congrats!
It's just a matter of time before HDD go the way of picture tube video monitors.

that will only happen when you have 1 or even 2 TB SSD that go for the same prices as HDD that is. ---

Honestly when I was younger I probably would've agreed but as I age I really don't mind waiting a millisecond or 5 more.
If something is cheaper and not bad I find it more efficient for the money.
Cost efficiency > convenience. Now I find my time valuable, and approximate probably 45$ worth of my time put into viewing the forums over the past little bit that I have. But I won't get so far as to break it down into the millisecond threshold.

You mean into my flat, for bargain prices? Great! While I don't really need more CRTs a few more HDDs wouldn't hurt.

It's not "a millisecond or 5".
Cold boot in 5 to 10 seconds. Starting any app in milliseconds instead of seconds.
It's something you get used to with an SSD and something you'll miss when it's gone...
On the other hand, people do keep having the wrong idea. SSD's won't replace normal HD's, at least not for a very long time. However, most people still seem to be stuck on the idea that "there can be only 1 hard disk in a computer". The genious of an SSD is that you can have the stuff that matters (windows or any other OS and most small apps) on the SSD and have a normal disk for storage and games. You don't need more than ~64gb for a windows installation partition, i imagine it's even less for other OS'. Ultimately it's worth the price, simply for the convenience it offers. Over a month or so you'll probably "earn back" the $ per hour equivalent to how much an SSD cost by how much time you save - All the little bits add up.

Aye,
They are nice - looking to get one when I upgrade my PC next year and get rid of my loud, hot and noisy 'raptor.
Did you keep/buy a storage drive also? And are you using Windows 7?

HDD are still the standard because:
OCZ 1TB SSD = ú2,326.25 Western Digital 1TB AV-spec HDD = ú54.80
so I could get 42 of the WD HDD's for the cost of one SSD?
TBQH I have no boot time issues and only boot/shut down once a day at the most, my machine takes about 30 seconds to get to desktop including the 10 second POST. ===================================== It smells of spoon! ===================================== |

This is rather unfortunately the reality and current problem with SSD drives. They simply don't have the lifetime of a platter HDD. As Cpt Placeholder says, after a few million times writing and deleting data to your SSD transistors (I think) will start burning out. There's nothing you can do about this, it's simply the way that SSD's work given current technology.

You could upgrade to the fastest processor around, you wouldn't get the performance boost of a 100 º SSD.

Edited by: Meiyang Lee on 02/10/2010 11:20:09 SLC chips (very expensive, only used in Enterprise level SSDs) can take a few million read-write cycles.
MLC chips (those used in consumer SSDs) can handle only a few thousand (~10k I believe) read-write cycles.
Wear-levelling is the one thing that'll be keeping an SSD functional over longer periods of time, along with trim commands to reduce the number of cycles needed to properly delete data. The estimated lifespan of a consumer SSD before wear starts kicking in is about 5 years, more than enough for most consumer PCs, so it's not an issue. But it is the one big weakness for SSDs compared to a traditional platter based HDD.

Surely those two products cater for two completely different users?
An SSD on a 1 TB drive can only be for moving vast amounts of data in the fastest way possible, probably server or networked media environment, cloud, virtual environment. Whereas the other would be a simple storage drive, which to be honest, is what we, you and I would use it for. But for Operating systems, applications and games, we wouldn't need a 1 TB drive and this is where SSD comes in and literally wipes the floor with traditional HDD design.
What you really should be doing is comparing the fastest all-singing and dancing 128GB HDD, with the slowest, grade school IQ SSD - and then we can compare the two.

the point in his post wasn't how SSD compares to HDD in terms of data and all that.
the point in his post is SSD's won't replace HDD's anytime soon because of price.
ok yes you can get one and install the OS and other software in it for extra speed and performance, but in terms of storage and, as stated above, reliability, HDD's are still far ahead.
I still won't deny that SSD is the future, but they will only become viable when they totally replace the good ol' HDD in terms of price/GB, and that's still very far away. ---

I kept my 500gb samsung spinpoint, but that's pretty much useless now, since all my music/movies/games/photos/everything else, is stored on my server, which ofc is on my gigabit network :) And yes, using windows 7 + fedora 13.

ohgod no, the SSD is worth it, absolutely. its not only the ludicrous speed you get, but also the silence, and power usage :D '*turn on computer* ... is this thing even on? *looks at computer*, oh theres the login screen...

you need to get 4 and put them in raid, to really get the new age experience.

2-3times faster, VR's are pretty worthless nowadays even compared to a normal HDD...
SSD's are nice, not worth it though if you have enough system memory. Sure OS loads faster but...

Cold start to desktop in ~12-15 seconds with Windows 7 64-bit. also in pure linear reads your Velociraptor will be faster, it's random reads where SSDs get their real speed boost.
