Bah, considering that it is less than 12 months from release and they haven't even posted screenshots or gameplay vids, it's probably going to use the dated Oblivion engine.
It's sad to see a once innovative developer releasing poor excuses for new games that are little more than content updates / DLCs (see Fallout: New Vegas).

The trailer sucked, especially compared to ME3, and oblivion is overrated. There, I said it. Not that it was a bad game, but it wasn't that particularly great either.
If they can make ES5 feel more "alive" and like an actual world with dungeons that aren't more tedious than fun I'd be interested though.

Alternatively screw Elder Scrolls V, yay ME 3
Mass Effects keep gettin better and Elder Scrolls keep gettin worse.
Though I hope I'm wrong because I loved Morrowind and hope ES V blows everyone away, but being honest we all know it wont. -----------------

Gonna get both, but i do hope that Skyrim doesn't rely on Gamebryo yet again. Oblivion already was a throwback, let alone Fallout.

I disagree. tes 3 and before were fantastic, had tons of backstory, were rather immersive, etc.
tes 4 had voice. Ew. Bye immersion. No unique speech from each person. Combat become meh. levelled dungeons etc.. Need i say more?
me1 vs me2.. well, my stance on that is pretty clear in the me3 thread.
Basically, moderately interested in both of them, yet at the same time not overly exited.

But you still agree ES 3 was better than 4 so chances are 5 will be more of the same.

I just hope the new Elder Scrolls installment is better than the puke fest oblivion was.
Daggerfall and Morrowind were simply astonishing, Oblivion was honestly pretty MEDIOCRE.
If they simply make it another console game portable to the PC they will probably go the same way as Oblivion, and despite Oblivion being huge, they simply didnt quite follow through the spirit of earlier incarnations. I can't simply put it, but Oblivion felt hollow.
Never been a fan of Mass Effect as Sci Fi is not my forte, but I can pretty much say ME3 will be better if they just keep the same direction they took in Oblivion ---

than either of ME2 or ES5...

Bethesda produce **** games. Sorry. I still play them but they are so dumbed down and generic it hurts when I pee.
Elder scrolls is fun but only for about 15 minutes. Until you realise every dialogue tree ends with the same single 'operator', every quest has only two possible outcomes: you are good and win, you are bad and fail etc etc etc.
No. Oblivion was a terrible game. Sorry it was. It looked great but there's loads of posts on loads of forums highlighting its many, many flaws. The biggest single one being: its far too low brow and PC. The second biggest being: nothing you do matters.
New Vegas was fun because it was slightly less suffocating - there was at least a pretence of choice and causality.
As for the gamebyro engine getting another outing, no biggie. Its the content that makes a sandbox. Its more than pretty enough. Really. I'll repeat: its the content that makes a sandbox.

TeS V is using a completely new engine... so that's a relief at least.
I just hope it's as moddable as the previous engine, Oblivion became something so much more when you packed it with 100 or so mods

This. It's all about the content. Also there probably isn't much point in creating a new engine, after all it has to run on the same hardware as the last one. Because PC games don't sell enough to justify PC exclusives any more, we'll have to wait for the next generation of consoles. And when that happens the price of developing a game will probably jump, leading to even more generic boring games as the developer will be too scared to try something new.
And I'll second oblivion being terrible, I tried playing many times and just gave up though boredom.

I could not stand playing Oblivion. Morrowind was decent though. Haven't played much of that one ether though. I am replaying both Mass Effects back to back. Slowly. In small doses. ME2 gameplay somewhat annoyed me at first, but I got used to it, reluctantly. I am certainly NOT looking forward to Skyrim. _

Oblivion just like fallout 3 only became fun to play once there were a crapton of player made mods out for it. As released both games stunk badly.

This is already pretty late in the development, so is there any word on whether they will cut all the bad design decisions that were in Oblivion? If they release this game with a leveling system like the last I won't pick it up no matter how easy it is to mod.

I hope they use the iD 4 engine now zenimax has bought they out as the gamebryo engine is a bag of sweaty nads.
Yeah, content is great and all, but I like pretty things when I'm enjoying it instead of hideous, unrealistic engine flaws that destroy the immersion.
I'll probably get both when they release a GOTY/Gold edition, can't be bothered paying over the odds for game and DLC.

Oblivion was one of the greatest games I've ever played. I enjoyed Daggerfall too. Never got round to playing Morrowind.
I noticed a worrying trend with elder scrolls though, where each successive game is despised by those who enjoyed the last.

TES V is using a new game engine so STFU, oblvion was one of the best games to be released in the past decade Fallout 3 AND new vegas were both great games, so STFU
Mass effect, though a great story, is over rated. mediocre in combat, voice acting, the "5" magic choices are pretty lame also, combat got better in ME2, but took out a lot of upgrades. will i get ME3? yes it will be fun, I'll beat it in 1-3 days and say how awesome the story was, will i get TES V? yes it will be fun I'll beat it in 1-4 months and say how awesome the entire game was.

Edited by: Deviana Sevidon on 14/12/2010 02:07:05 Oblivion was too much dumbed down for the average console hero.
From the instant-travel option to the limited dialogue choices to the automatic scaling of monster level. Everything was far too simplified. In Morrowind it meant something if a player was able to obtain a full set of the ultra rare daedric armor. In oblivion and because of the level-scaling even the average cave bandit was equiped with Glass, Ebony and Daedric. From the multiple factions a player could join in Morrowind only a handful remained and so on.
If Skyrim will be more of a successor of Morrowind I might take a look. If it will be a successor of Oblivion I will pass.

Thats just called getting older. We all get bitter and spiteful of each more naive, more gooey eyed cretinous generation of clueless consumer-*****s that follows us.
The fact they really do seem to be getting more clueless and more cretinous just makes it worse.

You really missed something then, Morrowind was certainly one of the best RPGs ever made and compared to Oblivion and what followed, the engine was groundbreaking as well.

Not true if you go back as far as Daggerfall, Morrowind was widely seen as far superior. Also, Fallout 3 was better received than Oblivion.

There are great engines out there, look at Source for example and what dozens of good games have done with it.
As for the content: you can have great content and a pitiful engine like Dragon Age: Origins for example. Its story and characters are far more interesting than Oblivion's, but I can't get myself to play because it has such a horrible graphics engine and UI. As far as Bethesda is concerned - Fallout 3 showed some good content variations, but Oblivion was just plain boring with every dungeon looking like 20 others.
Perhaps the much-hyped Witcher 2 will have a decent engine and story, although it does seem to try very hard to be "adult" (i.e. for 13 year old males) ...

I liked the story of ME and ME2, but i really hated how ME was as buggy as hell on the PC, way below the quality of other Bioware games :(
I guess i should put more effort in and finish ME2? Your signature is too large. Spitfire
