Photons...and other similar particles that travel at "c" have no mass and therefor CAN travel the speed of light, eveything else in the universe has mass, and therefore cannot attain "c".
That is it in a nutshell as it pertains to physics as we kow it.
There are only 2 solutions to this,; 1) Reduce the mass of the object moving to 0 2) Increase the total energy in the universe
Thats funny cause last I checked subatomic particles did have mass.
But then again there are some fundamental flaws with Einsteins theory of General Relativity that scientists are still ignoring even when I hog tie them and demand they explain it. I usually get the answer "Oh that just does that because we havent figured out how it fits into the theory yet" they just wont admit they might be wrong. Surrounded by idiots...
~edit~ Oh and I forgot to mention that E=MC^2 Energy equals mass times the speed of light squared.
Therefore unless the whole equation is wrong all matter can be accellerated and turned into energy, and likewise energy can be decellerated to be changed back into matter, the mass doesnt change though.

There is another pool of thought though that feel that the speed of light is not a speed limit but rather the escape velocity of a photon and has absolutely no bearing on the universe as a whole. ------------------------- There are 10 types of people in the world: those who understand binary and those who dont.

Depends if you give credibility to Tachyon theories - particles with negative mass. They can, if they exist as theorized.
Problem with that is that it would make them travel backwards in time, from what I understand, and we can all see what kind of paradoxes can come from that.
EDIT: LoxyRider, I'd wager the Hitchhikers Guide series? (Was a long time since I read them, though...)
Got to love that story about the cathedral and time travel...

Buncha EvE geeks trying to act smarter than one another. Classic comedy.
Some of this earths brightest minds, spend tens of thousands of dollars, and many years of thier lives studying this stuff in high end universities around the globe.
And some of you gaming geeks think you have the answer?
Yer all a bunch of looooosers. :)

Edited by: Dewar Scrabulous on 20/12/2004 22:20:52 Edited by: Dewar Scrabulous on 20/12/2004 22:20:19 E=mc^2 doesn't quite describe the whole situation. About half way down this page http://www.fnal.gov/pub/inquiring/questions/light_speed_add.html is a far better description than I could ever give, but to summarize....
m in the above equation is the rest mass so E is the rest energy. Basically, this is the ammount of energy a block of matter contains when it is completely motionless. If the particle were moving, you have to put in another factor which makes the equation E=(m/sqrt(1-v^2/c^2))*c^2
Thus if v (the velocity of the object) equals c (the velocity of light) the E becomes infinite, unless m is equal to zero.
In other words, it takes infinite energy to push anything with mass to the speed of light.
-Dewar Scrabulous
PS for Nerds: Incidentally, if something goes faster than the speed of light, the energy number becomes imaginary, but also smaller. Star Trek physics says there should be an absolute value inside the square root of that equation so that once ships get past the speed of light, the energy required to move them becomes less, and more manageable. Star Trek warp drives work by sending the ship into subspace as the energy required moves toward infinity, and then drops them back to real space once they pass the speed of light.
Edit: /me has some college time under his belt as well, and has always had an interest in Einsteinian physics theories. Of course, I yeild to the Ph.D. above me in these matters. :) Us college students have been taught well. ---

Which is all well and good except it still doesnt solve the age old problem that photons must have mass because they can transfer their kinetic energy by colliding with matter.
If your like me and just realized "Hey something must be wrong with modern physics" join the club. Its based on faulty theories that have been built on so far no one in the scientific community will listen when you point out the flaws. Its become a religion to them and are not happy when you try to tell them their lifes work is based on a mistake and they need to start over. They just plow on ahead with their heads in the sand. |

The scientific community can be its own worst enemy. Take a look at the peer review system ... how can you get new ideas accepted if they trash everything that has gone before it? How will your 'peers' deal with new science which undermines the fundamentals on which they have built their careers and doctorates? Your 'peers' simply will not accept it and you will be consigned to the margins.
