Edited by: Joshua Foiritain on 16/01/2005 14:46:49 I as killing some Serpentis today and in the background i notoiced some chatter. Upon zooming in on the Serpentis pirates i could hear radio traffic.
Has this been around for long? Ive never notoiced it before
Its pretty damn coolio though ---------------------------

Been around since forever, afaik.
Used to be pretty spooky at first and still could be if sounds actually worked properly.

I know it right? The first time I zoomed in to take a closer look at the drone I almost ran away in terror... I was thinking of recording the sounds that some of the rats and drones make to see if I could decipher anything intelligible from them. It would be cool if you could hear those sounds even from your own ship, at least periodically or maybe farther away than right on top of them. ---------------

If you read the EVE backstory you will see that this is NOT radio chatter or ship sounds. It is an artificial sound created by your POD to help you use your 4th sense (hearing) to help discern where your enemies are and what type of enemy it is. If you pay attention every single ship has a different sound. This was technology built in by the Jovians because they found that a human has better Environmental Awareness when he is using as many of his senses as possible. Remember, there are no sounds in space, and there is no way you could audibly hear a radio wave.

Well how come your ship can be on fire, if there is no oxygen in space? You could hear a radio wave in space...just recieve the signals. No oxygen = no sound waves. Yea, but you are mostly right. --

Lemme get into my Jovian Capsule so i can warp to another solar system and ask my friends who are on other side of the universe to double check that...
News Flash: Eve = Game = Anything is possible. I doubt the noise would actually be generated by the pod. Its more logical to assume it simply listens into their com channels. ---------------------------

WTF, EVE has sound? I never heared any sound. Probably because i stop sound instantly after logging in, because of the pure lag sound cause on my PC during combat.
But nice to know. _____________________________________ Dead or Alive

the same way the sun burns =) two types of fire i know can burn in space theoreticly is plasma fires and natrually thermo nuclear fusion[or is it fission?] (eg: a star) ----------------- *Decloaks and starts blasting your sig* Applesauce Biotch

Fire can burn in space perfectly well if the oxidising agent is provided by what is burning. Hence why rockets used in space have liquid oxygen as part of their fuel load. So if your ship is on fire, that'll be the oxygen leaking out of a tank or something and fuelling something else burning.
And sound (compression waves) can travel in any medium, not just air. Maybe EVE "space" is not a vacuum, and that would explain the transmission of sound through it, as well as explain why all the ships have a maximum speed in "space" due to the friction.
Hang on, this is a game? Oh, sorry... :) -- There is no SoonÖ |

It would be hilerious if EvE followed just some real physics. Like the absence of friction in vacuum. Could be cool to reach 0,125 AU/s without using warp. =D
*cough*lightspeed*cough*
In other news, God has resigned his position as Almighty after often repeated shows of defience against his estabilished Rules of Physics by his Creations.
And to - god forbid - stay on topic, I will try and actually turn on the hellish thing called sound in EvE next time I get into combat.

Sound is broken sorta in EVE atm, you need to relog to have it work at the level you set it at, or else it will just play full blast. -----------------

Yes, but they cannot be heard, because they are not sound.
Sound is the action of a vibration pushing air. And since there is no air, there is no sound. The vibration can exist, but there is no medium through which it can be projected.
Radio signals, on the other hand, are electromagnetic radiation of specific wavelengths ( roughly 1 MHz - 10 MHz for AM, 100 MHz - 1 GHz for FM and UHF, but there are others ). They cannot be "heard", although it is theoretically possible for organisms to evolve to a state where they can be percieved in the same way visible light is percieved, as they are merely different parts of the same EM spectrum (visible light is emitted at roughly 10^12 THz).

Yeah your easrs cannot pickup radio waves. but there is this lovely T2 equipment called a Raido reciver that in turn makeds them become sound!

What do you mean lack of friction in space? I'm pretty sure that while its low there is still some friction in space

There are trace gases, but they are not sufficient to transmit sound we could actually hear.

Ooh science... Love it. Hers a good question then, if u jet a can too close too a planet, its not anchored in anyway so y does it not start drifting towards it? wouldnt it b fun to have moving cans, maybee if a ship or missile exploded too close to a can it would start traveling away, it would make u more carfull about wat u do as chasing a can in ur bs could b a pain. or or, blast past empire minners cans to send em flying, thatle give there haulers a nighmare, id b doing that all the time Nice link btw, musical blackholes, maybee god has a row of em lined up sumwere so he can play a little tune wen he`s bored of creating stuff
