I haven't heard much of it lately and wondered how it's doing and how the EVE community feels towards it now several months after release. Is it still a joke? Has it improved? Just curious... ____________________

My impression have been that it's sort of a joke but with very few subscribers left. But that impression comes from these forums where everything is always **** on the other hand.

Quote: Acclaimed MMO developer Cryptic Studios announced today that Chase Masterson, the actress who played Leeta the Dabo girl on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, has joined the cast of Star Trek Online, the first massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) ever set in the Star Trek universe.
That sells it to me.

STO was a cheap rehash of CO.

For PvP it's still too much a pita to even get into a match. Though they have been working on balance.
Ships now have 3 interior decks to them for people who like to rp (briefing room, captain's quarters, lounge, engine room, sick bay, engineering lab, transporter room, maybe 1 or 2 more).
The non-combat missions have been improved and evolving (diplomatic/1st contacts etc).
Exploration has been evolving and has mini game for better finds.
There's a mini game DS9, (more of rping imo).
Mostly an IP amusement park pve game.
Imo, this should have been the 1st version to come out and still plenty of room for improvement. But, they do seem to be making an effort. |

Too little, too late. Aside from that, most of their "effort" is going into the cash shop rather than the subscriber portion. They're trying to make the maximum profit for the least amount of work, keeping the server(s) running with a minimum amount of support and hardware.
Game development purely for profit. They couldnt care less about the actual game.

Sure they could, it's just that no one has threatened their lives yet. And even if someone did threaten the entire staff of Cryptic then they'd be locked up for so long that they'd never get to see such a game.

Still have a month of gametime left but can¦t make myself play it, even though when I hit the former level-cap I still had some old missions in Borg-space left to do.
In other words, it¦s the most single player "MMO" I ever saw but with very repetitive gameplay. The space fight is what sells this game, and it¦s miles above anything in EVE, I give them that. Ground combat is clunky but one can learn to deal with it.
The lore and mission writing will lure any Trekkie in and is very well done. But without the IP I wouldn¦t have invested even half the time I already did.
This game fails because Cryptic treats THE SHIPS in this game as COSTUMES! Special buyable ship variants are even called "ship costumes" in the store. And that¦s exactly what they are. It¦s completely irrelevant what type of ship costume you choose, all of the three variants of a ship in a specific tier are the same. The current "NEW" tier 5 ships are nothing but upgraded tier 4 ships, slightly worse than the common highest level ships (tier 5) but with special abilities normally not available. Which also trigger way to seldom IMHO.
I suspect this is Cryptic¦s plan of actually reusing all their models, as currently everybody just leaves their old ships rotting in the hangar when they level up. Which makes total sense with the federation at war and beleaguered from all sides.
But what¦s most irritating is that actual ship stats aren¦t as important as the "casts" you use (bridge officer powers). Sounds like a fantasy MMO mechanic? That¦s because it is. Also a big reason why this game fails IMHO. But one can actually get used to even that.
Though the most important back breaker is that this game simply isn¦t finished. The available content just isn¦t there for a game that¦s practically 90% PvE.
Hopefully the small but very dedicated Cryptic team will manage to survive long enough to fill up this universe with content.
There definitely need to be more Spacegames in town than EvE. _ Mal-`Appears we got here just in a nick of time. What does that make us?¦ Zoe-¦Big damn heroes sir.¦ Mal-¦Aint we just.¦ |

I'm a trekkie, and that was the main reason why i hate the game.
Cryptic has no clue what Star Trek is about. Why are 99% of the missions of the type "shoot first ask questions later"? How is this 'well done' in any way?
That's like making a Star Wars game where the Jedi kill everyone they meet 'because they might be Sith'.

Game blows, period.
If the original vision for the game by Perpetual had been done right, I think we'd see a great game. Development companies not listening to their player base and running out of money during development time is what's perma killing MMO's these days.
Being able to walk around ships, having crews performing a variety of duties. It would of been an epic game. Unfortunately what we have is a steaming pile of crap done by developers who give two ****s about their customers.

