2004 player here (on and off)
I had been away from the game for about 2 years until I reactivated just before Tyrannis.
Since then I've been in an NPC corp, joined a noob failcorp to try to help them, created my own corp with an RL friend purely to get my bounty tax back, and now I'm in a failalliance whose strict instructions under a wardec is to dock-up and stick a long skill in training.
Now, I may not be an uber-1337 PVPer, and my humble epeen droops in the presence of the forum PVP gods, but I can't help thinking there's more to EVE than spinning in station waiting for failalliance nubs to come online and form a lolfleet to get ganked.
I've started ganking people in lowsec out of boredom more than anything, but I'm approaching -10 far too quickly and I don't want to be stuck in low as I don't have a 2nd account to haul/carebear anymore.
I haven't been in 0.0 for about 4 years, but when I was it just felt like I was a small cog in a faceless machine, and the only time you heard from your "leaders" was when they were threatening you with expulsion from the alliance if you didn't attend a ghey mining op.
I suppose what I'm trying to say is I'm unhappy doing what I'm doing, but I don't know what I want to be doing and I don't know where I want to be doing it.
I really love the game and I don't want to go inactive again.
Any suggestions?

Well, first question:
What do you really like to do in Eve? Make ISK? Lose ISK? Blow **** up? Hunt down lone miners and laugh maniacally as they scream and rage while you violence their boats?
Once you know what part of Eve you like, you need to find a corp that does that more than it does other stuff. I think (and I think you've arrived at that conclusion yourself) that you're unhappy because you're in a corp that isn't doing much of what you enjoy doing.
Of course if what you like doing is screwing over you corpmates and stealing their stuff, that may be why. --Vel

You need to look for an alliance that isn't fail. Probably one in nullsec so you can rat up your sec status.

Tell your alliance to stop being failcats, and/or recruit a couple to go missioning/mining anyway (assumably while somebody guards with a PvP boat or a sacrificial ECM boat under a cloak).
Stick to NPC 0.0 and low-sec for entertainment, or join a high-sec alliance that gets in wars all the time. Sovereign 0.0 is kind of boring inherently, and attracts boring people. ---

Lol.
Putting the medieval theory of admission by denial aside, I am no RAZOR alt.
Is 0.0 any place for someone who can only fly sub-capitals? I was under the impression that you're nothing these days unless you can field a Dread or Carrier?

Can-flipping n00bs, suiciding autopilot haulers and ganking idiots stupid enough to aggro loot-thieves in high-sec doesn't really appeal to me.
Plus, my probing skills are non-existant and no matter how many times someone explains it to me, I still don't understand it, so I would never even find the mission runners in the first place!

Gonna give you the same reply as I give a new player.
First decide what YOU want in the game. Then start looking for people who have the same intrest and forma Corp with them or join a Corp who has the same intrest. It's not my job to make your time in EVE as pleasant as possible but to make myh own time as pleasant as possible.
If you can't muster the stamina to go for what you like to do then don't try to let others do it for you because you will end up just at the same place you started.

Hmm, sound advice I suppose.
I guess I'm after a 0.0 corp in a relatively quiet part of Blood/Sansha space that is part of an alliance that prefers small gang roams over titan blob warfare. Does such a thing exist?

The majority doesnt like blob warfare yet CCP keeps adding more content for it.
I still dont understand why gold moons were added so alliances can earn cash without work and why jump bridges were added to move their armada from one corner to the other and titans + SCs so they can kill opposing forces without actually doing the fighting.
The powerblocks sitting on the good moon goo really have the good times rolling, I remember back in 2004 alliances had to actually work to achieve something, nowadays its just falling from the sky.
Wasnt the SOV changes implemented to force large powerblocks to cut on their number of systems controlled and allow smaller alliances a chance in the 0.0 world. Look out on the map, empire is still shining bright while 0.0 is dim and the average age of characters is way above the newbie stages, so there are many people who want to goto 0.0 but the political environment and current game mechanics disallow this. Its either join the blob or be left out of the whole end game, this had to change IMO. Removing moon goo, or making it a depletable resource that needs to be reexplored could be step forward.

