Ok so in everyones opinion what is the best 'Combat Space Simulator' of all time ?? For at the time it came out.
Now for me its gotta be the 'Wing Commander' series...
Or possibly some dodgy assed game thing on I think a Spectrum or atari or somethin... cnt quite remember it entirely (was young at the time ) .. Elite .. or something like that.
Whats everyone elses opinion ?
And as an added note. at some point will LucasArts please allow 'SOMEONE ELSE' to make them a Star Wars space combat sim as the ones they make are Proper**** generally.... Cept mebbe Star Wars X-Wing Alliance,,, Not a bad game ! Typherin LaiDai Care Negotitations Expert level 5

It's tied between Elite and Tie Fighter for me.
Wing Commander was very good though, remember begging my parents to upgrade to an IBM PS/2 386SX 20mhz so I could play it. :)

T-fighter
1st game I had on a base box with the test sound of the ship doing a flyby, ears hurt neighbors complained and mom kicked my head in, but it was well worth hearing the lasers fire with deep base

Difficult to chose one. My favourites are Tie-Fighter, X-Wing Alliance, Freespace 2 and Wing Commander 3 and 4. If I *have* to choose, I think I would pick Wing Commander 4.

There is only one option: Wing Commander. Before wing commander, it was a dark age of crap and as wing commander games progressed, they got better. As an addict of space flight sims, i've played just about all of them (including the one with voice acting by bruce Cambell) and there is no debate in my mind, Freespace is less than X-Wing, X-wing is less than Privateer, and old aaron roberts must bow to his broth, Wing Commander, the greatest flight sim ever.
I am Jack's broken moral compass. I am Jack's STILL trapped in eve limbo. maybe not for much longer... |

I-War and I-War 2 gotta love those physics and the games where hard i mean really hard of course after that comes Tie Fighter, Freespace 1&2, X-Wing Alliance was good. Also gotta love the wing commander series it was uber that they could make games like heart of the tiger in 1994 and price of freedom in 1995 it was 3models then not sprites anymore. Also i love Ive Found Her Babylon5 freeware game. Its uber gotta love to fly a starfury and blast stuff away.

Space Flight physics, trade system, 1st person space fighters, lots of items, lots of PvEs and carebears, lots of guns and missiles. What you'd want more? You even had parrots!
Ah yes also I consider it one of the most player skill-intensive games ever made.

since we're talking about space simulators, David Braben's Elite series is by far the best.

I think Frontier iz teh best. Little buggy, but when you get used to them it's just smooth game.
Real, open space. Real flight model. Every planet accessible etc.. That game was just awesome space simulator.. Many other are just arcade gamez.

Homeworld 1. Not 2 though, even though it had better graphics, 2 was too restricting, IMO. I've played through 1 several times. Salvage corvettes rule! :)
Cataclysm is also good, but counts salvaged ships against your unit cap max :( HW1 counted them against your cap, but the cap only applied to your own builds.

Yeah, the term "space sim" is probably used too loosely. Flightsim fans get mad when you call games flightsims that don't use real physics or realistic planes.
But if we were to apply such a restrictive definition to space sims, then there wouldn't be many.
Some other good space sims:
Orbiter - About as realistic as a space sim can get. Definitely not for the faint of heart tho. One of the few space games that actually doesn't ignore the laws of physics.
TREK for MS-DOS - I used to have a lot of fun playing this, but popped it in recently and for some reason it just wasn't as amazing as i remember.
Gradius - Much better than Life Force, IMO. Every time I see a picture of the Easter Island stone heads, I always think they're gonna open their mouths and shoot blue circles.

Originally by: Scroto Baggins Yeah, the term "space sim" is probably used too loosely. Flightsim fans get mad when you call games flightsims that don't use real physics or realistic planes.
But if we were to apply such a restrictive definition to space sims, then there wouldn't be many.

Originally by: Scroto Baggins Homeworld 1.
I know I mentioned it already, but I wanted to reply to this.
I also played through HW1 several times, the story was just great and the gameplay kicked ass. The first time I played through, I actually had an epic battle at the final level, where I was about to lose, then suddenly reinforcements appear to save the day!
I also went a bit crazy on the salvage corvettes, but the game is so much better once you stop relying on captured units and just use your own built ones. I usually just recycle the captured ships, unless it is a special unlocked ship, like a carrier or missile destroyer. -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |

Eve and Mankind are no "Combat space simulators" they're "Live in space simulators".
In Combat space simulators you start in a spacecraft with guns, shields and missiles, fly 2 minutes and get hostiles and action. In Eve there's much more to it, it's an entire world, thus always > Combat space simulators.

"Ok so in everyones opinion what is the best 'Combat Space Simulator' of all time ?? For at the time it came out."
I-War 2; excellent ship setup system, and flight/combat model which was a really nice mix of 'real' and 'fun' (very functional HUD didn't hurt, either)
And well, 'tis about only space game where you can really pirate ships and steal their cargo. ;p

For action mine was the Freespace games, great story that was very well presented, great missions, nice controls and the combat was fast and frentic.
For simple size and scope (escpiecally for it's time) the old elite games. While the last 2 were buggy I don't see games like eve being around now if it wasn't for elite.
For simple looks Nexus is stunning to watch and pretty good to play.

Edited by: Karrde CZ on 03/01/2005 15:25:41 Edited by: Karrde CZ on 03/01/2005 15:24:03 Wow, someone who actually heard of Mankind. I love that game. Too bad their support sucks. Mankind is the best space RTS game idea I've seen since Reunion. Anyways, I wouldn't classify Mankind and EvE as space simulations. There are no space flight models.
EvE has no physics - it has hacks to create illusions of physics presence. I mean come on guys, remember back in the days where you could fly through asteroids? You could mine INSIDE the rock... wtf? and how can projectiles fly through asteroids, and hit a 150km target within a few miliseconds after being fired.... .... i don't know were the simulation is here. Market... there is no simulation either. It's just a tool for the users (us). If it was a simulated market, then the NPC would interact as well.
Sorry, I just dont see EvE as a sim. It's barely an RPG.

I-war 2 is the best. The physics and the controls were awesome. It made fighter sized fights close in knife fights, you didn't really fly forward so much, you orbited your enemy almost always facing him, jinking and juking and spinning and spiraling around each other in all 3 dimentions, all the while throwing hot plasma at each other. Man that rocked.

I-War/I-War 2, both looked fantastic for their time, both had proper physics, nothing like cutting throttle assist and strafing the larger ships firing down their whole length. Have to agree about the I-war 2 HUD, a little while and a good HAT switch and you could just do everything from the joystick. How I wish I could fly my ships in EVE like that.

I-War 1 and 2 : Physics, Graphics,British, Storyline and (in Iwar 1) one of the best opening movies I've seen in a Game Starlancer : You could interact with your Ship between missions, and the Dialog changed depending on how well you did Freelancer : Because it's nice to play a space sim that doesn't make me have to clear out my desk to set my Saitek X45 up X2 The Threat : It tries so hard ! Tachyon - The Fringe : Good Storyline, good graphics for its age, choosing a faction and getting different ships EVE Online : Well it's more like a piece of fine art then a space sim, but IMO the best space ship design Freespace 1/2: Graphics, Storyline, CGI and Immersion - They could make a film about the Conflict freespace storyline - and the opening movies are amazing for their time

How the hell can people claim "elite" is the best ever space sim? The game looks like someone drew it in paint for gods sakes. Fair enough, you might have had fun with it when you were 7 years old, and it might have been groundbreaking and original at the time, but since then the same concept has been redone a million times better (graphics with more then 3 colors for example).
