Anyone know if they are contemplating a Free-to-Play option for this game like several of the other big name MMO's recently? If so, any word on restrictions? I would think something like Tech 1 equipment and skills only, or something along those lines...

Not until they're well onto the downward slope, like those other games are/were before going freeà ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

This already exists, it's called cycling trial accounts. And the limitation is you only get 14 days of skills etc.

We have the perfect system already, its completely balanced - I haved paid for years. Any other implimentation would ruin the game. |

PLEXes aren't F2P, though, since the account is still being paid for. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

I don't see how F2P can even work in EVE because F2P must be subsidized somehow and that always ends up being through micro-transactions. Which I do not believe can even work in EVE. What would we buy?
PLEX fill the needed gap anyway. Plenty of people play EVE 'free' by making enough ISKies to buy PLEX.

F2P only really involves the person playing the game. So yes buying plex with isk to extend your account is F2P as the person extending its account with plex didn't give ccp any money. The lazy **** who bought the plex and put in on the market gave ccp the money.

F2P wouldnt work in EvE because all sub accounts would default to F2P and we would return to shadow training those long skills we hate. Unless they figured out a way to lock them out and pull bonuses from sub account skills so you could only fly trial ships and train skills according to, while in F2P mode anyway.
Besides, EvE doesnt need more people playing it. Not in its current architecture. |

It may be free for you, but it's not free in the F2P sense. F2P means you can play without anyone paying for your account, usually because the company hopes you'll cough up some cash to pay for higher levels/better equipment/funnier dungeons/whatever. However, you can choose not to and just mill around and do sfa. It is really, actually, entirely free.
This is not the case with EVE and certainly not with PLEX ù unless your account is paid for (which makes it not "free"), you can't even log in, so it's not F2P. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

There's several people in my corp that have never paid to play eve. That's what free to play means. Just because theres no item mall doesn't mean its not f2p. Just because someone else pays for it doesn't mean its not f2p. On "normal" f2p games the advertiser picks up the tab. In eve players do. Its still free to play.

Edited by: Arkanor on 28/08/2010 20:22:37 Eve is F2P, don't believe me? consider this:
If you PLEX your account you pay no real world money. Sure it requires a little grind, but so does every F2P game if you play free.
People who buy plex and sell them are effectively buying Eve's equivalent of "Premium Items", IE: ISK.
In an F2P game, someone inevitably pays for your account, although not as directly as in EVE. EVE also probably has the fairest implementation of F2P, as everything you can get for cash you can get from playing the game instead of having "cash shop only items". Ads don't pay for F2P, don't delude yourself.

If you've been around for more than a year or two and cannot put aside mere 600 mil ISK every second month for GTC then you're doing *something* wrong.
Or you don't know when to stop with pew-pew
