tl;dr : It's in the subject
10 years - It's actually an unimaginably long time
Some quick headlines from the last 10 years:
A Pentium 4 was still hot stuff (pun intended) (2002) DirectX 9 is released (2002) The first FireFox browser is released (2002) The Euro is introduced (2002) There was no MySpace (until 2003) The video game industry's profits surpassed the movie industry's (ca. 2004) There was no Facebook (until 2004) There was no YouTube (until 2005) LCD's (over CRTs) starts becoming mainstream (ca 2005) Pluto was still a planet (no longer from 2006) There was no Blu-Ray (until 2006) There was no Twitter (until 2006) The LHC was finally done (2008) The first Chrome browser is released (2008)
I of course left out the most important one that should go at the top of the list:
August 1st 2002 BIG was born - So happy 10 year anniversary to us :-)
Initially having just 2 members, Wayland (long gone) and yours truly at the helm (still here, and still at the helm).
I still recall being ridculed over the name in my very first post about the formation of BIG :-) A name I had very deliberatly chosen for several reasons: 1: In all it's simplicity it encompasses what everyone aspires to in any game. Becoming BIG (in all it's myriad variations) 2: It was short and simple to remember! 3: Untold amount of fun could be had with puns!!! Alowing my to inject the corpname just about everywhere :-)
Today I dare say BIG has become so much of a "brand" that no one really thinks about the meaning of the word "big" when they see "BIG". It's simply another EVE corporation.
With a very very long history.
At first it was a history that simply played out on the EVE forums. And back then, you had to register your corp name on the forums, and CCP would then approve (or not) your corp (name) Everyone was RolePlaying back then, as very few was actually in the beta yet. Corps lived (and died!) solely on the forums, and mighty battles (of wits) ensued there.
This all changed for BIG after CCP had held a dev-chat on IRC, where they as a suprise at the end gave away Beta-accounts to everyone present.
Suddenly BIG was ingame. And I made my first "serious" ISK trading in Megacyte :-)
Just before Beta ended, I decided to try my hands at holding a lottery. Which, surprise surprise, was named "The BIG Lottery". And it's been running non-stop ever since.
Then came release : May 2003.
Here we hit a slight snag when I tried to re-create BIG. "Corp names have to have at least 4 characters" - No way! A quick chat with a dev on IRC (man that was so easy back then...) and it was quickly fixed.
Ofc - My memory almost *has* to be of on that one (it being in release), must have been one of the Beta resets before Release... or..? I just very vividly recall the horror of discovering I could no longer create BIG...
Fast forward - BIG becomes the first corp to sell a Thorax on the free market in Sinq Laison (before that they simply traded hands privately)
A few months later the BIG Deal is born - First share sold October 9th, 2003. And it's still running :-) There a tale to be told about the early days of the BIG
In the meantime BIG had joined the Fountain Alliance (FA), one of only two super powers back then. When FA said jump, people asked how high. The few that didn't seized to exist shortly after.
Oh and this was before alliances existed as an ingame mechanics at all... and sov... When Alliances was introduced to the game, I become the Executor of FA - At it's hight having ~2600 members. As FA executor, I got to be one of the very few players to ever have interacted directly with the Jove (live event tied into introducing alliances into the game - It's all the Joves fault!)
This was all back when, on a good day, EVE had 5K players online (about 40K-50K subscriptions). Would have to multiply with ~10 to scale it to todays numbers.
FA had a good run, I still have very fond memories of "the good old times) - But eventually got killed, although it took about a year... That's another long tale.
I was invited by CCP to sit on the very first CSM of EVE (not the CSM you know today), where meetings, between CCP and the players of the CSM, where held on IRC. It kind of "faded away" after a few meetings sadly. More tales to be told...
This post is already too long... Too many things to mention, so many stories to tell... I'll cut it really short from here...
BIG has since the demise of FA been in a number of other alliances Ka-Tet (drone regions) - until 2008 LFA (providence) - until 2010 ME (North) - until 2011 GENTS (all over the place... Mostly West side of the map) - Present
Roughly a year and half in each.
Other stuff BIG has done over the years:
In 2006 BMBE (BIG Merchant Bank of EVE) was formed - And it's still running. This was the 2nd only IPO in EVE (1st one long gone)
I think I'll just leave the history lesson at that :-)
A HUGE thanks goes out to all the members of BIG, both past and present for making BIG what it is. And for keeping the dream alive for so many years - and also a huge thanks to CCP for giving us the marvelous sandbox to live out those dreams in.
Here's to 10 more years (at least) :-) |

Not the world's best post, as I kinda had to cut myself short - As I started to see the post grow and grow and grow... So a bit rambling from about midways...

oh hey another one of these....
Can't we just have one thread where all the pubs post about how old their awesome corps are? What do you think mods?
Please?
Or rename CAOD to "Pubbie Corp birthday subforum" |

Only if we can have just one thread where all the goon scrubs like you are allowed to post. Then you get my vote. Until then: get out. |

Congrats guys, I remember you guys from when I was in TTI way back in beta and release. The Big Lottery, your membership in FA (whom I found myself shooting at/being shot at by for a good while in the early days).
Any how, great to see you still going, all the best chaps in the coming decade.

Just out of curiousity, how did you contribute to this greatness? Oh yeah I see, you joined Eve a year ago and your owning it!
