I'm not new to internet forums but as a newcomer even I was a little shocked at the number of disbelieving, sarcastic, and sometimes downright spiteful comments made on nearly every single thread.
Why so much anger?
It reminds me a little of a scene from the Robbin Williams film: What Dreams May Come, in which the dead people are stuck up to their necks in mud with nothing to do but rant and rave about anything and everything; in short, wallowing in their own muck.

Very vocal minority more than anything. The vast majority probably don't even bother to read the forums.

Why so much anger?
As a whole, the Eve Online player base is very attached to the game. Things have always been touchy regarding the perceived health, playability and enjoyability of the game. Over the last year, various PR fumbles and poorly implemented features have only created a worse perception of the health of the product.
In other words, people are angry because the game they love isn't getting treated as well as they demand it to be.

I think our roleplaying friends on the forum are taking it all a bit too seriously and try to be consistently "harsh, cold and hostile" ..

I have been posting on the forums of about 5-7 games and I must say EVE's is by far the most hostile and conservative if you have a different opinion. If not, they're actually quite helpful.
Not that I let it stop me, of course ..

Some people like to play "look at me I'm a smart and tough guy" via the forums. It's proves their e-peen apparently.
The original point in a post or an improvement to the game means nothing to them (and likely nothing ever will). They like to moan to either trick people into their own emo rage and get their rocks off for that, or they are likely very obnoxious people in RL.
But yes, it does seem to be an eve forum "sport".

Because when you have to answer the same question and run over the same old arguments for the umpteenth time because, once again, someone assumes that EVE is just like [insert whatever irrelevant object of comparison here], people tend to get tired and testyà

That's probably because the main purpose of playing those other games isn't to grief other players. EVE is the cesspool of scumbags because here you can freely live out what you'd get punched for in the face IRL. Yeah, sure, there's some carebearing going on in EVE but the majority of players takes joy and pride in ruining someone's day. |

Because the premise of this game and the underhanded, mean and ruthless things it allows you to do attract a certain type of person, and those persons tend to act out more. I agree with OP that these forums do raise the bar of "mean" to a new level. I think you could post about a sunny day and be called everything but a CCP Dev (there aren't many who are cruel enough to use that insult).

Dear sir, it is called 'forum warriors'
Some of them feel better when they fight for what's right and make it public, others make amusing remarks and feed on the sarcasm and emotions that forum posts generate.
It is a form of self-entertainment, which can be more intense than intracorporate chatter and more dense than compressed veldspar.

Exactly. There is not enough space in the known universe. You have to move to a wormhole and pray nobody finds you. Then you can be as smiley and happy of a person as you like. Of course, an establishment in a wormhole is ASKING for trouble when someone *does* find you.

This was a triumph. I'm making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS. It's hard to overstate my satisfaction.
Aperture Science: We do what we must because we can. For the good of all of us Except the ones who are dead.
(Chorus 1) But there's no sense crying over every mistake You just keep on trying till you run out of cake And the science gets done and you make a neat gun For the people who are still alive.
I'm not even angry. I'm being so sincere right now. Even though you broke my heart and killed me. And tore me to pieces. And threw every piece into a fire. As they burned it hurt because I was so happy for you.
Now these points of data make a beautiful line And we're out of beta we're releasing on time. So I'm GLaD I got burned think of all the things we learned For the people who are still alive.
Go ahead and leave me. I think I prefer to stay inside. Maybe you'll find someone else to help you. Maybe Black Mesa - THAT WAS A JOKE. HA HA, FAT CHANCE. Anyway, this cake is great: It's so delicious and moist.
Look at me still talking when there's science to do. When I look out there it makes me GLaD I'm not you. I've experiments to run there is research to be done On the people who are still alive
And believe me I am still alive. I'm doing science and I'm still alive. I feel FANTASTIC and I'm still alive. While you're dying I'll be still alive. And when you're dead I will be still alive.
Still alive Still alive

