to be the hero he always wanted to be. Maybe Valhalla. Yeah, he can go to Valhalla and kill all the annoying CoD fanboiz that are up there forever and get wasted. Pirates are red, buddies are blue,if you're unlucky enough to be orange,I'll f*cking kill you. |
