When a man of "unique" talents is saved from a savage beating by two mysterious gentlemen, he finds that perhaps being saved is more like making a deal with the devil. But does he have a choice?
"The Resurrection Men" is a new EVE Chronicle written by CCP Abraxas.

OCD... rising... must resist... urge... to copyedit.
As usual with Abraxas's chronicles, I have no idea what just happened and I love it.
Have H and B just used Rokan's brain to analyze systems? Or will his wetware get slightly "repurposed" into new equipment?
And the artwork is awesome. Hats and trenchcoats? Leather chairs and vague, abstract art? It's like the 1950s all over again.

Nice Chronicle, enjoyed reading it, altho like a few others this one really seemed like the first chapter of a greater story, any chance that we could have more of Rokans story in the future? Or is this the earliest part to go with a couple of earlier chrons I seem to recall involving involving someone involved with design/research, which were published in reverse chronological order and some while apart..... Can't recall the ones I'm thinking of, now re-reading most of the chrons to try and find them :)

This is exactly the sort of story I want to hear more of.
I'm just wondering if there is more to the title of this chronicle than first seems. Is it just a reference to them saving his life or could it mean the hacker from the story is in for some cloning. ------------------------------ God is an afk cloaker |

Well, the most benign interpretation of events is that the capsuleer is just creating an alt account, or whatever the in-game term is for that.
The more...pessimistic interpretations do imply he'll never regain consciousness. At least, not as a human.

He liked their funny speech, and the odd way they emphasized things. "Like a capsuleer," he said.
B filled his glass while H continued, "Yes, precisely so. Capsuleers interface with modules in very much the same way that we're having your body do now, albeit at a much simplified level."

I think "recycling" individuals in the lowest caste of New Eden's societies is a constant and interesting theme. I would seriously doubt every +ability implants out there are the high tech version of Quafe+. It feels to me that this guy (or rather his brain) becomes the lab rat in producing/testing +hacking implants.
I am curious about the nature of this unfortunate hacker's works. Are we talking about hacking as in traditional interfacing (such as monitor & keyboard)? Or maybe it's the hacking as in neural interface, which involves plugging implants into brain and then hook to some machine like capsuleers? I am more inclined to imagine the latter... maybe because I want more Ghost in the Shell kind of science fantasy rawr |

I'd rather believe they copy what they get from him, and use this to produce implants. My wild guess here is that it'd be cheaper to do that than to try to hunt down a person with the fitting talents for only one implant, everytime.

Strictly speaking, nothing says that the part of the brain responsible for consiousness has to be preserved, and the extraction procedure would likely leave Rokan in vegetable state, if at all alive. I have my doubts that extracting just the right neurons from a unique individual brain and making them interface with another unique brain would be more feasible than designing a normal implant from scratch, but fiction has a tendency to disregard logical implications in favor of invoking an emotional response from the reader.
Originally by: Chaendara Crowe Or will it be as simple as the fact that Mr. B and Mr. H's employer simply wants out of the capsuleer profession, and all those years inside the pod exposed to who knows what has degraded his body to the point it won't sustain life outside the pod and he is simply "trading up"?
Doubtful, as he could always transfer his consciousness into a fresh body, grown to be in good shape. Of course the chron gives you freedom to speculate about exact ending, but it also gives clues that hoping for a happy ending is somewhat naive.

Very nice chronicle, CCP Abraxas. Thank you.
Besides the "gingerly" storm (all hail CCP Ginger!), and a missing space in
Quote: certain sections of the brainwere capable of dealing
it's very high quality.
...And as usual, the answers given are far less than the questions left lingering... Which is good (unless brought to the level of Lost, of course!).
I liked especially the effort to give a believable background to the skill/implant effects on ship performance.
Always wondered why I could fit that extra 5% volume in my industrial, or have my carrier field an additional fighter, or my railguns use 2% less powergrid, if I "study" the right book for the appropriate amount of time or plug a device in my cranium. Ship specs seem very "volatile" in this regard, and the whole skill point mechanic explanation is a gingerly serious narrative challenge. --- Kat |

Very nice. I too enjoyed the subtle Men in Black-style approach. Their precise English and somewhat British/old-world mannerisms were appreciated too.
I can't help but feel that there's more to come though; that this is not merely 'we wish to dissect this person's brain'. That doesn't mean it's a good thing that he's found himself volunteered for
At several points in the story they refer to tests, and that the ones they're doing right now are just basic ones, that later ones he'd perceive at a conscious level. This begs the question as to what the more complex tests are.

