Well, they'll need a scout at least. Last time I flew a freighter in lowsec, I did so just after DT, and I had a friend online checking if the systems i went through REALLY were empty...
Think about it. If you're in lowsec, and you get scrammed and webbed by something able to tank the sentry guns, how long is it gonna take for you to get back to the gate? And is there really anything else you can do to save you?
Don't be a comedy kill mail, scout and/or escort your freighters in lowsec.

very bad idea...
but some ways to mitigate the possibility of getting killed
1) always scout ahead, the more scouts the better.
2) have an alt or a friend in a fast locking ship that has a web on it. When you jump the gate into the next system, as you hit warp have that pilot use his web on you. You will warp instantly to the next gate.
3) Use the ingame map and / or dotlan to see what low sec systems have alot of fighting in them.
4) repeat step 1, 2 and 3. ------- "The Lord loosed upon them his fierce anger All of his fury and rage. He dispatched against them a band of Avenging Angels" - The Scriptures, Book II, Apocalypse 10:1

People who respond with negative put-downs in an attempt to be witty are really just the lowest form of life. There's plenty of reasons why a player might not be completely sure about this, maybe they're in a small corp that's never done anything with a freighter before; perhaps he thinks the seemingly large amount of structure gives you a buffer big enough to tank your way through one or two jumps.
So people who reply with (to pick an example at random) 'you really are just f***ing awful' are so lame it's difficult to believe. The reply is a variation on a theme that has literally been done to death, simply by invoking that particular meme you are lowering yourself to the mental capacity of pond-scum at best.
And the same goes for all the other dumb one-liners, especially the 'x/10' marking type of reply. These guys make pond scum look like Noam Chomsky.
Still, several people offered actual advice so it's not a dead loss, and I'm not a complete nob-end. Simply reading the subject text of this particular post was a good laugh because on the surface it really is a hilarious question to ask. But that's as far as you need to take it. One short *giggle* and then some actual useful facts if you have any to contribute. If you have no useful facts to contribute (a state far more common than you probably realise) then the *giggle* on it's own just isn't worth it. Post nothing instead.
Why have I even bothered with this polite rant? Well, I'm trying to help those who use the '3/10' or 'you are awful' replies. Those posts were funny once, because they were posted by people with some command of a thing known as 'wit'. They, of course, have long since moved onto other put-downs that are still funny due to use of the aforementioned 'wit'. But those of you still rolling out the same tired things do not have this 'wit', have never had it, and never will have it. My advice is simply to try and contribute something useful to the forums - your command of comedic prose is practically non-existent and you'll do everyone, including yourself, a big favour by not trying to be something you're not.
Please note, none of this is an attempt by myself to be funny. I genuinely wanted to point out as clearly as possible what absolute turd-blossoms most of you are.

This is my first freighter and I wasn't sure how well it would stand to attack considering there no open slots for modules and it's as slow as molasses. So I was curious, and yes the question was sincere.

There are tricks but the most important is to scout ahead.
One trick: Escort the ship with a small one -- as well as a scout the flies ahead.
The small ship webs your freighter so it can jump to warp faster at each gate. Webs lower your max speed but not your acceleration so you obtain the lower warp threshold much faster. It helps spending less time as a "sitting duck" while aligning/accelerating at gates.
This trick means you'll want to use 3 ships -- freighter, webbifier close escort and point scout. Don't try and swap the scout for the close-escort, that's got issues for less savvy pilots (some do this but it is riskier).
Think about why you want/need a scout at all. If it's with the freighter, you are liable be a tad late at warning not to approach a gate with a camp on the other side. Many gate campers keep a look-out on the other side of a gate they are camping and will go through gates, even into highsec, to nail a freighter. It's a rich prize.
-------
To Karma -- ouch. I thought I gave a fairly 'witty' reply that was accurate. Use an escort or your chances are slim. Oh well, back to the 'joke' drawing board... Or not. Some folks have no sense of humor. *snicker*

There is a word that should never be used when discussing lowsec. That word is "safe". The only exception to this rule is if the word "not" is involved.
That's not to say that it should be avoided of course, just that there is no possible way to make moving something as innately vulnerable as a freighter around in lowsec entirely risk-free. The best you can do is minimise the risks. -

If the goal is to move the freighter from high sec to 0.0 (hence going trough low sec) then use worm holes to get there.
It takes longer of course, and it's unlikely you get to the target system but you can get down to the target region and then simply use 0.0 travel protocols from there.

It's your first freighter. Even in high sec you should be looking over your shoulder. Never ever fly afk. It's a big boat, slow as hell but still can be destroyed with a little effort.
Crank up the necessary navigation skills to 5 and the freighter goes, if you fly alone and don't use the webifying trick, a bit faster into warp, still leaving much room to get ganked.
I wouldn't bring it to low sec, ever. Just undock in high sec and see how frakking long it takes to align and get into warp.
If you serious about bringing in freighter(s) into low sec, train and safe up for a Jump freighter. You still need a friend to light up a cyno for you but it's much, much less dangerous to bring down to low sec, then a normal freighter.
