Yeah, they had this and the link on the news.
Pretty cool what the average person can do now.
They even recovered their pay load package in tact. At first, I thought they'd just used a video phone to transmit their imagery back but they actually had a recorder up there - recorded - and then recovered the recorder.
And ... for those of you with a couple of hundred thousand laying about that you don't know what to do with - they'll be giving people rides into space soon too. Virgin Galactic.

Taking people to space for 5 minutes is good, but this just seems better somehow. I mean any old billionare can go to space, but for an ordinary guy to send an iphone to space and back..
Maybe I'm just saying that because I'll never go to space but meh.

If I could honestly afford a quick trip up into space I would totally do it. If you put me in a suit and let me do a space walk that would be even better. Sure we have seen pictures of space and Earth from above just like we've seen pictures of other cities or maybe exotic animals, but it never compares to experiencing the moment through your own 2 eyes.

After it starts running commercially and baring that there are no catastrophic events that set back development/advancement, space flight could become affordable for those with moderate levels of expendable income in say 30+ years.
About 5 years of where it will be mostly billionaires doing it. After that there will be about 5+ years of 100 millionaires regularly affording the luxury. Following that a decade of millionaires doing it with one final decade of those making $250+ participating. After that it will probably turn into what sky diving was 15-20 years ago.

Yeah what they did was really so cool. I mean ... anyone who wanted to could do it.
As to "Space Tourism" ... personally I think it's the space junkies grasping at straws - if they think they're going to really make an impact with this. We'll just have to see. The one thing they cannot afford is to get anyone killed.
That's a big part of the problem now. When we first started doing this - we and the Russians were using Test Pilots - who were actually safer in those rockets than they were in the aircraft they were testing. Hell ... the death rate of early aviators - through WWII - IN TRAINING - was horrendous. It's nothing like Civil Aviation today - where so much is about safety. These people had incredibly powerful (for their days) pieces of machinery ... that would kill them in a heart beat if they ****ed up.
But what is great about the commercialism of space travel - is that it's a start. The only way we are really going to colonize space ... is if someone finds a way to make money off of it - and enough money at that to justify the expense. Until then ... we're dependent on the whims of our elected officials, the public and the economy for funding ... *sigh* I look at the gutting that Obama just gave NASA and is makes me sick ...
Anyway ... this is a bright note and a real accomplishment.

Yes!
Because what space really needs is more Apple products.
I mean seriously.. WHY for the love of god an iphone?
My dad bought one too... he was kind of disappointed though when I told him the reason all the calls he's made with it thus far had connection difficulties because they (Apple) failed to design the most fundamental part of the MOBILE PHONE properly.
I lol'd at him. __________________________________________________

If you wathced carefully, the video was not made with the Iphone - it was made with a video recorder. The Iphone was added in for the GPS ability. The title is misleading.