I think CCP's response to that was Dominion where it all got fixed, I said IT ALL GOT FIXED, except for LAG which they are working on, until you know they have to fix it again because players need to dogpile into a system with more thousands of ships cause that apparently is 'fun'. That or because it is a selling point 'be in epic battles' which is odd because ghost training was a selling point too until they ninja edited things and said it was a bug they 'lived' with for years and used to sell their game until they decided they didn't want to do that anymore.
As for now they are busy working on Incarna(WOD beta), and Dust514 links, when they figure all that out they have Evegate to get back to and PI, and more content for Incarna as well as all the other things they left out in the cold that need more content or fixing.

Until you know what you want to be doing and you know where you want to be doing it and with whom you want to be doing it, you have a serious problem.
Only you know what you like so it's up to you to sort out.

Learn how to make friends..
well.. maybe better put.. make friends in game.
0.0 is only faceless if you don't make friends with people in your corp and alliance corps talking with them nightly on ts/vent or in corp chat.
You might not be on at the same time as the leadership.. you might not be of exactly the same chemistry to talk about music , gfs , kids, your other hobbies, etc with the leaders..or in game stuff like fits, or funny kms or ccp patch changes..
so convos with them might sound top down as the do their necessary leadership role...
...but if you establish personal rapport with others.. you and the others that you do hit it off well with are what makes it intersting.
Keep friendhips in game that you make and try to strenghtihen them ... most importantly (i'd think it would go without saying) players that have the same game interests as you and .. ta-da.. you've got an interesting corp among you , that can move as a group to other corps that have the best fit for you guys to magnify your power if you don't have the play time or desire to deal with getting forums , kbs, voice servers and recruitment systems going.

Some people don't want to just make friends with any and all people they meet. He's talking about interesting corps and alliances, which i take to mean they're comprised of interesting people, not generic/average internet users. Those people bore the **** out of me, too.
There is a problem in this game, due to any successful 0.0 alliances needing thousands of people, for them to lose any personality or individuality you'd see in smaller entities.

Ummmm hello? This guy is basically saying "I want to live in wormhole space" and the best you people can recommend him is to "decide what you really want from eve"??
I don't know about the rest of you, but I'd recommend he go live in wormhole space, maybe.
Anyway, yeah buddy, it's everything you're asking for PLUS removal of local chat. I live in W-space now and find it almost impossible to return. Local chat feels like a disgusting affront to my privacy and self respect. It's like standing in a tiny lift with a dozen people yelling in your face asking if you'd like to look at their latest scam contract.
Leave the lag of blob warfare and the horrors of falling sec status behind and come join us. It's how CCP meant Eve to be, right at the start. It's how it should be.

Maybe I got lucky. I read the recruitment forums.. poked my head into a dozen corp chat rooms and followed and had convo's there... applied to a good one that fit me.
What fit me, might not fit others...of course. I found a place to land before I finished my trial period more than a year and a half ago. It was advertised as a group of working adults who put rl first but with an avid interst in the game. It advertised that it had many long time players in it ready to help new players learn the ropes . I knew it was getting war decced repeatedlyy...(which was good).
I got everything advertised first shot out.
I was tackling in T1 incursus in a week... got on some kill mails and learned the dynamics.. had a couple group pvp lessons. And built the experience and the sp over time that fed me into a similarly minded 0.0 group of mostly graduates from the other who did like 0.0. There were plenty of industrialists in both.
While half of my game time is as a trader, working independantly on alts..the 0.0 corp provides the backbone of my play.
So... TlDR.. you don't just go talk to any strangers...use the institutions that have developed in the game (forums, in gameand out, corporate histories..corporations that have survived generations of players to an extent developed a cororate culture..etc).
If you don't actively look, you won't find them though.

