Are there any websites or something alike out there that summarizes EVE's political history? Just started playing this game again and I feel so lost when I read the Alliance/Corporation-discussion forum. When I paid the most attention to what was happening (didn't play the game back then, but still followed it since it was so damn interesting) Band Of Brothers had just been disbanded by some backstabbing dude.

I don't know of a concise spot but generally the 0.0 political blocks fall in 4 factions:
1) Northern Coalition occupy most of the north western portions of 0.0 (Guristas regions and a bit of serpentis)
2) Russians occupy the drone regions (North east) and part of angel space (East).
3) IT (Formerly known as Kenzoku, formerly known as BoB) has returned to their holy lands in the south west corner of the map after being rudely kicked out by Goonswarm through treachery (Goonswarm got hit by the karma bat later though)
4) The miscellaneous forces and fragmentary hell hole that is now the south eastern corner of the map. Mostly controlled by Atlas and -A- until recently. All sorts of fun and enjoyment has been going on recently as the Russians along with Pandemic Legion decided to move in.
The past is the past.. generally politics in this game is similar to the real world except things that take decades get compressed into a few weeks or a month. There are some VERY long term animosity and friendships in play which transcend the actual alliances though. 0.0 is never quite what it seems.

You could probably write a book if you go all the way back. Do you have any specific questions? Those would be a lot easier to answer.

There is plenty of 0.0 history on the web. The problem is, is that its in bits and pieces all over the place. Its too bad because a recorded history of 0.0 could be a great recruiting tool.
I joined eve in Jan of 2008 during I believe The Second Great War. I stories I read from that got me to try Eve. Also a couple blogs of the big (at the time) scams. After leaveing the tutorial, I was sent a mail by a corp asking me to join. I did and it turned out they were at war. I got into pvp my first day and was loving it.
After playing for a few weeks, I discovered a blog called The 0.0 Experiment by Innominate Nightmare. That thing was so awesome it cemented by love for Eve.
The glue that held together the game for me during those early, hard days, were the stories I read about the great war and the awesome guys in the corp I joined.

I read this before "lunch", it sounded interesting (I am originally an archaeologist after all =))and it kept naging all throughout the break. What about starting an EVE History Project?
It might be interesting - not only because others, like the OP, might be interested in the history of 0.0 (it's actually what keeps me in-game, and now in a 0.0 alliance) - but also because so much of EVE is player driven. It might be interesting for people, even outside of EVE, to know the history of a (almost) purely player-driven game.
The CCP "lore" or "background" can be found easily enough on the site, and in the future when EVE is no more (horrid thought) or through CCP the company.
But what the players create - given free hands in shaping the "history" and of a game - will be permanently gone, or maybe with luck, can be labourisly pieced together through blogs and whatever is out there - if they are still out there when EVE ends. The EVE History Project would save the player created achievements.
Let comments and flames commence, either here or mail me in game. so there should be a sig here? |

Edited by: Aragoni on 06/09/2010 11:32:52 Chal0ner, I don't think it would be too hard to find out. CCP should have some sort of log or something alike that has most information about what have happened through the days since 0.0 came to EVE. But then again, I could be wrong.
Originally by: Zyck You could probably write a book if you go all the way back. Do you have any specific questions? Those would be a lot easier to answer.
Don't have any specific questions really. Just want to find out what has happened this past few months since all the stuff that is being written about (for example) Atlas is damn confusing.

Aye, possibly. But a technical log (pixel [coordinate] to [coordinate]) wouldn't be to interesting. And there's a cut off date somewhere. Keeping a log of *all* activity in 0.0 since years bag, would be horrendously large (or not, but I think so). A history based on technical raw data isn't useful =( so there should be a sig here? |

I think this is a great idea. A history of 0.0 from the time the first corp tentatively established the very first claim to sov up to the present day would be interesting for a lot of people, and might even be commecially successful if published - it might have wider interest than the Eve community.
I imagine a book with an Eve territorial map every page showing how 0.0 has changed significantly since the last time, with comments underneath on all the drama, backstabbings, feats of bravery etc that took place.
It would need to be as neutral as possible, giving space to all sides. Maybe this is something the Intersteller Corresepondents could do?

There have been few posts like this in the past, if you are interested start digging into eve-search, even google. The only problem is getting an unbiased view of the events. Generally te people reporting on the events will be the participants, and those are the people most likely to be biased. If anyone is thinking about starting such a project, try to get at least one report from the point of view of each side.
That being said, I would very much like reading the real EVE story. I am pretty sure that this is the only MMO where the entire story (OK, ignoring the empire for now, not like they matter) is built by real people. Having it in a similar format to the Chronicles would be an awesome way to attract new players, and would even help people understand the current situation more.
I'd be glad to throw some ISK your way if someone decides to collect all this. ___________ EVE is dying! Now for real! |

Edited by: Lynn Deniera on 06/09/2010 16:39:23 There's a few reliable sources for things like this already in existance. There the eve history wiki, with alot of great articles and histories.
Another source of history (although limited) is the mittani's feature "sins of a solar spymaster." I'm sure there are some useful blogs on this topic.
Then theres the scrapheap and kugu forums. Finding some of the old posters there and simply interviewing them would be a great source, not to mention the conflicts outlined in the threads on those forums. CAOD is useless.
For current events (and soon to be history) there is the recently launched eve news24, which is doing a great job of keeping up to date and unbiased on current events.

Cheers for all the answers. Will start digging into it ASAP And about a large summary of the EVE-history it would probably prove to be too large of an undertaking for one single person. Especially for a person that's studying hard at a university.

This is one of the fist things I asked when I came to the game. The short answer to your question is: no, there no such thing.
CCP missed out on logging EVE's history from the start. A huge mistake if you ask me as they are (or should be) the definition of a neutral observer.
Various players have reported on their highlights of the game. There are countless of sources out there, going from the EVE wiki, this forum and blogs to video's filled with history and/or propaganda. The problem is, as it was said already, that these sources are terribly fragmented. There are bits and pieces everywhere and there is no one place that has a solid report on everything. Not even a basic timeline.
If you care enough you'll find out what you need to know. After all, most of it is still out there, if you know where to look.

Lots of good input I'll see what time I might have to spend on it - as said here already, it's maybe not an endevour for one person while playing the game and having other RL obligations as well.

Is IT actually holding sovereignity somewhere? I usually see them in Reblier and the empire fringes (Syndicate, etc) which are npc-space. I mean, we live there, but it's not owned by the players as such.
Or are they still camping Reblier to mess with Xenuria (lol), and are actually based further out? This is a genuine question, since we seem to be vaguely neighbors in NPC-space and I'm curious.

Yeah, I saw that - very nice one, with lots of info in the thread. So ... I'll try to start something. I'm leaving for east africa in roughly a week, but in the first half of october I'll try to post something here or in a more appropriate forum. Anyone else feeling up to do a bit of EVE history research mail me in-game (we are two with interest but not all that much time at the moment) =) so there should be a sig here? |

I wonder if there any degrees out there that would see historical research in the medium of an MMO as valid material for thesis/publication... It'd almost be an ideal introduction to 'real' historical research: the records are largely available electronically, most of the participants (i.e. players) in the major events are still alive if you can find them and persuade them to talk. Just as in real life, there is no objective, authoritative single source of information, but hundreds or thousands of primary sources each with their own bias and quality of recollection.

Then again, i'd rest assured CCP would sue your ass off if you tried to print and sell that book without their expressed permission.
