Ok, so not sure if this belongs here, or Out Of Pod...but it is kinda EvE related.
I was just musing over how I'd rate various places in the world according to security status.
You know, like... Somalia would be nullsec, as would South Africa (94% chance of getting away with murder). Certain suburbs of the US (LA) would be lowsec. Places like Australia and much of western/northern Europe might be Highsec, with places like China and the Arab states being Highsec too with severe consequences for crime. Much of Africa would be lowsec/nullsec.
How would you rate your suburb/city/country?

Somalia is definatly low sec, there are pirates
Null Sec would be Iraq, Afganistan and... all the wars we don't care about anymore or did not in the first place.

A nerdy thread, but I join in. Middlesbrough, North-East England. I rate it with a 0.6. You do not get mugged at every corner, only when you are really unlucky. Some kids wear masks on their way to school, babies pop up dead on the river, and some only steal dirty toilet brushes. All in all are the people here not too bright, but it has a negative potential. It does not miss a lot to be low-sec. A mass riot could turn it into 0.0 for months. --

Edited by: Samican Nutikor on 29/08/2010 18:43:21 I don't know if there is any "0.0" out of the pod...it's usually more like carebear priates in EVE...people only try stuff if they know they are at the better end (that's 5x advantage at least), otherwise they cover in fear and see themselves as poor defenseless victims.
I've never ever been bothered, even walking home pretty drunk at 3am and facing a mob of wannabe aggressive teens. They opened the way like some personal guard =p.
So no. Out of the pod you will only find "vanilla-PvP" with "vanilla-pirates". Be it teenies, wannabe-neos, thieves or whatever - they won't do jack unless they are at least armed and 5x more than you / your group. And 'ere you say anything - the only time some neos actually tried something was when they were 8 vs 1. "Tough guys" like the "tough guys" in EVE.
"Aggressive / tough people" just like "vanilla-PvP" it seems. The chance of ending in a dust bin scares most.
[EDIT says]:
Riots don't count as they are out of the ordinary, so to say. A riot would be more like a "0.0 event" or so. Real life just turns around using and abusing people because you know you can, and that without having to fear any repercussions.

ALL real life is 0.0.
Look, the distinguishing factor in system security status is CONCORD response. If you commit a crime in high sec, CONCORD immediately knows about it and comes down on your ass. If you commit a crime in low sec, CONCORD immediately knows about it and automatically applies certain lesser penalties. In 0.0, there is no such thing as an automatic penalty: you do what you want, and IF the local alliance finds out about it, and IF they decide it's a crime, and IF they're able to catch you, they'll punish you for it.
Is there anywhere in real life where, if I commit a crime, it's instantly known beyond a shadow of a doubt that I committed it? No. Everywhere in real life is 0.0; the only difference is whether it's a NAPfest that takes NRDS very seriously (ie, the United States), a war zone between sov holders and various criminal organizations (ie, Mexico), an area with no controlling authority where you have to rely on your own local gang to protect you (ie, Somalia), or just thousands of miles of emptiness where no authority holds and people can disappear without a trace (ie, the open sea).

I'm reasonably sure that if you walked into a police station and punched a cop in the face, you'd be on the recieving end of some taser-flavoured punishment pretty sharpish...