Um, yes, you need to know how to probe. By it's nature it's small gangs creeping up on other small gangs mostly - other than the few big guys in C6s finding themselves linked to each other and even then they can hardly really blob.
You won't find it much fun without being able to probe though.

If by leet probing skills you mean basic probing skills, then yes. In fact, you might be able to get away with NO probing skills, as most w-space corps will do it all for you and provide BMs in the corp hanger. I don't know what passive tank you're talking about. For sleepers active is best.
Think about it as nullsec but with no local chat and constantly changing exits. PvP is ALWAYS small gang, as alliances cannot exist in an organised infrastructure across wormholes, and large fleets would collapse a wormhole if they all went through at once. There is no such thing as watching local for an enemy to appear before safespotting, you have to keep an eye on your scanner. Hunting prey is not about speed as in nullsec, it's about stealth. The NPCs are very lucrative, and every 24 hours a new wormhole will open, containing an exciting and unknown adventure. Do you have some new neighbours who are ratting and waiting to be ganked? Maybe some new neighbours who are pvpers waiting to be baited? Maybe an abandoned wormhole with 30 sites to run and make billions? Maybe a hi-sec so you can go shopping to Jita? Find a w-space corp with a small group of crazy guys and have a laugh on vent while you explore all these adventures as they come. Eve as it was meant to be.

Did the old non-fail corps/alliances have open recruitment like you seem to expect now? Cause, I mean, there are non-fail corps and alliances around, it's just harder than hell to get into them. Definitely takes a bit of effort on your part to try to find them and join. Like, they're not gonna come to you. They don't even know who the **** you are or that you exist.

+1 W-Space, though you will need to find a home with a good balance of options. Static k-space and you're talking more of having a random low/null to strike in, static c1-c3 and you can solo the anoms cheaply, static c4-6 and you're at risk of larger hostile gangs + cap ships near their home and not being able to close/control connecting holes without a few corpmates regularly on. You will want to be able to probe and possibly have an (offline) launcher fitted just in case, but yeah corps should be sharing the scanning work and bookmarks easily. You might have to take a bit of a backup.bait role for pew if you aren't scouting in something cloaky with probes though. |

When I started I played around different corps, was in new corps, fail alliances, small corps in big alliances who nobody bothered to consult or inform what the hell is going on, I've pirated solo and tried living in wormhole space. Eventually I cast my anchor in a 0.0 corp that lives in NPC region corp. Most players in the corp are alike myself - we have independent means of making money and don't need to hold territory and refuel POSes to do it in 0.0 space and we enjoy pvping in small groups where each pilot counts. We don't hold a lot of blues (just one other small corp in the area that does blackops work) so we have plenty of people to shoot at. We don't go negative because it is 0.0. If region goes quiet then we focus more on making ISK, do wormholess, running plexes, get on the test server to play around with setups. Several of us have capital ships and we don't live too deep into 0.0 space, so delivering ships and equipment is not a problem either. Most of us are old players competent in pvp. Occasionally we open recruitment and take on new guys to train. We keep out numbers low since we are not interested in intergalactic conquests only having some fun while pvping. There are several corps like mine that make their living in NPC 0.0 regions or lowsec and that have been around for a long time. May be you should look for something like this.
Another good corp was a wormhole corp, but while I really liked the people there the primary aim in wormholes is making ISK and I was already rich from previous enterprises. I had too much bloodthirst in me to stay with them, so ended joining a corp with much heavier pvp focus.

OP- Your issue is that you don't vet your corps well enough. I speak as the ceo/recruiter for my corp so I have experience in this. I vet my applicants to make sure they would make for good corpries and I encourage them to do the same for me. Because of this, I have high retention rates.
Once you figure out what you want, you simply ask questions to corps that might suit you. The problem with many applicants is they take a recruiter's word as gospel and buy into a sales pitch. That's especially true of the nullsec corps/alliances. Everyone thinks nullsec is the end all/be all and it really isn't. Don't be a sheep and get into the herd mentality like others. -----------------
