X-wing was pretty sweet, first game I ever bought for my 486 SX 25.
Freespace 2 has to be my all time fav though.

hmm, i liked privateer 2: the darkening, with Clive Owen playing Ser Lev Arris.
Loved that game, and since then, clive owen has been dubbed 'the privateer guy' by me and my brothers, since he was in the game way way before he was launched into fame and fortune.

I have played about all the wing commander games, frontier elite first encounters, i have X2, battlecruiser millenium gold but haven't played either.
My vote goes to elite, hated the buggs that prevented you from loading savegames but the game had that special feeling and enormous freedom.

don't forget the word "simulation"
Nothing has ever come close to the simulation the I-wars gave.

My favs in no order are.
BBC B Elite Freespace 2 Wing Commander 3&4
But as to the best? It's the I-War games for me all the way.
Games where great Story rocked Community is still good even now some 4 or 5 years after the last game. There are people who have modded I-War2 to be basicly Elite in DX8 with Physics and wingmen :D
Check out the forums here if you were a fan
On a side note the I-War community are currently trying to track down the games IPR so they can purchase the source !

No contest. Elite.
For overall impact, quality of gameplay, addictiveness and for being so far ahead of its time. Braben and Bell were geniuses!

Gotta go for Elite... with Wingcommander as a good second. With both games I was totally agape over something like even being possible with computers!
After three or four hours of playing Elite I would be so drenched in sweat that I would not be allowed at the dinner table before taking a shower... good times ------------------------------------------ My bio

I-War 1 and 2 : Physics, Graphics,British, Storyline and (in Iwar 1) one of the best opening movies I've seen in a Game Starlancer : You could interact with your Ship between missions, and the Dialog changed depending on how well you did Freelancer : Because it's nice to play a space sim that doesn't make me have to clear out my desk to set my Saitek X45 up X2 The Threat : It tries so hard ! Tachyon - The Fringe : Good Storyline, good graphics for its age, choosing a faction and getting different ships EVE Online : Well it's more like a piece of fine art then a space sim, but IMO the best space ship design Freespace 1/2: Graphics, Storyline, CGI and Immersion - They could make a film about the Conflict freespace storyline - and the opening movies are amazing for their time

Elite: Where the dreams began, damn those thargoids!
Jumpgate: The best and still the truest online fight combat sim out there.
Homeworld (1 & 2): Online and offline for proving that there is another way.

the ELITE games by far simulate space the most, it was simulated down to a fine scientific art when ELITE frontier and ELITE first encounters were released, 100% playability, 100% realistic, and guess what, you could actually crash into planets in those games

Space Empire IV, turn by turn space empire management, graphically it's a joke but the gameplay and system is Great
hard to start and handle at first but after hey you can spend days/weeks playing one party
try it! http://www.malfador.com/se4.html
they seems to work on a Space Empire IV with better graphics (not hard) http://www.malfador.com/se5/se5main.html

X2 the Threat and FreeLancer for single player games...
Eve and FreeLancer on-line
Star Lancer was a blast, just to run around an blow stuff up...
I-War was just too damm complicated for me...Seemed you have way too much crap to learn, just to have some fun...

How the hell can people claim "elite" is the best ever space sim? The game looks like someone drew it in paint for gods sakes. Fair enough, you might have had fun with it when you were 7 years old, and it might have been groundbreaking and original at the time, but since then the same concept has been redone a million times better (graphics with more then 3 colors for example).
I want to know how people nominating "elite" are thinking, so please enlighten me to why an 20 year old space sim is better then modern space sims like freelancer. ______________________

This a vote for the best space sim of all time. . . When Elite was released it was revolutionary , name a game that has come out since that has been a 'Omg look at that'. if a new game comes out now we 'Expect' good graphics....
Ok so elite is NEVER going to win a best graphics award ... But as you have stated, it paved the way for a whole generation of space sims.
So it gets my vote. ohhh and Wingcommander pwnd Typherin LaiDai Care Negotitations Expert level 5

Well, yes thats true but, being revolutionary isnt an criteria for being the best ever space sim in my opinion. It simply has to be entertaining wich elite isnt. ______________________
