Voice chats have their place... either where "hands free" real-time communication is much more important than anything else, or for mindless entertaining chatter that needs not be logged. So, in EVE, for wasting time or hectic PvP ops (or both) only. For everything else, text communication is far more desirable. Text is automatically logged, you can store a whole lot of it and not even notice it size-wise, it's searchable, and so on and so forth. And the other obvious advantage is that you can do something else involving sound while you "type-chat"... like, oh, say, listen to music or have a small chat with somebody physically in the room with you without everybody else you're "type-chatting" with hearing it, or maybe you could not bother other people that need silence around you and would be bothered by the sound of you talking and so on and so forth. _ Beginner's ISK making guide \| Manufacturer's helper \| All about reacting _

So you'd imagine if Eve had no text chatting, people would use out of game IM programs. Also where would 'voice only' start and stop? Would you have no evemails, only voicemails? How would you link show info items? So you'd only be able to be in one channel at a time, which would be highly inconvenient Voice would slow down the game a lot as well. Think of an MMO like rush hour on I-95 in Philadelphia, now imagine everybody in that traffic jam has a CB radio on channel 19(your general chat for broadcast radius). now imagine everybody keying up at once. now you could have a friend jump to channel 40 with you but lets say 19 had a good convo going, you have to leave that convo and its not like you can click the other tab and see what you missed. Voice is good for some things and bad for others, be it in WoW raids or EVE Fleet ops you need voice for whoever is leading that shindig and still have text chat for other things. Also text chat does not forget, so you can put orders or other things that are always in effect into text chat. text+voice also means you have have people discussing that funny youtube video on one tab but still listening to the FC on their headset.

There is this thing called voice fonts you know. You can sound like a female in EVE Voice if you want to.

Since I am pretty hearing impaired, voice convos come difficult to me, and particularily english or any other foreign speaking languages. Even my native language can be hard for me to grasp sometimes. And so, if eve went voice only I would play completely this game as a single player, because the alternative would be to quit since voice convos are not really an option for me. Sad, but thats the fact. besides. Voice only would be pretty annoying as hell. I doubt many would have enjoyed it...
