I have refining V and refinery efficiency IV. I get 100% yield at a normal station refinery as long as I have the relevant ore processing skill at least to level II or so. I only need any particular processing skill at IV to use the tech II mining crystals. I do need refinery efficiency V to learn scrapmetal processing. But otherwise, there seems to be no purpose whatsoever to have the ore processing skills at V (aside from getting the certificate). I hear that reaching max yield at a POS refinery takes approximately the same skills, and never requires the relevant ore processing skill to be at level V. Am I missing something?

Industrials were originally supposed to refine ore with a fitted module. It had such low efficiency that to truly master it required max skills.

If you are in Empire space I don't believe there is - 50% refine stations are plentiful enough. In 0.0 outposts have lower refine rates so you want better skills.

Level 5 refining skills only do any good on some 30% stations or on a POS (meh).

Scrapmetal processing is a useful one to have if you do missions or rat a lot. Gives you the ability to get the most out of refining alloys and npc loot.

Indeed, in 50% base NPC stations you need Refinery Efficiency V and Scrap-metal Processing at I to fully reduce the lost waste from reprocessing those alloys and NPC loot. These skills do not effect the 6.67 standing you need with the corp to max out the standings part of the refine.

Am intensive refining array is capped at 75% regardless of skill. So the best you can do at a POS is to lose 25% of your minerals.

Biggest one you should get to V is Refinery Efficiency. This isn't necessarily for the extra % yield, but for the skills that depend on it.
All of the high level ores and scrap metal require this. Now if you don't mind the small (2.5% loss for reprocessing) and don't expect to mine/refine any of the top end ore then don't bother, but I would do Refinery Efficiency V and then IV in the ore types so you can use tech 2 crystals.

given the time investment...I stopped at 4 to get t2 crystals on the miner.
You'd be better off getting your preferred station(a) corp(s) standing high to bypass the 5% tax imo. Less than a month of grind depending on how motivated to run missions. Get you 5% across the board more...about the same time jsut 1 refine 5 would.
If you got the isk, refine implant as well.
