Galaga for the win!
Nothing better than shooting the enemy to get back your stolen space ship so you can conjoin with it.

I'ld have to say a modded version of Homeworld2 called HW2:Point Defense System.
Stunning eye-candy, complex ship design, strategic and tatical gameplay with inspiring graphics.

Originally by: Scroto Baggins Homeworld 1. Not 2 though, even though it had better graphics, 2 was too restricting, IMO. I've played through 1 several times. Salvage corvettes rule! :)
Cataclysm is also good, but counts salvaged ships against your unit cap max :( HW1 counted them against your cap, but the cap only applied to your own builds.
I know I mentioned it already, but I wanted to reply to this.
I also played through HW1 several times, the story was just great and the gameplay kicked ass. The first time I played through, I actually had an epic battle at the final level, where I was about to lose, then suddenly reinforcements appear to save the day!
I also went a bit crazy on the salvage corvettes, but the game is so much better once you stop relying on captured units and just use your own built ones. I usually just recycle the captured ships, unless it is a special unlocked ship, like a carrier or missile destroyer. -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |

Eve and Mankind are no "Combat space simulators" they're "Live in space simulators".
In Combat space simulators you start in a spacecraft with guns, shields and missiles, fly 2 minutes and get hostiles and action. In Eve there's much more to it, it's an entire world, thus always > Combat space simulators.

"Ok so in everyones opinion what is the best 'Combat Space Simulator' of all time ?? For at the time it came out."
I-War 2; excellent ship setup system, and flight/combat model which was a really nice mix of 'real' and 'fun' (very functional HUD didn't hurt, either)
And well, 'tis about only space game where you can really pirate ships and steal their cargo. ;p

For action mine was the Freespace games, great story that was very well presented, great missions, nice controls and the combat was fast and frentic.
For simple size and scope (escpiecally for it's time) the old elite games. While the last 2 were buggy I don't see games like eve being around now if it wasn't for elite.
For simple looks Nexus is stunning to watch and pretty good to play.
I have the body of a supermodel. I just can't remember where I left it... |

Edited by: Karrde CZ on 03/01/2005 15:25:41 Edited by: Karrde CZ on 03/01/2005 15:24:03 Wow, someone who actually heard of Mankind. I love that game. Too bad their support sucks. Mankind is the best space RTS game idea I've seen since Reunion. Anyways, I wouldn't classify Mankind and EvE as space simulations. There are no space flight models.
EvE has no physics - it has hacks to create illusions of physics presence. I mean come on guys, remember back in the days where you could fly through asteroids? You could mine INSIDE the rock... wtf? and how can projectiles fly through asteroids, and hit a 150km target within a few miliseconds after being fired.... .... i don't know were the simulation is here. Market... there is no simulation either. It's just a tool for the users (us). If it was a simulated market, then the NPC would interact as well.
Sorry, I just dont see EvE as a sim. It's barely an RPG.

I-war 2 is the best. The physics and the controls were awesome. It made fighter sized fights close in knife fights, you didn't really fly forward so much, you orbited your enemy almost always facing him, jinking and juking and spinning and spiraling around each other in all 3 dimentions, all the while throwing hot plasma at each other. Man that rocked.

Slithereen, I have noticed a typo in your post. Where you wrote "Prettiest ships" you put "Homeworld, Cataclysm, Homeworld 2" instead of "Nexus: The Jupiter Incident"
Infact, as far as space-croissaints go, the Inquisitor looks better than the Dreadnaught in Cataclysm :p

I-War/I-War 2, both looked fantastic for their time, both had proper physics, nothing like cutting throttle assist and strafing the larger ships firing down their whole length. Have to agree about the I-war 2 HUD, a little while and a good HAT switch and you could just do everything from the joystick. How I wish I could fly my ships in EVE like that.

Originally by: Dirtball Privateer 2 I think is the only space game I really enjoyed. Also that Fragile Allegience game, but that was an RTS.
Privateer 2 most definatly. Combining space RTS with a little role-playing, best ever. Many other come into mind, but this one is the only one worth mentioning

Apart from that, I've always had a hankering to get hold of a PDP-1 so that I can play SpaceWar.

StarLancer was really good. Freespace 2 was good, but i hated that my wingmates were blown up in seconds and that the starfighter squadrens werent as big as they were in Tie Fighter. Tie Fighter.
someone said something earlyer about Nexus the Jupiter Incident, indeed, it does look alot better than homeworld 2, doesnt lag my comp like homeworld 2 either. very fun game.