It's largely because of the relaxed moderation and harsh nature of EVE. CCP allows anger and venting on the forums as long as you post something remotely contructive and don't be obscene/very insulting. Same stuff gets moderated pretty fast on many other forums. It also gives trolls and forum *****s more room to work with. In addition to that, to succeed in EVE you have to compete against others, the rules allow lying/scamming, losses will happen and those losses can really hurt. This leads to a pretty confrontational game where people with certain attitude types succeed and it gets reflected on the forums.
The conservative part is propably correct, since we love our game and most of the industry and the players don't. There are simply large amount of players who don't get EVE or don't care if their wishes ruins what EVE is as long as they get their fun. EVE players have a very low tolerance on that crap and are more then happy to express their views on such matters.

While still others use the forums to shower in their obvious moral superiority. This is the mooseknuckle variant of the epeen.

I come from years of EQ2 and the main difference I've noted in the forum use is that here in EVE, it's more common to shoot anger and frustration at other players. There are always posts about how the developers screw up, but here it's okay to tell someone what you think of them without as much moderation. It can be a turn-off for newish players, but as so many EVE players point out, this is a PVP non-optional game so learning to shrug off rude people should be an early and important lesson.

When you spend enought time waiting on things. Like skill training.. the market to sell... your mining lasers to yield...your stuff to build... fleets to form up... jumping through gates. You become very cynacle and bitter about everything because you generally have had enough time to think about what's going to happen so often. That you pretty much know for an absolute certainty. It isn't going to be that great. Probably ppointless.

This, one more Concord should shoot looters wreck and... Gah!
I am always willing to give my two ISK to any question and try to help out new players that don't have experience and old players that don't have the specialization.
I help people who can fly Tengu's learn about Exploration and Lo-Sec PVE while I do it in a Rupture or Cane. I learned it from experienced players who gave me advice. people are always willing to give an opinion if you pose a serious question. Like me if you can deal with my sense of Humour and take it as light hearted(see above).
Ignore trolls and insults, laugh at the comedy and listen to the people who want to help you succeed, don't ignore them get a good back and forth and ask questions. Usually if your serious and polite you get an Answer, it isn't always the one you hope for but now you know.

That movie was a downer, it creeped me out. The visuals were disturbing, must've cost a mint to produce, another Robin Williams attempt at mass healing of the group psyche.
Think of the Eve forums as another form of PvP, an arena where one can sharpen one's sarcasm skills and revel in the act of being clever.

A lot of people have the bitter vet syndrome. They are emotionally attached to the game and their corpies and they want to see improvements but so many things are broken or wrong and CCP refuse to solve even the trivially easy problems. I'm not even talking about...complicated...things like AFK cloaking.
For example,
- BPCs vs BPOs. For 5 years CCP said it was impossible to make them visually separable, yet not it's magically done! Bull. ****ing. ****. - Drones and disconnecting. Every single God forsaken time my connection goes haywire I lose another set of Hammerheads. It would make sense that they return to the drone bay when the ship does an emergency warp and people have been asking for it practically ever since the beginning of EVE. It would be very easy to implement. Yet, CCP has done absolutely bugger all about it. Clearly they ****ing hate every single one of you, especially Gallente players. - Cyno effects. Is there more than handful of people who actually like the crappy *blop* compared to the massive cyno storms we used to have? I don't care that it's hard to implement, it's your bloody graphics engine. Same goes for engine trails. - Amarr ships and contracts. "We're sorry, it appears you have used your crystals and we're going to make you fly 50 ****ing jumps to manually trade the ****ing ship because we were too ****ing lazy to add some sort of 'remove ammo' feature. Have a nice day". - One director disbanding the entire alliance. It's ******ed. - Nebulae. Yes, space is apparently filled with whipped cream and cotton candy. Everyone want clear black cosmos, but CCP does not give a ****. - Battle recorder. - Align to bookmarks. Good thing it only took 6 years. - Opening cans in POS hangars. - Drone damage indication in the drone bay.
I could honestly go on for hours.
So many teeny tiny annoyances that would take the God damned janitor half an hour to fix, but no, let's forget about polishing what we have now and come up with more broken **** that we can ignore.
