Edited by: Culmen on 06/12/2010 21:42:05 Latent Ansible Gravitation(L.A.G) is a phenomenon originating from the use of faster then light communications. Under ordinary circumstances the effect is minimal, however each entangled pair actually has a latent effect on local space time.
In extreme circumstances the gravitation has been known to form something that is known as a "Space-Time Node" in which the effects begin to compound. This on it's own has minimal effect, however excessive weapons fire and ship action has been known to destabilize these "Nodes" resulting in what many capsuleers call a "Node Crash".
Preservation of causality is essential for all faster-then-light activities. But in a "node crash" situation, the entangled pairs influence space time cause such perturbation that time actually reverses erratically across a system. This time reversal is more commonly known as "Rollback" and has been reported on multiple occasions.
LAG weapons are suspected to have been deployed in several inter-alliance conflicts. But the use or research of LAG weapons has been outlawed by the Yulai Convention. Any attempt to use one is grounds for immediate revocation of the offender's pilot's license. and further more why do i even need a sig? |

Every time I hear "spatial distortion" I think of how much I want to fire those people and burn their ships.
Don't use it. It's extremely infuriating.

Get this man a medal. That is hilariously awesome.
Also, they say "spatial distortion" in order to let the RP crowd not have an aneurysm. It doesn't seem as pretty to say "Yeah, lots of pilots went there and the node lagged to ****." on a game wide news article. You think WoW uses meta game terms when they report on something?

It's pretty ridiculous to blame players for the lag. CCP's whole angle when it comes to Eve's uniqueness among MMO's is that there's only one world, and thousands of players can be in the same place at the same time. If there's no hardware that can back that up, and the software bugs out even when there's enough hardware power, then that's a case of CCP biting off more than it can chew.

As others have mentioned, the ic is required to remain in character via rp at all times. This includes both in written stories and while in-game.
Failure to rp the part and remain in-character can result in being booted from the ic. This means that anything and everything must be explained from an rp standpoint regardless of technical issues.
They are just doing their job.

So Naomi, Do you feel the message 'You cannot warp there because natural phenomena are disrupting the warp' is, as you put it rediculous? Because thats also using RP to cover game mechanics.
I feel the added layer of immersion, even if just an error message helps tremendously. There's already tons of immersion breaking things in game already, this is hardly one to complain about. |

Greetings Naomi,
The term 'spacial distortions' allows for a more interesting read than 'lag', it is a universal method of describing such events within the IC.
However, if you feel that you can bring a more appropriate word to the table, and write less 'annoying' sentences, your more than welcome to apply to the ISD IC division, we are always on the lookout for more reporters!

Nobody ever said lag is rp.
The correspondents are volunteers that are bound by numerous rules when it comes to their jobs. The main being that they are required to remain in character while writing news stories or while in-game under the ic guise.
If they are covering a story where outside technical issues caused problems, they are required to come up with an in-character way of describing it. Be it lag, or a cluster crash, or even people going link dead in the middle of a battle.
They can't simply say "lag" because that is not something that could be translated into the eve universe from an rp perspective. Blaming them for this doesn't make much sense when the sole purpose of the ic is to write news from an in-character rp standpoint. It's not all that easy to translate bugs and technical issues into something that makes sense within the boundaries of the eve universe, and yet they are required to do so for our benefit.

In regards to Culmen's impressive technobabble, let us understand just how quantum entanglement works in a communication network model.
Essentially, it has three points: Transmitter -> central data transfer system -> target.
Each ship (station, planet, pocket comm) has one half of its quantum entangled data package, which is pretty doggone small. 100 thousand quantum bits and a reader in a package about the size of a pocket phone. To make a call of 1 mile or 1 thousand light years uses the same methodology.
The sender initiates communication to a target or area of targets (wingman, fleet, local, ect). That data is fed through the quantum pool and, at the same exact moment, is read by a massive (TRULY massive, comprising an entire planetary system) relay center. In our example let's say it's Yulai. The relay center decompiles the data, determines its routing, transmits it to the requisite local halves of every quantum pool the initiator was sending to, and the data is simultaneously read by the target comms devices.
The only appreciable delay occurs at the relay system which would require its own huge quantum coupled transmitter between discreet relay locations during the period of data routing.
Now, in the situation with your massive fleet engaging in an epic battle, so much data is being pumped into a single data transfer node at the Relay that it simply cannot regurgitate it out fast enough to keep up with the flow of data. Coupled with the local Ansible instability this results in a data glut that blinds pretty much every ship in a given locale. Sensors are the first to go, then point to point comms. Without incoming sensor data ships start shutting down systems, or their local computational arrays become overwhelmed by the Relay flood and cease to operate.
Secondary slower-than-lightspeed communication methods may still work (ship-to-ship voice comms) due to relatively low complexity increasing reliability.
