So whats the deal that I read everywhere that a zealot is absolutely useless except as a fleet fight long range sniper. What would be the matter with disruptor/web maybe even tracking enhancer in lows with t2 pulses for more typical close range engagement ie. jumping into a camp in losec
The only thing I see for sniper role is falloff bonus but so what wouldnt that work just as well for short range higher tracking turrets/crystals?
That being asked, also whats a good solo amarr pwnmobile BC and under, non-t2 hull, for just wandering losec and going down in blaze of glory taking on anything thats camping a gate The main thing I dont like is no amarr ships bc and under have any tracking bonuses, and few have midslots for scriptable tracking computers

The usual argument is that the Harbinger does the "brawling" better at a cheaper price than the zealot.

The Omen Navy Issue is the reason short-range Zealots are useless, due to a drone bay and a better layout of bonuses/slots for short-range combat.
The Harbinger is popular as both a gang and solo ship when fitted in typical Amarr fashion.
If you want a laser ship with a tracking bonus and are not concerned about cost, the Phantasm has a significant tracking bonus, as well as generous midslots typically used in shield tanking. ---------

It has a similar sized tank, a 25m2 Drone bay, a 7.5 RoF Bonus(With the Drone bay DPS is near the same) and an extra highslot for an Energy Neutralizer. All of these things point to it as a better close range brawler while the Zealots main advantage is it's Resists for RR and Range making it a better fleet ship.
It is basically a Zealot with everything a Zealot lack to solo.
Edit: IKG by one minute
-- I can not decide on a sig yet.

Say you did this, and you happen to get a Rifter or two on you. What exactly can you do about that? Your guns won't track, you have no drones or neuts. This is why the Zealot is a pretty horrible solo ship. Also once you're inside web range your main advantage (mobility) is gone.
As the others have said, Harbinger does close range better and cheaper, wheras if you must use a cruiser hull the Phantasm and Omen Navy Issue are both better options as they're more versatile. _________________________________

It's worth pointing out that while in a typical EHP/DPS slugfest the Harbinger smashes the Zealot all over, the Zealot is smaller and faster and has T2 resists which make it popular in AHAC gangs. Also, the range bonus is pretty useful with pulse as the difference between 23km range and 35-40km range is significant. ________________

Zealot does damage, nothing more - nothing less. It just does it so damn well that the rest of eve are green as Kermit with envy. It lacks the slots and fittings to do anything else though .. very focused ship .. like all Carthum hulls really.
N.Omen and Harbinger both bring drones to the table which is a huge boon in this day and age as is their slot layouts (+1 mid for Harb, +1 high for Nomen). Both points are extremely valuable if the aim is to solo .. Zealot for all its power just cannot compete there.
Both Nomen and Zealot can get ~50k EHP which with their lower signatures is eminently suited for close range brawls (Destroyer signature with T3 booster ), which is the basis for the Zeal+Guard swarm stratagem.
Pet Peeve: Amarr needs/wants/craves a gatling laser for medium and large gun sizes. They seriously lack the high-tracking/low-damage/short-range option available to the other gun users.

This fit is alot of fun in smaller gangs, Scorch has a 50km optimal range at some 500 DPS. Also close range AB Armor Zealots with guardian support are extremely popular in nullsec.
