How does it benefit you? I am not bothered, I am just curious why one would feel the need to create an alt for the sake of posting
Unless you are creating a **** load of alts for the sake of replying to your thread

besides sockpuppets which are extremely effective, you can use trolling alts to troll without risking your account.

I use my forum alt to ask questions which may require answers with sensitive or other information which my main or other alts would not like the competition to know about. I don't troll much. Questions including things about game mechanics or otherwise. I find there are some real gems of information to be found IF you dont getting your hands or eyes dirty sifting through everyone else's ****piles

To be an *******, to say things you don't want associated with your main or other income generating characters, to not deal with people who look at the forums casually, regularly or by happenstance to find people to **** with, etc.
To simply create a character as a forum alt is really a waste of a character slot unless you suicide, troll massively (probably to the point of getting banned), or otherwise find use in continually biomassing a character. Biomassing is related because you need a free character slot to 'create a forum alt' unless you keep 2 character slots 'disposable' then one can be your forum troll and the other your suicider/point 'man'.
To use an 'alt' to post is also related and the benefits somewhat coincide with those of a pure 'forum alt' created just to post in that you can keep what you say away from your ingame activities. Not every character is equipped with the skills or assets to constantly be 'on guard' to deal with forum ******* griefers, and not everyone is 'safe' in null, WH, etc surrounded by their buddies/same 'old' enemies.
TLDR: Anonymity

Same reason as people posting online with aliases.

Had two extra character slots and no plans to train any skills on more characters. Why not dream up some name to post with?
Felt safer a few times when i talked extensively about goonfleet in less than savory terms. But for the most part i'm not trying to 'hide' at all. I rarely log in anymore anyway.

I'm actually considering posting on my main just because it might make the game interesting if people try to kill or stalk me. But i think i'm giving myself too much credit, or being paranoid, people probably don't really care that much. So on with the silly alt. For now.

As the forums are an important and enjoyable aspect of the game to me and as I almost exclusively post via this philosopher king / tranding magnet persona, I don't really consider this an "alt"...
... yet he is a lowly skilled character relative to others that i have, ... and he(I) does less trading than the others (hence has time to spend on the forums on "big picture" items)
But , why not use my 27 million sp PVP character instead of this 1.6 million sp character?
...because the Pvp character is a member of a player corporation and any poor spelling or wild ideas made to incite discussion or to play devils advocate, migth be associated with those other players who really don't deserve the connection and might not be helped by it.
Annonomity promotes a broader expression of ideas, imo. I do realize that anonimity at the same time increase the crap you might hear 5 fold.... and more rudeness etc... but I have very thick skin for that and I can sift signal to noise quickly.
I'd much prefer to hear 120 points with only 20 of them half-way rational instead of 15 of them with 10 rational
The second situation give me twice the new ideas, and some of those ideas also would tend to be the most interesting.. those that fly against conventional wisdom or border upon offending someone despite having a large possiblity of truth.
I also appreaciate hearing someont give a detailed report of their reasoning and if you're the type that also likes that you've read this sentence.. if not you've skipped on without harm.

I post with an alt half the time because CCP doesn't have a clue on how to make forums. Hopefully the new ones will work better. You shouldn't have a choice of what character to post with. You should be required to post with your oldest character. Default is alphabetical for some stupid reason. Unfortunately my settings reset on the forums every time I log off because I delete cookies so setting my main as my default is pointless.
Either way...most people post with alts because they are cowards.

You are right, but not only for self-esteem people using alts. They use them for influence as well. Resent events with learning skills could explain it. Bunch of inpatient players in amount between 2-3 (Not to mention fact that only minority reads forums at all) persons of RL were using their army of alts to make view like most of community want rid of learning skills and they succeeded.
Now everybody must accept that fact - we have no more learning skills.

Anonymity. Responsibility.
1) by posting knowledge in certain parts of the forums people can judge someone's potential for either being a target or opponent.
2) by posting controversial stuff you could get into the cross-hair of some people, together with your buddies. As I don't want them to be dragged into stuff they have no part in I'd rather keep them out of it.
I do troll sometimes. If that's not ok with people they should be able to block me in the new forums.. on the other hand I think most of my posts are good enough, so that 'Tres Farmer' himself is a name that's not being associated with spam/troll/****head/moron/etc. Might be useful to have a counter how many people have you blocked (not who, just how often). support Public Idea Tracker | 24hr PLEX |

I think there would be more concern for industrial espionage/damage by other companies than this simple kind of thing (like posting competitor products or dooming eve because of xy).
CCP has got account information and unless you use different email addresses AND IP's for your accounts ALL THE TIME they should have a pretty good picture if there is any influencing by players going on. Besides if CCP doesn't want something they have the option to run the influencing themselfes with forum-alts AND/OR just ignore the screaming. As I consider people on both sides of the fence equally dedicated I would assume the efforts will even out in the end and you get alt supported stuff for such controversial stuff as learning skills on both sides. It's like companies paying both democrats and republicans equally. support Public Idea Tracker | 24hr PLEX |

Alts are also useful for posting "OMG price of X is spiking, why?" threads when your main is busy trying to push the price of X sky-high.
Alts can make it easier to ask questions without tipping off your future prey, competitors or followers.
