I nominate Chribba for this task, he already made that picture composed of thousands of portraits.

Since it's currently stored at CCP I was hoping they would make it then put up a website with all our portraits with a nice search function.

Edited by: Kalle Demos on 08/01/2011 06:46:38 They can burn this chars portrait for all I care, out of all the chars I have this ones portrait went horribly wrong and I for one will be glad I wont see it again, my alts on the other hand will be missed
Didnt Chribba do something like this a while back anyway? But for posters (in game channels too)

You can grab your own picture by typing
http://image.eveonline.com/Character/<Character_ID>_<Picture_Size>.jpg as explained Here. To get your own character ID, you would go to http://api.eve-online.com/eve/CharacterID.xml.aspx?names=<Character_Name> and the XML document will give you a character ID as the characterID attribute of the row element.
To do this for the entire Character set of Eve online, One could write a bot which would request every possible character image, and every possible ID and match them up some kind of way. That sounds like work.
Quick Question? Is there a way to get every actual character ID without having to blindly request every number between 1 and 9999999999?

Another quick question, what is the minimum and maximum possible character ID? If I knew that I could probably figure out how to extract all the current pictures.

Is there a way to easily search through them? Or make them searchable?

Or you could just do capture portrait on every char you see, then just go find the pic in your eve cache.

I assume CCP will replace them in the same feed, so are you planning on saving the cache or just updating them as the feed updates?

Actually it's between 0 and 2147483647. Which is 32 bit signed positive numbers.
That comes to 2147483647/(7*24*60*60) = 3550 requests each second from about now and until release of incursion update 3. That is a dos attack which is illegal in most countries and will most likely get you banned. Even if you only ask for the header to check if it is a real portrait or the ghost image.
So we must get some info from CCP. Either the whole dump of images or a list of user ids to fetch portraits for.
I have sent a petition to CCP asking them if the can provide something for this.
Chribba if CCP is not willing to help are you willing to provide the char images you got? I would be prepared to host and build a service that have the old portraits.

Yes, that would be me! The character portrait preservation project is in full swing. The images are already rendered and we are planning to put them into an image.eveonline.com-style image database and make it publicly available asap. Size will be 256x256 tho so if you want to have a hires version of your characters, saving it from the current client is still the way to go. Expect a short devblog on this topic in the near future.

Capturing the portrait within the client is cropped smaller compared to the shown portrait. Top of my head is sliced off. And maybe the zoomed portrait reveals the shortcomings a bit too clearly as I strongly favor the smaller picture shown ingame. |

Okay Everybody. I've decided not to run a script that would grab every character picture, because that would get me banned from the API, and CCP Purple Tentacle is on the case with a proper picture preservation project.
I wasn't about to let bad code go to waste though. I have taken the Python code and written a thingy that will grab pictures of all sizes, provided that you have a python interpreter and a list of characters. It can be downloaded Here. Let me know what you think, I read this thread, and I read Eve Mail.

While you are at it, could you also please write an algorithm that makes the new character creator use our old face by default pretty please
And also if at all possible, could you maybe like make a torrent or an archive of sorts with all the images for us to download?

I started looking at those nice directions on how to get the portrait by api but sense i mistype every third letter thos long externsions take me like three dozen trys puching carefully key by key.
then I realized you could just right click on a portrait here in the forums and do a "save picture" exactly where you wanted it.
If you want bigger than the thumb nail, post, then sign out then click on your portrait by your post and you'll get the bigger portrait with the last ten posts you made and do the right click save thing there.

And if it's not too much trouble, can you rip out the old character creator and save it as a standalone program for nostalgias sake?

I have been working on my CharacterPictureSaver. The python source code is still available Click here for Python Files. I was able to create a .exe version, which works on my windows machines anyway. So if you don't have Python and don't want Python, you can Click Here for .exe.

My little service that uses the old char database:

It's early days yet so there may be bugs and the layout will get better.
