Edited by: ArcDragon on 12/08/2010 22:34:37 By now, a lot of pilots have heard of the Kestrel carrying 74 plexes being destroyed. I can confirm that this is not a hoax.
http://ad0pt.evekb.co.uk/?a=kill_detail&kll_id=1539031
A month ago this would not have been possible, but with a recent change in policy allowing these items to leave stations and thusly be fully lootable it has finally happened an a scale that should not be ignored.
Some will say, "He's an idiot for doing that."
Others will say, "Wow, sucks to be him!"
That is NOT what this thread is about.
I say that CCP put plexes in the game and the protection they gave them was correct. I say they are a binding contract, which roughly tranlated means, one plex for one month of game play. Game play represents CCP's obligation to allow a player access to the Eve servers, usually at a price of about $15 a month.
In this case, CCP made it possible to get about $1200 to $1300 USD and not have to honor the contracts!
To me, this policy makes CCP look bad, REAL bad. As in they put an item in the game knowing full well that it could be destroyed and did nothing about it even though it DIRECTLY represented free money, I mean, money. If it has a SAVE button...I'm not interested. |

It has been said and will be said again:
When you choose to convert it into a ingame items you and just you are responsible for them, You could have used it but you didn't.

You're misinterpreting the contract terms. The contract was complete when CCP generated the in-game item, not when the item is "used".

Pretty much this. They are selling you the possibility of 30 days of game time, how you (or anyone) chooses to use that is beyond their control. When they sell you the plex, the service is complete. .

Only if you're small minded and hard of thinking does it make them look bad. They have done nothing shady here in the least. They sold a service, they honoured that service (because the plex's WERE in the guys hold, right?), some cretin makes a mistake - and that's their fault how, exactly?
So many people, like yourself, are acting as if the $1200 that was 'destroyed' went to the CCP beer and hooker fund and they're out living large on someone's mistake.
Service was provided honestly and with good faith. End user was an idiot.
Explain to me again how this is CCP's fault or how they reneged on a deal, as I just can't seem to grasp the logic behind this. .

All of this "moral conundrum" can be solved quite easily...
...have CCP set up a charity fund that gets filled with the RL money counter-value of destroyed PLEX, and have the CSM decide (or have a general public vote) to which charity or to which aid the funds should be donated to (on a more or less regular basis).

When you buy a plex (or gtc then convert to plex to be exact), with RL money, you get exactly what you paid for, the plex. What you do with it after that is your responsibility.

Paied for GTC... got GTC. End of story, if I pay for a hammer, hit a nail and break it I can bring it back... if I choose to trade it for a nail gun... I can't go back to the store with the nail gun and say it don't work.
The GTC worked, it was traded for 2 plex's... boom CCP is done. If the GTC vanished... and no plex's where had or time added (via use of GTC not plex trade). Ya ccp is on the hook as the GTC would be broken.

CCP gives free play time to players all the time for the player's game play sucess. If sometimes some game time gets destroyed because of game play failure it is hardly like they're taking more time than they are giving based on players game play actions.
How? Every time a player buys plex from another player with isk and then plays the game for "free" CCP give out free game time. The Idea that players can only buy isk with real money buy getting other players to give them the ISK is just a marketing ploy. CCP has every right to sell game currency directly to players just as you can in club penguin or puzzle pirates. That CCP instead allows other players to earn free game time with their play as part of that transaction is just a game play decission they made.
Symetry:
you can use game play to buy free game time. you can lose game time by mistakes in game play.

There are 3 ways to play Eve, which one does not fit:
I buy a GTC, it is secure, I pay, someone plays.
I pay them directly, credit card, debit card etc. I pay, someone plays.
I buy a GTC convert into a PLEX, their rules now allow them to be looted/destroyed. I pay someone does NOT play.
Is this what you want? If it has a SAVE button...I'm not interested. |

You're still not answering the question of "where EXACTLY in this chain did CCP do something shady?"
They sold the PLEX in good faith. What happens to it after that is NOT their responsibility of fault.
If there was a mechanic they introduced where you HAD to move the PLEX (and thereby risk it) you might have a case, but no one - repeat - NO ONE - has to lose a PLEX, so you're making an issue where there isn't one.
You can't regulate stupid.
Quote: Let me put it in a way so that those who are of the opinion that PLEXs are not a special case and should be lootable if you make a mistake.
At what point do you draw the line? What if tomorrow CCP institues a policy saying that if you drive a capial ship and you get blown up in it, then they will dock you 15 days of game time?
Would that be ok, seeing as it's your own misktake for getting blown up and it's costing you real game time, which tranlates into real money leaving your wallet and therefore CCP does not have to honor game time for 15 days of play?
Is it really so hard to put the original rules back into place to protect you from loosing your money like that?
This is just all hyperbolic, histrionic nonsense.
Again, as you seem to be missing the point - CCP absolutely DID live up to their end of the bargain. Someone paid them for PLEX's, they delivered the PLEX's.
How did they do anything wrong? .

They went wrong when they wrote in the game mechanics that directly allow someone to loose something of direct monetary value. PERIOD, end of story. Nothing else in Eve, or any other MMo that I am aware of does that.
My GTC does not get destroyed and my credit card does not blow up.
