Hello
I'd like you to tell you a little story...
Once upon a time a frigate clicked "dock" and initiated warp to a station in low sec. The frigate landed and saw a war target Loki. The frigate instantly exploded in a tiny poof of rage.
Please don't give me all the tired 'your tears' stuff. This hasn't even happened to me. It just strikes me as a poor game mechanic that allows people to grief with very little chance of comeback.
Make docking invulnerable or nerf insta locks.

Let me get this story straight...
You were in Lowsec, and you warped DIRECTLY to the station without first flying to a safespot nearby and use the directional scanner to verify it being clear to dock?

No seems the OP was in High Sec because War Target.
Then elected to warp from the stargate like the 30bil Kestrel, instead of warping to a Planet that has a angle of approach not not covered by the attackers IE not near undock point.

Edited by: Belle Tristesse on 12/12/2010 19:54:12 Are you honestly telling me you warp to a planet/off grid every time you dock at a station? WTF? How patient/over cautious are you? Do you manage to get any pvp in in between your ocd planet warping?
Can you give me a decent reason for this mechanic to exist? What makes it so terrible is that there is basically no sensible comeback to it bar a BO drop. You can basically sit there and pop stuff in absolute safety.
To clarify, I have no massive problem with it on gates or even at undock. But landing and then dying instantly is really very tedious indeed.

You cannot use warp disruption bubbles in hisec and lowsec, so this is needed to catch frigates and other fast-aligning ships.

I thought the point of hisec and lowsec was that solo combat was a viable enterprise.

lol, op fails.
Once you drop out of warp, you are invulnerable for a full 10 seconds if you don't do anything. Furthermore, if you make station instadock and instawarp bookmarks, you can safely get in and out of a station no matter how many WTs are camping said station.
Also, if you hit Ctrl+Space (Stop Ship) after undocking, you will be invulnerable for the full extent of your session timer, giving you plenty of time to safely assess the situation before deciding what to do.

Trusting some automated things usually ends badly.
Many times when you warp to station you will land out of docking range and then automated docking procedure approach station and dock. That approach part is time when enemy can kill you.
If you use bookmark that is middle of docking range and warp to that spot and spam docking while landing you may save your ship or pod. Even this does not work 100% of time if you have some laggg issues or something.
Best thing is avoid stations where enemy is camping, because everytime something can go wrong.

Are you sure this is absolutely correct? So if I don't spam dock nothing can lock me?

And yet I am not whining on the Forums.
And no I do not, but if I am in High Sec and there is a War Target in the System I will scout out the station with the D-Scan. If it is cluttered then I will warp to max distance and have a look. I would rather take the timethen loose a ship.
Same tactic if alone in Lo or Null and the is a non Blue in the system, check the D-Scan at short Range near the Station before warping in. To we 30 seconds of time to ensure I am not *****ing on the forum for CCP to coddle me is worth it.

If you can't be asked to check a low-sec station undock when flying in something fragile AND when you see unfriendlies in system, then EVE is not the game you are looking for...

This is false. You may be getting confused by the time that you can see a ship on-grid but cannot lock it as it is still decelerating from warp. There is no "10 second post-warp invulnerability" in the way that you describe it.

IMO, this isn't so much an issue of mechanics as it is of simply being clear. For the PvP uninitiated, when you click dock you expect to instantly dock when you come out of warp. There is no warning, no way to learn just what can go wrong (besides the hard way, of course).
Stupid? Yes, but such is Eve.

I was killed by an 'instalocking' Loki my Ares while attempting to dock just earlier. I think its a bit of a cheap gank when I'd hit dock on the station to initiate warp, but I'm confident that if the pilot does it regularly enough (he's not going to stop while he gets cheap ganks now is he?) someone will come along with a sebo'd arazu or something clever and then laugh with his mates at the easy Loki kill.
My guess is he will kill less value in ships than his ship is worth when it dies so its all good pew pew karma. 'Instalocking' (never was an eve word a worse fallacy with client server delay) is fine.

OK. Well if that's the general consensus on it then I guess it's fine. I am in no way the whining noob some of you evidently think btw. I just happen to think that this kind of play is the height of ***gotry. If people can think of a viable counter to it I might change my mind....

If you are at war or are in lowsec, set a warp point that always lands you at zero to the station so you instantly dock and he cannot lock you. Simple as that. It could just be that the purpose of your life is to server as a warning to others. |

Just to clarify this statement ... :)
There is no invulnerability after warping ...
However, it is completely SAFE to hit CNTRL-SPACE at undock ... this will STOP your ship usually inside the docking perimeter. WAIT out your undock timer (about 30s) and then redock before the bad guys are allowed to lock you. IF you try to redock too soon, or execute ANY other action you will lose your invulnerability and will NOT be able to redock until the timer runs out. (And will be happily shot up by the pirates waiting outside).
So ... when undocking with possible hostiles in system. 1) Undock 2) If hostiles are near undock - hit cntrl-space to stop. Otherwise warp to an instant exit bookmark (hopefully you made one earlier right?) You can also try warping to the instant bookmark but a fast locking ship might remotely catch you if it is timed correctly ... also warping doesn't work if the undock is bubbled so redocking is your only option.) 3) Wait out the undock timer ... hoping you don't get bumped (not sure if you can be bumped while invulnerable ... I suspect not since the ship models pass through each other at undock but I don't know). 4) redock
Why does it work this way? ... because there is no way to look out a window on the station and see a local overview.

the prob isn't fast lockers, it's the 'setting course to docking perimeter..' after you come out of warp. you're targetable, and many ppl lose ships and pods while you crawl the last few km to docking radius, while (optionally) bashing the dock button and screaming 'dock goddammit dock!!'.
make bm in the station superstructure, at 0 to the station.
from warpable point in space to the station, click on the station. dock option comes up on selected items box.
hit your station bookmark. before the dock option disappears, click dock button, in selected items box.
you will come out of warp at 0 to the station, and dock.

Unless there is a dicter bubble already there when you undock... Then you are screwed.

Yup, buying a very expensive T3 Ship and spending time tweaking the fit to fill a very specific role does sound like a terrible thing to do. Cookie cutter T1 fits for all!
Seriously though, ive been on the fiery death end of seboed ships before. Their scissors cut my paper. And Pod. Legitimate tactic, props to the loki pilot.
Now neutral reps are ****, that was just a good Setup.
Cmon....A WT in local and he warped straight to a station? Lifes hard, EvE is harder, HTFU or GTFO

Guess what? You can suck my balls. I should elucidate. How about you read and respond to the criticisms outlined? An aligned instalocking Loki is basically invulnerable in low sec. This is not really kosha is it? To reiterate I actually haven't lost a ship/pod/sleepless night to this tactic. I just think it's gay.
Thanks to those who explained docking mechanics. That's very helpful of you. It also shows how many of the people screaming "omfg noob!" are just plain wrong. More flames pls.
