So in a world without DT, what will happen to 0.0 players who get stuck in space due to one of the literally dozens of things that sometimes go wrong? I'm thinking specifically of systems not loading the characters properly and not ending their sessions, leaving people stranded with unusable characters until someone restarts the system.
As you might be aware, GMs refuse to support 0.0 players with these matters. There is the very real risk of getting people stuck for however long it might be until a node is rebooted.
To tell a campfire story, during 2009 i was travelling with a fleet around 100 people through period basis towards delve. We were somewhat scattered over three systems and moving fast, when suddenly one of the systems on our way just trapped people. They did not load grid while chat worked fine. Nobody could move and relogging didn't work.
Four hours and several escalated petitions later, there was still no gm willing to reboot the node, kill our sessions, or do whatever it takes to get out of there. All of us had to wait until DT to be able to leave the system again.
There were precisely two hostiles in that system, trapped with us..
So, long story short: You're aware that unless you revise GM policies, a "no downtime" doctrine will severely hurt 0.0 players?

I must admit, CCP is very impressive in terms of how they blog. Very. Kudos to all teams involved, and whomever kicked whomever's butt to get the recent trend of "information overload" going.
I myself work with databases; DBAs worldwide lament how buggy the RDBMS software is (no matter it be from Microsoft, Oracle, Sybase... can't speak to IBM), and CCP's outreach efforts put all these big companies to shame. (calling Sybase "big" in this context is perhaps too generous).
Keep it up, CCP!

NOOOOOOO!!!!! When are CCP going to learn???? By completely removing the downtime lots of your players will lose their daily feeding time! When theres no downtime there will be no feeding time, and as such people will in the end succumb to starvation!! Starving players are bad m'kay!! Its bad enough reducing their feeding and showering time by half!

Nice that you are trying to optimize the downtime and such, but tbh i cannot understand why you are shortening it too.
I predict the following will happen: The first few downtimes will be 20-30 minutes just fine.
But then "something" will happen and we will have 40-50 minutes. And this will happen every few days/weeks.
Result: Especially the newer players who can't understand the reason for DT will go emo everytime you guys make a little mistake. This rage will accumulate over a few weeks, lowering the trust in CCP once again and you will have no effective benefit from lowering the DT at all.
So why not keeping the DT at 1 hour "offically" but have the server up again at 11:20-11:30 nonetheless. That will make people happy because the server is up earlier than they expect (I know it makes me happy everytime it happens now). And even if problems arise and DT takes longer, players won't care because that's the expected length of the downtime anyway.
So use the improvements that you guys made in the DT-progress and give yourself a little room for mistakes. --------------------------------------------------

Atleast we need once a week DT what fix all the usual problems. Problem what most EU and late AU tz players has is that the DT is during the day and it is bad. Option to set DT into early morning in EU tz, late night US tz and during the day on AU tz. So what we going to have is most 2 heavy Timezones covert (+ not sure on AU / asian usage). This incomming 30min isn't so bad at all (EU is happy , US is happy, most AU tz is happy). Pushing DT to time where server has less people online in same time would be best.

Unfortunately, computers have stopped getting "faster". We have essentially hit the physical limit with regards to maximum clock speeds with silicon semiconductors. You will notice that the desktop processor with the *highest* clock speed is the Pentium 4 at 3.8 GHz.
That was 6 years ago.
Now most fast processors are in the 3-3.3GHz range, though there are some that go as high as 3.6 GHz. Simply put, Intel and AMD have COMPLETELY abandoned any attempts at making their processors "faster". They instead focus on multiple core processing which relies on multithreading to see any real speed increases.
Since EVE's nodes are single threaded, they can not take (significant) advantage of multiple core processors. Thus they will not see any improved performance in the future, unless CCP manages to make it possible for more than one node to support a single solar system.
EDIT: I should clarify - we haven't hit the theoretical ceiling yet for silicone. However, the amount of heat generated by processors is so great that it's impossible to raise clock speeds very high without excessive cooling systems. The current world record clock speed is at around 8.2 GHz (they use liquid nitrogen cooling to get clock speeds that high). However, my point is that stock clock speeds have essentially remained the same for over 6 years now. ----------

Well so much for those edge of the seat runs through/in lowsec pre/post DT to avoid teh gank squads, also what happens to missions that aren't completed before DT once DT is ultimately removed will this be the end to their being reset?
Similarly for leaving corp/dropping roles/wardec that are supposed to take 24hrs but at least one only needs until DT to come/go will those now actually work on 24hr timers or whut?
I know we aren't there yet but you can't drop a bomb like this and not expect questions.

