I think isk is just too hard to make. Most people work up until 4-5 if not longer. So when they get home..its 6 or 7 depending on things you have to take care of.So you settle down and get ready to play around 8..more or less. That leaves you around 3 or 4 hours of game time.
That said..allot of people don't want to fly frigs around.I like battleships for example because they allow a variety of fittings, look better and can do higher level things.
Even a fully t2 fit megathron will cost you around 200 million.See where I'm getting at?
And as far as low sec goes..it would be much more populated if isk was a little easier to make. You have to find the sweet spot to not over do it and have total chaos because it doesn't cost you much to die.I know that 200 mill is easy to make in low sec..but lets face it and be honest, its not working.Low sec is empty because people don't want to risk losing that much time..along with a few other reasons. You lose a battleship in seconds and need 2 days to replace it.And they keep nerfing missions but expect the care bears to come out and play..yeah right, dream on.They will stop playing.
And this is known by people..that eve is a grind as cool as it may be.But some people just want to jump in a game and have fun.
The most fun to be had in eve is if you are a griefer type player..and eve is full of em.But not everyone wants to deal with these people.Bottom line is that most people don't play a game to get ****ed off..and eve has its way of ****ing people off,one way or another.
I on the other hand find it exiting to survive and advance in such a hostile game..its a challenge to me.but that's my opinion.

If the people who inhabit these forums are truly adults then I hope global warming does indeed wipe out humanity.
I'll tell you one thing for sure, I know anyone under 16 will leave this game within 10 minutes of the first tutorial (How do I use the skill the tutorial just gave me!?).

subscriptions are down because eve online has become too much like a job these days.
also recession related unemployment combined with morgage arrears vs eve online might be a big factor too.
building alliances up is pointless cos they can be too easily disbanded by 1 spy with the right roles.
pi is nothing more than a boring clickfest
mining rewards too little for high risk
missions get so boring after you've done angel extravaganza for 24585th time
sov mechanics made it easier for the mega alliances to control 0.0
too many supercarriers made low sec gate camping too easy for those with supercarriers and too hard for those without.
exploration is not very exciting cos there are no real challenges to find anything of real significance (perhaps finding wormholes to jovian & terran space would add a challenge by searching first new eden for the clues which then must be pieced together to find a way into Jove space and then exploring Jove space for cluse for a lost gate to terran space) SIG: if my message has spelling errors its cos i fail at typing properly :P |

The game has some major flaws which keep most people away from the game
1. The tutorial system is absolutly terrible. It hardly explains anything about the game. This puts new starters off a lot of the time.
2. The UI is god awful for a new player, its OK when you have been using it for a year you get use to it, but before that time it really is bad and needs a complete revamp
3. General amount you can lose in the game of course this is the players own fault but most don't want to be able to lose 6 months worth of working hard.
4. Empire is boring!! most new players don't want to go to low sec or 0.0 because you die, but missions and mining just become a borefest within 1 - 2 montghs.
5. Most new players can't be asked to sit down and work out a way of making good isk or in gebneral sort something out that would give them some passive earning.

To be honest I think the problem is less about people subscribing and more about people failing their free trials.
EVE has a learning curve so bad, I can't actually think of an appropriate word, horrible, terrible, crap, etc just don't cover it. The environment of the game is something people like yourself and i Relish, but a couple of bad experiences in those 14-21 free days is enough to put someone off for life.
You get scammed, loose all your stuff because you transported it all in your ship at the same time, some guy uses a jet-can trick to let them blow you up etc. Everyone on here knows that the slightest mistake, mis-read of a contract/market order can loose you millions or billions of ISK in a second.
When your trying out a new game, with little time invested and something like that occurs, its enough to make you turn it off and never go back.
Additionally, to combat the terrimegawfulbad learning curve, CCP in their infinite wisdom thought the best solution was to add a wall of text to every single interface, yes, thats exactly what a new guy playing wants to when they are trying out their new spaceship game, they want to stop and read a wall of text every 2 minutes.
If CCP want more trials to actually stay beyond those first 72 hours, week, two weeks etc, they need to actually make changes to the game which they've already made very clear for a long time they have no desire to change.
Eve is a complex game, this is one of its values, however there are also a 100 things which seem to be complex, difficult or awkward for no reason what so ever.
Examples - The same menu being replicated in multiple places, like corp member lists, market order windows - HIDDEN MENUs, it took them 5 years to move half of the chat setting from a hidden tiny triangle on the eve-mail window, that same 5 years to turn the mail system into an actual standard format email type ui. - All keyboard keys go into chat. Rather than the intelligent system, where you use an operator like / to start talking, so that the keyboard can be used shortcuts and keybindings, they make chat the default of all the keys - General horrible UI, bad naming, bad groupings of sub-menus, bad layouts, etc etc --------------------------------------

