I am sincerely impressed with the level of knowledge exibited in this channel.
One thing I have learned through reading is that each ship type has within a class has an even more well defined niche, for example that in the inty class one type is a "dog fighter" the other is generally a "fleet tackler" or that the Zealot is considered a "sniping HAC"
I would like to see these descriptions stickied for all of us newbie pvpers to read and be able to make even more informed decisions with regard to training and choice of ships. Possibly there is another resource that has this list?
Thank you to all the guys who decide to share their knowledge with us in this channel. Kno

Well... it is true that each ship usually has a "role" that is excels in... but it does not define the ship per se.
Take the Megathron for example. It has a bonus for both damage output and for turret tracking. What role would it be good in? Depends on how you fit it. If you fit it with Neutron Blasters, a Web, and a MWD then it can be a deadly blasterboat. On the other hand, if you fit it with 425mm Railguns, Sensor Boosters, and Tracking Enhancers then it can be a very accurate sniper boat.
The Arbitrator is another good example. It has a bonus for drone damage and for tracking disruptor effectiveness. Depending on how you fit it, it can be a very well tanked drone boat (on par with the Vexor), an Ewar boat, or some variation inbetween. _______________________

Shah hit the nail on the head. It's not that ships are limited to certain roles, but that each ship has its unique nuances that make it better for certain roles. Of course it goes to both ends of the spectrum, some ships really only can serve one purpose, while others can be fitted a variety of uses.

There's also the problem of reaching a consensus of ship purpose in the community and that the general player opinion may disagree with CCPs intended role for some ships. As an example, I wouldn't think any description of the Deimos would be justified without stressing that the ship is pretty massively lackluster, even though this is not CCPs intent.

For new players, simplifications are helpful, even if they are not accurate.
If you don't have a clue about interceptors, and want to tackle, a choice between a tackle inty and a dogfighter inty is easy, even though you can tackle in a dogfighter and dogfight in a tackler.
However, using such a guide to make informed decision what you want to train.... I don't know about that. ____

use a little common sense and look at the bonuses for the ship, it's slot layout and it's basic stats. 99% of the time this will allow you figure out what role/roles it can fill. if you can't be asked to do this, or such a simple task is beyond you, go away.

Not to mention that a variety of ship roles/standard fits can sometimes massively change between patches. There was no such thing as solo ham Drakes, Falcons that died commonly, rigged Rifters, op Dramiels, sentry/heavy drone rattlesnakes, sentry Ishtars, and Gilas that didn't suck, and single target doomsdays (among other things) when I first started playing this game. All of these have at least moderately, and in some cases greatly, affected a variety of ship roles and fittings.

Thank You for all of the responses, I can see your points regarding it being difficult to nail down each niche as it is subjective.
Well, I will continue to read on and sift through the collected wisdom in this channel. Considering that only 9% of Eve players seem to have scored a kill recently (not sure I believe that stat.), I for one appreciate any insight into the art of the kill that you guys can provide.

Another great way to get a guide as to what the 'intended' role of a particular class is through Certificates.
I think this was actually the whole reason behind certificates, but people just swept them aside thinking of them as 'just another pointless piece of paper'.
Although they are really quite pointless they can give you an indication of what a ship excels at.
For example. I'm not a Zealot pilot and I was wondering what guns would a Zealot pilot fit. So I 'Show Info' the Zealot and look at the recommended Certificates for the Zealot and it shows, that Medium Pulse Lasers are Recommended. One would then assumes that most pilots would fit Medium Pulse Lasers for most roles.
A Zealot is a good example in this because as you may notice, it also has Armor Tanking also as a recommended Certificate, but the fact is that almost all PvP Zealots shield tank, contradicting and possibly confusing.
But really Certificates are only used to give a guide, a lot of other things also give a guide, (ship bonuses, slot layout).
But anything is possible in EVE, and not always to the desire of CCP.
Eg. Autocannon Thorax, Shield Tanked Brutix, Shield Tanked Dominix.
Fake Edit: I just realised all of these are gallente, are you trying to tell us something CCP? _______________________________