Ah, righto. Thnx for showing the other really annoying part of the game (well forum game).
All the fricken Trekkies constantly whining about their very own favorite part of the vast Trek lore being stomped on by ebil Cryptic. Some seriously want to fly around in Kirk¦s Connie and fight alongside advanced ships like the Sovereign Enterprise-E (from the movies). They even whine about their beloved costumes from this or that era not available in game, or BEING available in game and breaking it. Though in fact Cryptic has that part pretty much covered, as the game is mainly about costumes anyway.
As for the esteemed quoted poster, what part of "Federation at war with fracking EVERYBODY" don¦t you understand? The only ones on their side are the Ferengis and what¦s left of Cardassia after the Dominion war(DS9). Also they have now introduced diplomacy missions because of exactly these complaints. A whopping 5 of them and the odd non fighting one now giving xp for that too.
To anybody actually interested in the ships, here¦s a poster explaining everything you need to know about them. http://suricatasblog.wordpress.com/star-trek-online-ship-tier-chart/ _ Mal-`Appears we got here just in a nick of time. Sorry, but pure BS!
Perpetual didn¦t do ****all during the years they acted like developing the game.
All they had to show for when Cryptic took over was some concept art, a couple of ship models and a vague idea of the ships as mini cities in space where most every body willingly would like to NOT be the captain. Wasting their time on some stupid mini-game while the captain was the only one actually flying the ship in a battle. Cryptic then had to pick up this steaming pile of turd and turn it into something playable in about 18 months of actual development time.
Where was EVE again after a year and a half from inception? _ Mal-`Appears we got here just in a nick of time. What does that make us?¦ Zoe-¦Big damn heroes sir.¦ Mal-¦Aint we just.¦ |

As I said vision, not development, the development of it was BS including the screen shots. I just think the idea of working together as group on one ship would of been unique. STO now is wow in space, no real exploration and the missions are dumb, the multiplayer aspect of the game is weak, pvp is mostly a joke.

1) They're not whining about not having everything from every era, they're whining about not seeing any Star Trek in this game. References don't make it stand on it's own.
2) Thing is, the reasons for the war are convoluted at best. "Shoot first ask questions later" is never, ever how the Federation operates, but it's what you have to do to advance in the game. I don't understand how you can't see this.
Fact is, EVE is more like Star Trek than STO, in many ways. Or are you saying that all you ever wanted from STO is to be WoW in space?

Edited by: Toshiro GreyHawk on 01/08/2010 16:48:57 Eh ....
Haven't played this or any of the other Movie/TV Franchise games.
All in all - except for exploiting the player base - I don't see a reason for these games.
Mostly the reason the franchise was successful - was because of the characters in it. Welll ... those characters are not going to be in these games in any useful way.
The other thing is ... I've known some Trekkers and some Star Wars fans and ... they are NOT easily satisfied ... You would think that this natural player base of millions of fans would make such games an instant success - but it obviously does not. Especially after getting burned by some previous attempts ... many if not most of these fans ... don't want to be involved.
Also ... it seems to me ... that games about movies have done about as well as movies about games ...
What may be fun to watch ... may not be so much fun to play - and vice versa. Movies are passive entertainment - Games are participative.
Even Angelina Jolie couldn't save the Tomb Raider movie - though she was perfectly cast.
The central flaw in SWG was - the heros in the movies were mostly Jedi - and almost everyone playing the game - wanted to be a Jedi ... The thing was - given the cannon from the movies and books - Jedi were born - not made, so you couldn't level up to be a Jedi - and hardly anybody - in cannon - was born a Jedi. So - anything they did to increase the number of Jedi - would ruin the integrity of the game - which it did. Then - with the games integrity ruined - the player base was alienated. You see - the player base didn't want EVERYONE to be a Jedi - they just wanted THEMSELVES to be a Jedi ...
The point made about a crew served ship has some validity. It isn't that it can't be done ... it's just that you really have to have something for all those people - other than the Captain - to do (besides emote "I'm given 'er all she's got Cap'n!"). Of course - the Captain - didn't actually steer the ship - the Helmsman steered the ship. So if they've got the Captain steering - then they've screwed up already. Here - you've got a gigantic problem - in that the crew of even a pixelated star ship has to become a team to work well - and most computer game vehicles/organizations ... mostly ... have pick up crews that might change constantly during the course of play.
Captain: "Fire the Photon Torpedoes!"
Helmsman: "We can't Captain ... the Torpedoman had to eat dinner."
Captain: "Fire Phasers!"
Helmsman: "Uh ... we can't do that either ... the Weapons Officer is the Torpedoman's sister and ... they're both eating dinner ... they'll be back in about twenty minutes ... or so ..."
Captain: "Reverse Course! Evasive Maneuvers!"
Helmsman: "Aye Captain! ... Uh ... yes dear ... Alright! Alright! ..."
Captain: "Helmsman? ... Helmsman? ... Helmsman? ..."
*shrug*

There is a game that offers a Star Trek like experience that allows you to walk around inside the ship with numerous crew. graphics are crap, UI is crap, but grief potential is really high. Starquest or something like that.
