Ok, so i use a rifter and a thrasher to pvp with.. i recently bought a firetail as well (had to save up quite a bit), but i never seem to do enough damage compared to other people in rifters and whatnot... they are doing 100-150 thru 50-60+ resists on my rifter/firetail, while i am stuck doing 20-60 damage with my frigs.. why is that? i use fleet emp's and barrage s
my skills are as follows: gunnery 4 motion prediction 3 rapid fire 3 small ac spec. 3 small proj. turret 5 surgical strike 2 trajectory 2 minmatar frig 4
i understand that i will be doing more with maxed skills, but my firetail has a higher base damage using 2x 200mm ac's compared to my rifter using 3x 150mm ac's... the difference is negligible tho..
What do i do to increase my damage lol..

Your fitting is missing. Without it, we can't help you for sure.
Also take in account the distance of you and your target, the transvercial velocity of your target as well. Those 2 things are seriously important.
And tell us a bit more of why your doing less damage. explain the situation a bit ? (ie: story ?)

Get your gunnery skills to four at as soon as possible. Rapid Fire to IV alone lets you deal 4% more damage alone, which is totaly worth the day or so of training. Furthermore train Minmatar Frigate to 5, it is worth the time. Train any ship skill that you're using for more than a few weeks to five.

that is a given, and i am currently doing that.. but 4% more damage to a base of 60 wont help me at all..

Your transvercial velocity might be a bit too high at your skill level to orbit at 500m. Try to orbit a bit higher so your gun's can actually track your target a bit better. Perhaps thats the problem.
I would say 2k but it seriously depends what your enemy has. so look at his ship and adapt your range to it.

i'll try a larger orbit then, perhaps that will help.. but my thrasher, which is fitted with 7x 200mm ac II's with barrage S and orbits at 8km only does about 100-150 damage per volley, compared to the 150 for 3x 150mm ac II's targ speed is about .48

What you do is obviously your call but I really don't think you want a Firetail. The difference between faction frigates and normal ones isn't always sizable enough to justify their cost. Since you had to save up for a Firetail, you are much, much better off flying a Rifter. Even PVP masters with high-skilled characters often use T1 frigates and it's not a question of the skill making it work. The Rifter is the nastiest T1 frigate. I just don't think the Firetail, or the Worm, or the Hookbill, or even the Dramiel is worth the price. They're toys for people who are high-skilled and "fuuuuu youuuuu" rich.
Hit me up in game and let's roam.

hey janya :D yea the firetail is my toy, i enjoy flying with it, and i wont fight with it unless i'm 100% certain that i will have a kill otherwise i stick with my rifter or thrasher... i've killed a few veterans with my thrasher fit, and it is very solid, still need to know how to increase damage lol

I cant believe no one thought at this among u pvp gurus. SHIELD TANK THE FIRETAIL!!! Put a gyrostab, nanofiber and an overdrive in the lows, polycarb rigs and there u go. I put medium shield extender on mine and its deadly. U can even use the lows for damage mods only, 2 gyros and 1 tracking enhancer, or for full nano with 2 overdrives and 1 nanofiber.

This is also something that has been bugging me for a while whilst eft warrioring.
What are the skills which push up dps (for minmatar frigs)?
I remember a while ago finding a thread which detailed all the skilsl for pvp and why they should be trained. The list included fitting skills, dps skills, ewar etc etc.
Anyone out there able to point me to that thread?

Your Rifter fit looks fine, I don't believe you are only getting 60 dps, have you put it into EFT?
But train rapid fire and surgical strike some more anyway.

Edited by: Lady Ayeipsia on 17/08/2010 18:42:33 OK, why a small armor rep on the rifter? From what I have been told and seen, it's just not worth it. You'd be better off with either a Gyrowhatever that increases damage, or Adaptive Nano Plating for most, if not all, engagements. Also, dropping that may let you pull out the cap rig, which leads me to my next point...
You may want to re-think your rigging. Those are nice, defensive rigs, but well... it's a trade off... more resist or switch to projectile rigs to go for more damage.

i would have to agree here. I'm just going to ask the obvious for safeties sake. Are your guns grouped? And if they aren't are you talking single weapon hits or are you adding all three together.