Well, I guess this is NOT what everyone is intended to think, but IMO the whole process is passive and the guy is merely being recorded into an AI for personal use of a capsuleer, who later may develop the info into a personal implant or a mass produced done.
But hey, that's because I already feel EVE's universe is too unempathic and sociopathic on its own as to have chunks of dead people plugged into capsuleers for extra grimness.

Non of that. Naturally that good man will become a respected member of the capsuleers crew and a good friend of him/her personally. Not only that, he will also survive his time onboard the capsuleer's ship and retires at age of (five years later), rich and lives his life happily there after.

"Their first victim was an old woman from Gilmerton, whom Hare noticed a little intoxicated on the streets. Hare accosted her and enticed her to his den, where she was stupefied with drink, and put to death in the manner they afterwards pursued..."
This what Burke and Hare did to their first victim. Sounds somewhat familiar doesn't it?
While I doubt that this method of finding specimen for implant research is standard, I'm sure it speeds things up a bit.
Read real life history of body snatchers or "resurrection men". Then read Burke and Hare's story.
I'm happy I did because now I know I'm not plugging some dead person into my brain. Just wish they could release one chron to show that capsuleers aren't all bad... I'm having a hard time believing that I'm not an ******* in an pod.

They'd use is consciousness to create better equipment while they use his body for a clone for the capsuleer. __________________________________________________ HK-47: "Can I kill him master? I would very much like to break his neck, just a little, its been a long time fantasy of mine." |

Well, it's ambiguous, because on one hand they state that the guy and the capsuleer might actually meet in a creepy way, on the other hand state they need a brain to reverse engineer stuff and that he "could be very useful to him, and to others of his kind".

You can get the same implants from pretty much any corp you can run mission for in unlimited quantity (limited only by your LP and ISK), even philanthropic ones like SOE. The more you think it through, the more holes you find in the concept and the less believable it becomes. So while it was well written, IMHO the chronicle is an exercise in painting eve in its dark colors but forgets to consider the implications of the new concepts that are introduced. It is not certain if you can copy them at all. Remember they state the talented one (or part of him) might "meet" the capsuleer? CCP: Where fixing bugs is a luxury, not an obligation. |

I think you are reading too much into the "meet the capsuleer" thing. Who knows, maybe B and H are (like Burke and Hare did) only supplying the capsuleer with the brain to study.

I think that they were "testing" him to become a capsuleer and during such he goes into mind-lock which is described in this short story called the Jovian Wetgrave if you don't want to read all of it starts to talk about it toward the bottom two lines of the second last page onward.

I'm going to pretend they're mapping his brain somehow, and using that data to make implants. Or they're using the data to rework a module somehow.
I'm also going to pretend that I don't have a head full of Soylent Green.
And I'm also going to pretend that "meet the capsuleer" means just that, because I like to think that when I'm docked at stations, I occasionally go out and mingle with the commoners.
All this "Implants are people!" talk is creeping me out. |

My interpretation of the story is that the guy is indeed being used to manufacture a +5% hacking implant, and the nanobots that were injected into him are being used to simultaneously present his brain with subconscious puzzles to solve, track down the bits of the brain that are solving that puzzle, and prepare that portion of the brain to be transplanted into a hardwiring. That is, they were reverse engineering his brain in order to dissect it more cleanly. What's the fun of using an implant to improve your hacking chances, if it comes packaged with flashbacks of a mugging in a back street?
Soylent Green is people.
Hardwirings are just bits of people.

I got the feeling that "men in black" had found a set of talents the capsuler had ordered, but rather than hardwiring or implants, then a body to be jumped into for a specific skillset? I have different clones for different ships and situations.this seems kinda the same... srry if someone else said this already but i didn`t have time to read tall the replies. Great story thanks :)
