Nah, Lady Spank pew pewed and ganked the American Dream when it refused to join her corp. Then she podded it and unfortunately, it had forgotten to make a second clone and as with this, no longer exists. -

G. W. was able to create situation where car bombs go off in Baghdad and a few other places very very far away from America.
I guess you are one of those people who wants car bombs to go off in New York.

The USA tends to be a bit arrogant and deluded about their status in the world. You often hear American politicians attributing their superpower status to their political system and their 'can do' spirit.
The truth is that the USA became a superpower because they were the only industrial powerhouse that didn't go up in flames in the two world wars. While the rest of the world was levelled, (with China, the traditional superpower for millennia, being repeatedly levelled) the USA came out of the wars revitalised and stronger than ever.

This didn't help much either..

Just draw the lines from the China Trade Act.. Walmart's growth, China's economic growth and increased manufacturing/jobs to support increased demand on their exporting, less jobs in states via smaller business closer (thank you walmart) and desire for US produced goods (thank you walmart for importing mass products from china), less people to spend money on stuffs, collapse of internet companies/stocks.. all started when Sir Sticky Cigar put his name to paper that day. I don't blame China.. they did whats best for them. And it has obviously paid off very, very, very well for them since that moment in time.

I think you are nitpicking here. The truth is that when China acts as a cohesive political state, they are the natural superpower. Trade acts, Walmart, whatever aren't going to cause or stop that. the 20th C wars gave the USA an artificial boost, and destroyed China. China has managed to get back on it's knees now. God help the western world if they manage to get up on their feet and running with their current political system.

Time has shown that Communism (in its purest form) can not work and that you must have some sort of capitalistic system to provide support. (please see this here and here) With that said, if the Chinese switch to such a system (like the Cubans are doing) wouldn't this just be a form of government thats similar to the west's welfare state (see UK and US) but skews more towards government dependence.

I agree, this is supported by the issuance of many many loans and bonds that the EU had to pay back after the war so that everything can be rebuilt! I mean lets face it, after a certain someone had his hissy fit and started leveling the country side someone had to clean up the mess! =P

I'm happy that the system is and/or was working for you!

I agree with this for the most part, couple this with G.W. Bush's deregulation of the housing sector and you will have yourself a nice little economic pickle! However, dr doooo makes a good point. This is but a single situation and does not explain the whole thing!

Well Germany and Japan had their entire industrial capacity wiped out after WW2. But both of them rebuilt into still the world's second and third largest industrial exporters in the world with brand new machinery. They had their national identities smashed to pieces. So they started anew without the mental baggage of their imperial pasts.
Whereas Britain won in WW2 but was loosing its empire and was bankrupt. And we mentally still carried on with our imperial baggage which I feel held us back until about 30 years ago.

China is doing what we in Britain did with the industrial revolution. Not to put the fear of god into everyone but, our little island ended up building the largest empire the world has ever known so just think of what a nation with well over a billion people can do

There is one thing I hope the rise of China, India, Brazil and others make happen. A paradigm shift that most of the world's population can't have the same wasteful consumer behaviour as the 600 million of so white people on this planet.
The end of consumerism.

Sorry, consumerism is not going anywhere! all you can hope for is for it to become more efficient! And It will! Less the companies have to put into their products for them to sell the more money they pocket! IE Less waist = more money

Edited by: Vogue on 05/11/2010 22:35:46 Yes I see what you are getting at. I am a smart arse with no social life. And this is true as I don't have much of a RL social life to speak of. And I am also drunk at this present time.
But I do think what I say on forums has merit. Though of course throwing text at someone else on the internet is not as good as an argument in a pub.

The dream is what you make of it, so long as government stays out of your way.
Freedom and libery are elemental wants. Government, in the American expriment, is supposed to stay out of the way, in order to provide the oppertunity for the pursuit of happiness. That is, a life affording scope, in the classical greek meaning.
Each decision government makes for you or your neighbor, however small or hidden, is an affront to liberty, freedom and the pursuit of happiness.
If the dream has been killed, it's been dying a slow death since the 1820s.

Edited by: Vogue on 05/11/2010 22:57:51 Between 1820 and the late 1960's slavery and to the extent of it's legacy was quite alive. So the assumption that USA suffers from a linear decline that is more typical of European nations is false. For USA's strength is not that it is more enlightened than other nations but rather in it's ability to repair it's faults. Like Rocky that can bounce back from the ropes and come back stronger
But in 2010 USA this strength is weakened by the miasma of saturated media bull**** and a bit of an identity crisis. Bill Clinton recognises this and has said 'USA needs to get back into the change business'.
