I know it'd be a gimp fit but this is more proof of concept than anything.
"Sniping" with sentry drones is only really viable at around 130km or so. Past that things start going bad fast.
Heigh Ping wrote:This is not accurate. Your drone control range in the range your drones will engage from YOU, Your lock range is the range to which you can lock a target, and the drone optimal and falloff are self explanatory. The drones will engage out to the control range from YOU, even if it exceeds your lock range provided they are assigned to someone who can lock and engage the target. E.g. If your drone control range is 100km, and your target range is 50km, assign your sentries to a fleetmate who is 50km from you. That fleetmate then engages a target 25km out from him (75km from you). The target is within the drone control range (<100km from you) but beyond your lock range (>50km). The sentries will engage.
On the flip side of this, the drone control range is the range from YOU to the target. Not the drone to the target. If your drone control range is 50km, you could leave your sentries behind and fly out to within 50km of a target, and the drones will engage not matter how far from the target the sentries are. (Of course, optimal and falloff will determine if they actually hit anything).
Well said, I was going to make the same point myself. This is one of those quirks that crops up when you use the same mechanics for different aspects of a game that don't work quite the same way. "Drone control range" for mobile combat drones works just fine, but it's a total wash for sentry drones. If your sentries are inside your control range and the target is outside you can't direct them to attack it, but if your sentries are outside of your control range and the target is inside of it you can direct them to attack it.
Kind of puts lie to the whole "drone control" aspect of it when it works like that, no? Still, it makes for an interesting topic of conversation in noob corporations when you explain it to the new(er) players. |
