A billion extended downtimes in a month due to unexplained 'database' issues.
My clone resetting itself without cause from 54.6m SP to 2.8m SP, with no rhyme or reason behind it while I am roaming.
My corpmate and friend having his skills mysteriously vanish mid-warp, leaving him trapped in space in a ship he suddenly could no longer use.
Items and modules mysteriously disappearing when being removed or fitted to ships.
RNG Dicerolls being hosted clientside rather than serverside.
Python injection exploits being utilised and manipulated by countless powerbrokers and grifters.
And yet Incarna and DUST have yet to be put on the backburner in favour of more pressing issues.
What is going on, CCP? What is going on? -------- ¦ |

thats like im sick of people standing up for them when its evident that CCP have serious flaws in their organisation but people still think the sun shines out of their ass.
And I'm sick of people who actually think you can have the #1 MMORPG of all time and be fail. Granted, the standards aren't high, but seriously.
I won't say that the devs don't spend too much time tinkering with the game itself (yay nerfbat), but I will say, as supporting their product goes, they win. If a downtime gets REALLY extended, we get SP. They down their servers once a day just to make sure the other 23 hours aren't living hell for the players. They listen to all sides of arguments, particularly nowadays, and know when to tell the carebears to kiss it. They maintain the only true PvP major MMORPG and their content releases aren't just lousy mohawk grenades, they provide entire new gaming experiences.
Let's compare with others:
Blizzard: If WoW has a problem, they don't halt everything and fix it, they wait a patch cycle. So you're stuck with that issue for a month or two until they feel like they'll lose money over it. The skills themselves cap quickly and if you're more than a weekend-warrior gamer, you quickly discover the only redeeming value it still has, is that Felicia Day plays it. Further, when patch day does hit, which is only common enough to be frustrating, you get to let your computer download it all day. Fun. Even if not, you still get to wait for their servers to come back up.
Linden Labs: OK so Second Life isn't so much a game, but the system concept is the same. Terrible lag, difficulties with openGL implementations, and horrible physics implementation plague it and have for *years*. Rather than release blogs before a patch that say what an update will do, they promise it months (in some case years) in advance and then fail to deliver.
Guild Wars: $50+ one-time purchase because it's pretty, and it's fun for the cost of the box. You wont' spend years on it like here. Issues? Talk about your distant patches, if they come at all.
EQII: The sequel to the game that started it all, and the symbol of fail that handed the flag of fantasy MMOs over to Blizzard. Buggy, graphically glitchy at inception, card driver issues, etc. even appear now. Plus my ex plays it and she's fail.
Final Fantasy XI: I was so excited to ride a Chocobo after years of playing the games. Instead I found myself playing gender-neutral badly animated avatars in a world of 12 entities with different skinning. The only fun part was the feeling of exploration and travel, and at one point, this was gouged.
On that last one, really anything SoE is fail. Anyone who got hit by the SWG "reset" will tell you that.
You might not like having to go out in the sun for a couple of hours, but CCP is the best of the business. They could do better, but any business *could*. It's just not profitable to do it. What they do, they do well, and when they hose it, they shut things down before they get worse. I agree with that mode of thinking.

STOP whinging I'm really getting fed up of just seeing whinging comments from people who have no idea of how much work and effort is put into EVE by the people who play it and the people who run it.
CCP isn't trying to screw you over, isn't trying to hurt your kids and isn't trying to steal money from you
Take your emoing to somewhere more approriate like Hello Kitty World or some free to play game if you don't like what they are doing.
Yes I agree that CCP is not intentionally trying to mess with the player base. But when looking at the amount of mornings the DT is completed and subsequently the taken down indicates a chronic problem more than an anomaly.
Having watched CCP get absolutely blasted yesterday on Massively.com, hopefully these things will get more broader attention by Senior Management. IÆve only been playing for about 9 months now but after reading this article, I have a better understanding why no one wants to walk in space stations and they really want the existing content reviewed/fixed first. They want subscriber growth, but based the fact that each expansion creates more problems than it solves.
(Dominion) Lag Increase. (Tyrannis) Big Fleet Fights nearly impossible due to lag, PI pushed out in a horribly incomplete and tedious (wont try to rant that one out), consistent database issues.
My corp mates keep telling me I am missing the good ol days of Apoc expansion when everything worked. IÆm starting to understand their angst.
Seriously hope itÆs not going to take sooo much bad publicity about the game that itÆs going to be like Apple where they lose 14Bil in market cap before they come out and address the problem. On a last note, and something to think about CCP, no oneÆs going to walk in the god damn space station if you have such bad PR no one wants to bother with Eve at all. If I was an MMO player and not yet tried playing Eve Online, I wouldnÆt even think about touching the game based on what the media is now covering.

Change Control not your thing huh?
But it is part of mine. If a change is sheduled to take a minimum of 1 hour (including its testing) it takes a minimum of 1 hour for the service to be made publicly avaliable again.
Stating that it was still in the change window and all bets are off, whilst customers are logging in is dubious at best and poor change control/server maintenance practices at worse.
We are more than happy to wait for the cluster to finish its checks and balances. We're not happy when it fakes doing so and decides to go up and down like a prostitutes knickers.

im pretty sure a "mechanic" would be pretty useless in this environment. Perhaps your referring to an engineer with the technical expertise to troubleshoot the database issues we are experiencing? This is sometimes known as a PROGRAMMER, or various other terms.
so before you start whining and swearing on the forums at CCP at least demonstrate you know the difference between a MECHANIC and a DATABASE EXPERT.

Dear CCP,
How about writing up a brief bit on what's up with the recent database issues (w/o giving away secret proprietary info)? 'Goes a long way towards quelling the flames and trolling and it is what makes EVE so attractive to those who do not drag their knuckles when walking [not in stations] around.
Thanks in advance.

As the CISO of an internationaly operating company I'll make an educated guess here... The occurance of those issues is a result of this:
Quote:
Python injection exploits being utilised and manipulated by countless powerbrokers and grifters.
I won't go into the technical details but, considering the age of Eve, the potential to mess up the database by manipulating the client is probably huge.

Edited by: Corvus Dove on 03/08/2010 12:48:27 I find that people who think like that are the same ones who think that if a person can fix a computer, they can also fix a printer, copying machine, toaster, coffee maker, network the entire building, fix a car stereo, or hack into a 128-bit encrypted database because some dip**** lost their password.
Edit: Referring to the mechanic bit. Damn forums didn't keep the quote. ------------------------------------ I like long walks, a good book before bed, and human entrails served cold with a side order of scrap metal. |

Originally by: Serial Driller Edited by: Serial Driller on 03/08/2010 12:37:56 I had just jumped into a level 2 mission called "Recon (1 of 3)". I didn't bother to bring a ship that would actually be able to take on the ships in the pocket because all I really needed to do was rush the gate and hold out till I reached it. Half way to the gate, I get the 20 second notice. Time to decide.. ..jump to a station or continue to the gate. I stay on course and make it to the gate. I make the jump, then realize the next pocket is even more loaded with nasties. I target a station and initiate a jump.. ..game shuts down. Hope my Thorax is there when I get back.
Could have been worse, I suppose. I could've been on part 3 of 3. That's where you are in a toxic cloud that does progressively worse damage to your ship.
40 seconds? Really???
Well mate, if you're in a Thorax that can't tank a L2 mission, even if fit for speed, you're doing something terribly wrong! :) I was doing L3s in my Incursus, so you have something going sideways
The last pocket would be better as you'd e-warp and be done with it.
