1. Even I don't notice this very often, although I found it. However, it is there 24/7, in everyone's face that cares to look for it.
2. Concerning your ship as it floats in space or station, imagine someone holding up a picture of the Mona Lisa and waving it around in front of your face and telling you that's 3D.
3. One can't really detect this if one is moving... one must be absolutely still.
4. What really makes me mad is that CCP brags about how great all their improvements to missiles and ships and rebalancing and everything else are, but when it comes to the simple 3D graphic of my ship floating in space or station, they give me nothing more than a static image, wiggle it in front of my face and say, "3D, by design !!"
5. As far as I know, they are not going to fix it, and I know for a fact that it used to be realistic.
Now, it's a JOKE. A JOKE on anyone with half a brain and two good eyes.

@Floppie It's simple really, Floppie. Imagine looking at two trees, one close, the other far away but directly behind the first one. If you move your head a tiny bit, the image of the far away tree shifts in relation to the closer tree. Eve doesn't do that any more. They dumbed it down. It's like a painting of two trees... you move your head, but what you see is the same. In Eve's case, the camera is "floating", not your head, but the result is the same. Does this help? @Dusenman I understand how you might want something a little more concrete to help visualize what I'm saying, but I would have to make a video or show you in person. Really, I think I gave an excellent example. Sometime when your ship is just sitting still, look at the way the picture on your screen slowy wobbles around. In real life, if it did that you would see things behind your ship as the camera wobbled. It used to work properly, but they broke it and now they claim it is "by design". No clue what you are referring to. Last check I was still getting different views of the objects in a scene when the camera was rotated and the perspectives of the objects present were shifting properly. |

@Tyberius .... well I think you've got it, yes... you know how when you look at the screen, the ship and the background slowly move together? Is that the static skybox you mean? When they put in captain's quarters, that is when they broke it. Before that, the ship floated, not the background.
I don't really care if they ever fix it, i.e. it's their MMO and I am over it, I'm just trying to find another living soul that recognizes the problem and actually agrees that it stinks, and if I'm lucky maybe even remembers how it used to be, LOL. Its called the Parallax effect.
If your drone camera moves 200meters and the object you're looking at is 30 km away like a ship or 3000 km away like a planet then you wont see a damn thing. What you see on the screen in Eve is absolutely correct.
If you want I can explain it in American units too.

It seems like what is being discussed isn't something that a lot of people notice as being wrong. If it were a big issue, I am sure most people in this thread would immediately understand what the OP is talking about.
All in all, it is possible that there are bigger issues that need to be addressed. |

@ThisIsntMyMain - Ah, thank you for that... parallax. I did a little checking and found this, which describes (and has a little video loop too) what I'm talking about. Perhaps at the distance of 30km to the ship what you are saying is credible, but I am not referring to anywhere near that far. I'm talking about the distance from the camera to a battleship in a station, or fairly close to the ship in space. In those circumstances, I think the parallax video might just convince someone that the eve drone camera movement with ship and background moving exactly together may be questionable. I think what he's trying to say is that when the camera wobbles, you don't see the orientation of objects in the distance change.
If you're standing in front of a large cube that's got one of its corners closest to you, you should see both sides of the cube yes? Move your head to the left and you'll see more of the left side and less of the right; and vice versa.
I believe he's saying that he doesn't like it because that doesn't happen in eve.
I've only been around since 2003 in one form or another, but I can't remember that ever happening. Unless he's referring to the NVidia 3D vision thing which eve used to support ? |

@Sko Hmm, I am uncertain, but I don't believe it was the Nvidia 3d vision. Although I have Nvidia based graphics cards, I never really used the 3d vision software part. I think you needed special glasses or something, is that right? I really wish you could remember how it used to be before they replaced the spinning in stations with captains quarters. Back then there was parallax, or no, perhaps it was just that the station background didn't move, the ship floated, and as it floated you could see different parts of the background behind it.. I remember it like it was yesterday. Oh well, maybe someone will remember... until then... I feel like I'm in an episode of the twilight zone. Are you referring to the Depth of Field effect? Where it changes what appears to be the focus of the image?
Just trying to get an understanding of which "3d" you are referring to.
edit: also, what your seeing may be the side effect of the game not having full V3 stuff yet. Perhaps there is a visual blend issue with the old shaders and effects and the new ones. If this is the case, we just have to wait for them to finish the updated stuff. |

@Corinia ...not referring to depth of field. just when your ship is close to you and completely still, the drone camera moves, and their is no parallax effect with stationary objects in the background. Also, not sure about the full V3 thing you mention. I plead ignorance of that. Your mention of shaders makes me think it is probably not the issue. If you use a ship with spiky projections, like a Nightmare, you can pinpoint and spot this more easily: "using one of the sharp points of the ship and an exact spot on the station background, observed the changes between the two". I logged in just to confirm, and this is definitely the case (however minor the issue might be). Now I can't unsee it...
For those who don't understand: Hold your finger up in front of your face. See what objects it points to in your room. Now move your head a little without moving your finger (or your room, duh). Watch as your finger points to different objects in the background as you move your head.
Now log in to EVE, switch to ship spinning mode in a station, and watch closely what is behind your ship. Let the camera float around on its own (without rotating it manually). You will notice that your ship is exactly in the same position against the background, even when the camera moves.
After a while of staring at it the hangar looks like someone took a screenshot and is wobbling it in front of your monitor, not as if the camera is floating around in a 3D space. |

@Mara Rinn - I tested this with camera shake on and with it off. I didn't see any changes, however. The test was only done in station. Anyway, it's always been my impression that camera shake is only in play during certain parts of warp and when your ship is hit.
As far as the camera turning, I think I recall someone trying to sell me that argument many months ago...but even if that is what is happening, the lens of the camera is describing an arc, and that arc has distance, and that distance is enough motion to generate parallax (see Abdiel's excellent explanation above). So although you've perceived one of the possible finer points, I can't agree that it is the reason we see no 3D.
As I was testing this out for you, I realized that on my older computer, with an old 6800 ultra video card, and using a decidedly unpointy ship, Noctis, I found it pretty difficult to confirm the problem without a little concentration. That could easily be an issue when people read this and try to see it on their own systems. If it takes more than 5 seconds, well, some guys are going to move on to the next thing...
Anyway, thank you for the ideas.