Barrage will **** up your tracking, only use it if you intend to kite.
And well the other part of your problem is the emp ammo. While nice against shields it sucks against armor. If you are mostly fighting other rifters you can usually assume that 80% (completely made up number based on past experience) are armor tanked (meaning 200mm plate and dc2 + maybe a SAR). So therefore you should use fleet fusion.
However still carry some emp with you for the ships where it is safe to assume a shield tank.

for the people that dont believe in my 60 damage, lets have a friendly fight, to stucture, rather not loose my ship.. i have started using fleet fusion, and my dps does bump up a bit, but they are still doing some high damage against my armor...

so i stuck all my skills in eft, ship fitting as well.. says my dps is 82, and volley 249 for my firetail so lets say that the guy im fighting has 50% resists like i do... volley should be doing 110-130.. not less right? but when i fight my friend in his shield tanked merlin im only getting a volley of 45-70

Many people have been trying to do useful things with them for ages, and it's pretty much impossible. Sell it, by 20 Rifters and enjoy yourself in a better ship. Welcome to eve. More expensive isn't always better.

You got two options.
One is the Medium Shield Extender fit the rifter, by dropping the web and plate. In the lows you want 2 Gyros, and a Micro Aux Power Core. You will have more DPS, a slightly higer passive tank. Around 4k EHP :)
And then you can always Laser Fit it. PULSE RIFTER AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

EFT damage means: Both ships stand still at optimal range. You are moving, you bud is moving - speed is a nice tank, too. Fly the Rifter with no tank at all - three guns and salvager (for getting some iskies) in the highs, mwd and scram and web in the mids and two gyrostabs and a nano or something else in the lows. That will give you a very cheap, but effective ship to start with. Learn about tracking etc - there's a tracking guide anywhere in the beginners manual.

Can you use overheating?
If not that's also possible to cause the huge dps difference you see. If you don't have it train thermodynamics ASAP.
Another thing you might look into are hardwirings. I recommend getting a 5% or at least 3% damage hardwiring for small projectiles. And if you can afford another 40 mil or so get the 3% damage and tracking hardwirings for all turrets. It's a small benefit but every bit counts.
These should go into implant slots 6,7 and 9 if I'm not mistaken. Look at the market if you find something useful for slots 8 and 10 as well. Even if you're dirt poor there is really no reason to not get at least some cheapo +1% whatever hardwirings.
Also the only rigs that should go on your rifter are: 1 burst aerator + 1 collison accelerator OR 1 burst aerator + 2 ambits (if you want to load barrage and kite them properly)
Edit: On incoming damage... I hope you're not making the same noob mistake I made: the damage control is an active module that needs clicking ...
Edit2: Also worthy of note: if your skills are still low it's quite easy to impair your own tracking by going to fast flying a rifter.

As has been mentioned, overheating and faction ammo does wonders for dps. You also use very defensive fits, so that might also be a cause. I would consider going for damage rigs, as they fit easily and are very cost effective.
Then there's how you act in combat. What distance are you keeping your target at? are you under ewar like tracking disruptors? are you using the right ammo? emp vs. an armor tank isn't very smart.
If you want to do max damage to your target, a close orbit (500m) is usually good. The only reason you want to go further out is to negate damage.

Yes, movement influences small ship damage a lot.
I often get comments how I can push so much DPS out of my inty. Besides the obvious things (skills and overheating) controlling range and transversal speed is key. A small change in flying style and my drops from 180 to 50d or so. ____

It depends on what your opponent is flying, and how your opponent is flying. There is no straight uninvolved answer to this question.
However, there are general rules of thumb:
1. If your opponent has better tracking than you do, you want to minimize transversal 2. If you benefit from a drawn out fight (because you can repair but your opponent not, or because you have help coming in), then it is better to maximize transversal.
If both points the reverse is true as well. If you have better tracking, you want to maximize transversal, etc.
If your opponent tries to achieve a close orbit (non-manual) and you do to, and you both have afterburners, then transveral is usually much too high for decent shots.
You minimize transversal by either following your opponent in a straight line, or have your opponent follow you in a straight line.
You maximize transveral by trying to moving as fast as possible at a 90 degree angles to your opponent.
The automatic orbit command has two distinct disadvantages:
1. It tries to achieve the right orbit range first, which means that a sudden change in orbit range will cause your ship to directly fly to the hostile (if the hostile is beyond your set orbit distance) or directly away from the hostile (if the hostile is closer than the set orbit range. This is bad if you want to maximize transversal
2. And sudden change in orbit range or speed will cause your ship to re-establish orbit, which often results in ship making a full stop and then start orbiting in the other direction. This is an oddity that can get you killed fast if you rely on keeping transversal high. ____
