If something is cheaper and not bad I find it more efficient for the money. Cost efficiency > convenience. Now I find my time valuable, and approximate probably 45$ worth of my time put into viewing the forums over the past little bit that I have. But I won't get so far as to break it down into the millisecond threshold.

But I won't get so far as to break it down into the millisecond threshold. It's not "a millisecond or 5". Cold boot in 5 to 10 seconds. Starting any app in milliseconds instead of seconds. It's something you get used to with an SSD and something you'll miss when it's gone... On the other hand, people do keep having the wrong idea. SSD's won't replace normal HD's, at least not for a very long time. However, most people still seem to be stuck on the idea that "there can be only 1 hard disk in a computer". The genious of an SSD is that you can have the stuff that matters (windows or any other OS and most small apps) on the SSD and have a normal disk for storage and games. You don't need more than ~64gb for a windows installation partition, i imagine it's even less for other OS'. Ultimately it's worth the price, simply for the convenience it offers. Over a month or so you'll probably "earn back" the $ per hour equivalent to how much an SSD cost by how much time you save - All the little bits add up. "If you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all"

TBQH I have no boot time issues and only boot/shut down once a day at the most, my machine takes about 30 seconds to get to desktop including the 10 second POST. ===================================== It smells of spoon! =====================================

They simply don't have the lifetime of a platter HDD. As Cpt Placeholder says, after a few million times writing and deleting data to your SSD transistors (I think) will start burning out.There's nothing you can do about this, it's simply the way that SSD's work given current technology.

MLC chips (those used in consumer SSDs) can handle only a few thousand (~10k I believe) read-write cycles. Wear-levelling is the one thing that'll be keeping an SSD functional over longer periods of time, along with trim commands to reduce the number of cycles needed to properly delete data. The estimated lifespan of a consumer SSD before wear starts kicking in is about 5 years, more than enough for most consumer PCs, so it's not an issue. But it is the one big weakness for SSDs compared to a traditional platter based HDD.

AK the point in his post wasn't how SSD compares to HDD in terms of data and all that. the point in his post is SSD's won't replace HDD's anytime soon because of price. ok yes you can get one and install the OS and other software in it for extra speed and performance, but in terms of storage and, as stated above, reliability, HDD's are still far ahead. AK I kept my 500gb samsung spinpoint, but that's pretty much useless now, since all my music/movies/games/photos/everything else, is stored on my server, which ofc is on my gigabit network :) And yes, using windows 7 + fedora 13. SSD's are nice, not worth it though if you have enough system memory. Sure OS loads faster but...