Edited by: ThrashPower on 15/09/2010 15:07:18 @op to name a few reasons why the game is not getting a lot of subscribers
eve combat is pretty simple, the majority of pvp fights are one sided ganks, the expansions are free (nothing good is free) and the ui is clumsy and outdated.
the game is ok, but compared to other mmos eve has a long way to go
also the whole eve is hard thing is just an excuse used by bad players, its no harder than wow or other generic fantasy based mmo. Those mmos might seem easier to get into, but that is mainly because they have a lot more fan-made documentation.
single-shard is perhaps the only thing that makes the game worth playing instead of other mmos

Eve just isn't that good. It lacks quite a lot of features and there's still a lot of room for improvements. PvE is mostly a montonous business. The game also emphasizes pirating and PvP a lot in some quite unrealistic ways (standings repair, insurance) which doesn't help balancing the game. It still a nice game but very far from perfection. Some other games out there have features that are far more sophisticated than EVE's.

because of the simple combat system (aproach and orbit) and because PvE is the most boring thing they have ever seen in any game. Also the complexity and stupid UI. Those things hit their face from the begining and they don't get to see what EVE truely offers what other games wont = risk and rewards, penalty to death, 'never ending' evolving game.

A long time ago a group of heroic and ambitious developers started to create a universe beyond imagination. The universe evolved and grew and grew. Many people heard of this special place where everything was possible, you could even fly cows from one station to another in your space ship! But people were anxious to subscribe, as they heard of the humongous learning involved to be able to participate in just everyday events.
But then Facebook arrived and a game called Farmville entered the stage, and those people once interested and fascinated about EVE started hoarding cows there instead...

Something like four out of five newbies who join my corp quit the game within a month, even if they get through the trial period. We used to take players who were 1 or 2 days old, until we got burned by a spy alt. The game doesn't even get their attention, much less hold it. The ones who say why they are quitting say that it's the learning curve, the fact that the game is stacked against newcomers for at least the first several months of play, and the suicide ganking.
Once it becomes clear to a player that older players in EVE will always have an enormous advantage over him, he has to rethink his commitment to the game. There is no level-up ceiling in Eve.
There are elements in Eve that would make me play forever, including the corp structure and the open ended nature of the environment. But there are other elements in Eve, like the nastiness of the player base and their obsession with tear-collection, their mockery of younger players and "weaker" players, both on forums and in chat, that might make me angry enough to leave the game tomorrow.
The side of this game that might drive me away from it is the depressing nature of interaction with PvP obsessed players. This game allows people to be total jerks in every way, and then writes news stories about them when they betray enough people or cause enough grief. It's hard enough dealing with human beings without having a game to remind you that they're really even worse than you think.

Ding! Nailed it. Games nowadays award "achievements" for starting level 1. Something you can't even avoid doing to play the game. Given that gamers keep buying this garbage up, that's got to say something about the average modern gamer.

It's not just the percentage he has wrong. How do the game mechanics help pirates, I'm not sure he even plays Eve. Back to the topic. Does it really matter how many people play. I love it and I sure most of you guys do as well. Alot of emo kids probably try it and rage quit in a day. Thats a good thing in my opinion though. Eve's about survival of the fittest.

Ofc, players of other games are all stupid and EVE players are so smart and cool .. so the game must be nber cool as well .. sure, take things personal: if EVE isn't the best so you aren't because you play it? Nice indirect way to say you're so great and the rest isn't! Is this some kind of misplaced patriotism, twisted narcism, overcompensating a inferiority complex or what .. ?

Edited by: Luminak Narz on 15/09/2010 21:22:16 The honest truth is that a lot of people just find Eve boring. Check out the MMO report on G4Tv:
http://g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/707400/The-MMO-Report-Thursday-September-9th.html
I really don't think CCP has put a lot of thought on designing engaging content for new players. There is a belief that Eve is just too hard for the average gamer, and they think a better tutorial will solve the problem. Not the case. Like it or not, most gamers are coming into the game with expectations they've derived from other MMO's. In comparision, Eve is slow-paced, has a tedious, unattractive UI (with microscopic fonts), and has repetitive, monotonous PvE. PvP is hard to learn from the start, and so it becomes completely dependent on the corp/alliance they join. This is not really a winning strategy for attracting new players. Inevitably, only the motivated player who "gets" what the game is really about (through independent reading, or info from other players) is gonna stick with it. If only the game played from the start the way CCP's trailers look like, there would be way more players. It shouldn't be a surprise that the Eve gaming population is lower than other MMO's.

I'm leaving Eve(temporarily, no complaints, just need a change) when my account expires Oct 2. Why? I love missions. Eve missions really suck and there's so few. Most are exactly the same with different names(Guristas/Angels Extravaganza for example). No, you can't have my stuff. I will be back.