This will be a great day in EvE, no more winding down in the morning to wait for up time. Even worse for the folks over by CCP who have the DT during the middle of the day. Would be nice to have a "we will be taking the server down tonight for 15 minutes" warning every once in a while. Great Job on this.

This and other "post DT" rushes.
While a bit annoying it does sound like a good thing.

Have you been able to shift maintenance jobs so they can be done while TQ is open or have their need been eleminated.
We have done both. Over the past 2 years, all new services and upgrades to existing services have been implemented/optimized so that they are not dependant on the daily downtime. Death to downtimes ! |

Does it mean that in "not too distant future" you'll be able to remap systems between the nodes without need of downtime? Will the node reboot (players disconnection) be still required for this?
We are already able to remap systems during runtime but it requires to disconnect all users.(The node doesnt reboot.) As the project moves forward we will hopefully be able to provide better user experience for the remaps. Death to downtimes ! |

This must be the most idiotic question ever but with CCP's reputation are you sure 30 minutes is enough for a downtime. I mean almost each mistakes you made requires wayyyy more than 1 hour of downtime. With no updates this resulted into a mass colective suicide emo rage quit cult.
Again, is 30 minutes a good thing ? Honestly, I was happy with 1h. Besides it wasn't in my timezone so I didn't care about it either. Even if it was, it would be a small break to go away from my computer. Which is always good for everyone.

I remember when DT was typically under an hour then mostly went to just over 1/2 hr and most recently was like 15minutes and under except for a short stint before a patch/expansion IIRC so they can manage a shorter DT. We'll have to wait and see if all their improvements are stable enough to hold to it, I personally like having the game shutdown for a short bit but whatever, people across the world get mad cause they are upside down, their toilets flush in the wrong direction, DT lets them go grab a cup of coffee and then they have to deal with people in their homes.

Im actually surprised you are working toward a downtime-less future. The downtime has become part of the ebb and flow of eve, both culturally and technically. I'm not sure how I'd feel about there not being a downtime... would it change things ingame? would I miss it? would it effect the 23hour cycle of eve.
I always noticed that the server is usually quite full just before downtime, and then after downtime it dropped and there is a slow and gradual build-up of people coming back online. This is what I mean about the ebb and flow.
I am curious, is there a reason you want to have a downtime-less Eve? Is it simply that you believe there is a desire from the playerbase for it?

As for the respawns and such, they'll be spread out over the day and we'll have endless debates on the forum whether veldspar respawn happens at 3 or 4 o'clock.

So, does this mean there will be some type of weekly or monthly maintenance instead?

i think this is a valid question, whats the answer? If you don't yet have an approach to it why not a auto-logout due to inactivity

Sir,
Your trolling abilities are close to level 0. You might want to learn that macros aren't affected by inactivity since they're ...hmm ... macros. And thus sending commands to the game every few seconds/minutes just like a real player would
I recommend that you biomass this alt (and your main if possible) and never come back. That way, you won't also be tempted to afk cloak in high sec to grief mission runners.

If a macro glitches out and stops sending commands, I would think the macro user would WANT an auto logout due to inactivity.

There will not be a weekly or monthly "fixed" DT. However, there will be a patchly and a fail-ly DT.

Why is it im not so looking forward to having no downtime? surely this would mean if things are going wrong we will have unsheduled downtimes rather than having a down time each day which we all know is comming?
Im all for a shorter DT but none at all?
And as said before how would downtime reliant things be done, is it possible to do them while the server is running?
i know occasionally now we have major issues that force a server reboot etc but im just talking in general issues that can wait till DT to be solved etc

Pretty much every other MMO in existence is up 24/7 with downtime only for occasional scheduled maintenance or problems. EVE culture has actually grown around the idea of a daily downtime, which means that even if the technical reasons for a DT are eliminated, artificially created reasons remain.
That said, if certain problems such as 24/7 cloaked ships or macros can be dealt with, then having the cluster up 24/7 would mean a more consistent gameplay experience without being interrupted on a regular basis. I think I'd like that. ----------------------------------- You will be assimilated...bunghole! |
