Well its time people. The Big One. The One we've all been waiting for.
at 2100 hours BST or 2000 Eve Time the opening ceremony for the Summer Olympics will begin and we will try and showcase British civilisation as best we ca... oh god we are so ******.
A friend of mine from Singapore showed me the opening ceremony of Beijing 2008 with a very wide grin on his face as I tried to figure out how we could best it. We are also looking at potential thunderstorms over the Capital and a temperature of 23 degrees.
This started on July 6th of 2005. For reference the day before Cold War was launched letting us filthy carebears get our grubbly little mits on Freighters ... and the rest of you on Dreadnaughts....
Anyone else going to be watching this? Drinking game of a shot every time a team carrying their national flag around the stadium looks embarresed to be seen wearing the bloody thing

What was up with all of the crazy displays when running the torch? Have we been ******* that up for very long? Rocketmen, helicopter rappelling, marriage proposals. What ever happened to just running the torch? Have we become that obsessed with 1 up'ing each other? |

If I drank Alchohol I'd be inclined to come hunt you down Kirjava and drag you to the nearest watering hole and get ourselfs trousered so we could laugh at the rest of the goddamn nation. Even if it does result in us contributing to which we are laughing/crying/moaning/whinging about.
Instead I'm gonna drink my Pepsi, post on the internet and probably play some Eve Forums. Resident Haruhiist since December 2008.
Laying claim to Out of Pod Experience since 2007, plain and simple. Keep the trash out of Out Of Pod Experience, If it's EVE Related or deserves a Lock, it does not belong here. |

I am now one very proud Brit. While not perhaps equalling the shear scale of what China had every right to celebrate as a Civilisation I think that we did it in a way befitting our great Nation. While cheesy to go for the NHS celebration I think it was worthy to defend it in the face of those who would try and destroy one of our greatest achievements.
As a Civil Engineer the reference to Brunel was not missed, but was received with the respect it damn bloody well deserves in the fabric of our nation.
Good luck to all those involved... and I think that we have a carte blanche to forgo our lack of patriotism in certain circles.
All together now!
ALL HAIL BRITTANIA!!
PS - Australia and USA ; watching you

I went and watched Batman......... gooooooooooooood, stuff the reviewers, and zimmermans score... oh the score...... i know he does it on autopilot seemingly nowadays but.......
Anyway. Been home and catching a few brews after an all too sober start to my holiday. Decided to catch up the olympic ceremony - had it in my head it would be full of pompous ballet, strange modern dance, copious use of HUGE ribbony material and completely irrelevant to both Britain as a whole and BORING.
Im wrong - VERY wrong.
What a great show, im busy catching more and more but nothing ive seen yet disappoints as we both prejudged.
Well Done Organisers.
Relevant, Nostalgic, Contemporary and FUNNY. Im not sure ive ever seen funny injected into one before. "caught on fire a little bit, just a little." "Delinquents, check, weirdos, check, hippies, check, pillheads, check, freaks, check, potheads, check .....gangsn++ all here!" |

This is what I thought. But then I watched it - and was thrilled!
Wow! Cool Britannia indeed. I thought they captured Britishness very well. |

I thought it was going to be a horrific screw up but it was actually quite good and uniquely British. Chinas looked pretty shallow in comparison. But then they're led by a government which is all about keeping up appearance. |

I was really impressed and yeah I agree, China's was designed to be huge, boastful and domineering. I thought the British one was much more inclusive. Wasn't a massive "Whaaaa look how awesome, important and impressive we are," more of a "This is us and you know what, we're cool with it."
Would have been perfect if it hadn't been for the bajillion Americans holding up proceedings in the athletes parade, swanning about dressed like Air France flight attendants . . . Sorry to like 95% of EVE :D |

The Americans are a funny people. Massive uproar over their Olympic Kits not being made in America, then they walk out in the parade of the nations all wearing Berets. |

I'm sorry, but the Opening Ceremony is totally surpassed by the tool who tried to nick an Olympic Torch as it was going through the county I live in - each torchbearer was running with 6 (Met?) Police officers and the whole things was subject to almost constant video coverage.
Well done that guy. |

Who says we're cool with it?
Team GB's uniforms are blue/white (ie Scottish), and the whole event has become so commercialised as to be a total joke, and its clear from the opening few days that our competitors are going to under-perform as usual.
I'm not an Olympics hater (I'm ambivalent about them actually) but why are sports like golf, tennis, BMX and so on included? Remember the original Olympic games was to demonstrate what was essentially military prowess, not the ability to dance, ffs |

In the future, all wars will be fought with a dance-off. |
