Hi guys,
I'm pretty new to EVE but was hoping someone could give me a run down on fitting a Merlin, I've been told not to mix weapons so you can stick at optimal range so what do you do if you have 2 launcher and 2 turret slots with 4 highslots?
Any ideas would be awesome, cheers.

Edited by: Miriam Letisse on 04/12/2010 07:20:02 In that case, you mix weapons.
The rule about not mixing weapons only applies to ships like the Ferox and Rokh, where you have options.
Edit: Another important thing to remember is to fit to your bonuses. With the Ferox and Rokh for instance you'd go with railguns.

In this case you would go either Blasters/Rockets or Railguns/Standard Missile Launchers.
Don't mix Blasters with Standard Launchers or Railguns with Rockets.

This is a fit i just threw together quickly. I prefer autocannons for their extra range, you can hit ships out to about 10kms. With blasters you're looking at 2-3kms depending on skills. You do get about 20 DPS more with the blasters though.

You fly as a tackler, in PVP, and don't concern yourself much (if at all) with your weapons.
If you want to fly PVE, the Merlin's schizo weapon hardpoint layout is hugely annoying. Get a Kestrel instead. It has a much worse tank, and it is a ***** to fit, but it puts out wonderful honey-sweet DPS.

You fly as a tackler in fleet pvp.
If you're in a gang of <5 then for god's sake fit guns. The extra dps always helps. For soloing or small gangs the autocannon fit on an earlier post is a pretty decent one - but you can do a similar fit with rails, blasters or pulse lasers depending on where you've got skills trained.

Not sure how these T2 outfits help noobs like me & Kais tbh :/
I used this from battleclinic:
H: 2 x Standard missile 2 x 75mm Gattling Rail I (upgrade as you get more money)
M: 1 x small shield extender M51 Shield Regenerator 2 x Civilian Shield booster
L: Damage Control I (remember to get it running BEFORE taking any damage!) Magnetic Field Stabilizer I
Ammo to suit your targets. I like sabretooth missiles for most situations.
I go missiles over rockets as with a less tankable ship (frigate) it's good to pop 1 or 2 ships whilst closing range to lower their DPS.
Upgrade each slot with their better equivilent when you have the money / skills.
Enjoy the Merlin! I still have mine and use it inplace of a shuttle - for a prettier option :)
Just remember to pull back and get some shield charge back in before you hit the bottom 25% - a shield tanking Merlin in armour goes boom fast.

You want either 2x standard missiles + 2 railguns (around 20km range), or 2 rockets + 2 blasters + afterburner/mwd (1km range).
The Merlin won't have enough grid to support standard launchers AND 125mm rails, but the trick with all frigates is to train the skills that allow you to use a Micro Auxiliary Power Core I, which can add a lot of power grid to frigates. Put one of those in, and you'll be able to fit the missiles + rails.
For defense, again it's a powergrid issue (that's how CCP "balances" ships), but a trick is to use an oversized (cruiser) shield extender (Medium Shield Extender f. ex.), which adds a lot of buffer tank but makes you easier to hit by missiles (increased signature radius). Or, if you don't want that or don't have the grid for it, go for shield booster and shield hardeners.
Finally, don't forget the capacitor recharge, if you run out of juice your defenses and guns will stop. Power Diagnostics or Capacitor Power Relay in any available low slots, Cap Recharger in any available mid slot, and Small Capacitor Control Circuit rigs in the rig slots.

As we're talking about Merlins, don't ever fit cap mods, they just aren't needed. The autocannon fit I linked above is cap stable with everything running and no cap mods used. Even with 0 points into any cap-related skills it still lasts for 4 minutes. It has (almost) matching ranges on both weapon systems. Even if you do get neuted, both of your weapons systems continue to fire and since it's buffer fit, neuts wont cause your tank to collapse either.

atocannon on a merlin are bad: 1st yes you might hit at 10km but its like throwing peanuts cause you are at the very end of the falloff 2nd a 75mm rails with faction antimatter have the same damage of a 150mm AC with barrage and far better range (less tracking but at that range you hit fine anyway)
so if you wanna kite use railguns if you wanna go close up use blaster

when asking for fitting you need to state is for pvp or pve. for pve (npc's) i built this for a new alt to run tutorials and arc mission. easy to fit and skill for, and upgrade as your skills improve. setup is shown for gurista who deal kinetic and thermal dmg., change the resist amps depending on what rats you're doing.

You'l DIAF, but so should they. (assuming semi competent fleet mates) ----------- Why is it called common sense, when it's clearly very rare.
I had a mind once, but alas, I seem to have forgotten where I left it.
