I'm wondering if it is possible to fit enough tracking links and drone link augmentators to get sentry drones, such as wardens or bouncers to hit out past 150KM or more.
I know it'd be a gimp fit but this is more proof of concept than anything. |

That'd be kinda useless in PvP, with ninja scan mechanics.

Sure. Take a drone boat (the Dominix could do it), add 4 or so Omnilinks, 5 or so DLAs, and SeBos/Signal Amps until you can target the thing.
Total gimmick, though. |

Total gimmick, though. why bother with the sebo's? Just fit omni's and armor tank the lows, assign drones to an actual sniper ship. Take comfort in the fact that you are now an AFK sniper.
And then die because sniping at those ranges is silly and foolish.

Because drone control range is the maximum distance that Sentry drones will engage a target.
If your lock range is smaller than your drone control range, your drone control range is reduced to your lock range. Hence, Sebos with locking range scripts. |

I'm not sure how useful it would be in PVP, but in PVE it's perfectly doable, especially with Wardens (huge Optimal). |

The ishtar with some bouncers without any drone mods can lock and shoot to 75k, with drone mods can snipe alot further out. But for me its just a nice to have, than a try to do.
Killed many dictors and such before they got back to gate or burned for me with bouncers, ive never tried just sniping with sentrys i think it would become tedious with the release and rescooping you would have to do. http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/4375/mynewsig2.jpg |

See a solo frigate trolling your station at 70-100km? Undock a sentry vexor with sebos and drone mods, he'll go "lol vexor" and then gets nuked by your sentries. Amat victoria curam. |

I had lots of fun in RvB with a DCU-tanked sentry nano "snipe" Vex. Yeah, you need to be quick with scooping, warping and redeploying, but it pumps a lot of damage at range for a cruiser and is fun to fly.

This is not accurate. Your drone control range in the range your drones will engage from YOU, Your lock range is the range to which you can lock a target, and the drone optimal and falloff are self explanatory. The drones will engage out to the control range from YOU, even if it exceeds your lock range provided they are assigned to someone who can lock and engage the target. E.g. If your drone control range is 100km, and your target range is 50km, assign your sentries to a fleetmate who is 50km from you. That fleetmate then engages a target 25km out from him (75km from you). The target is within the drone control range (<100km from you) but beyond your lock range (>50km). The sentries will engage.
On the flip side of this, the drone control range is the range from YOU to the target. Not the drone to the target. If your drone control range is 50km, you could leave your sentries behind and fly out to within 50km of a target, and the drones will engage not matter how far from the target the sentries are. (Of course, optimal and falloff will determine if they actually hit anything). |

"Sniping" with sentry drones is only really viable at around 130km or so. Past that things start going bad fast.

Well said, I was going to make the same point myself. This is one of those quirks that crops up when you use the same mechanics for different aspects of a game that don't work quite the same way. "Drone control range" for mobile combat drones works just fine, but it's a total wash for sentry drones. If your sentries are inside your control range and the target is outside you can't direct them to attack it, but if your sentries are outside of your control range and the target is inside of it you can direct them to attack it.
Kind of puts lie to the whole "drone control" aspect of it when it works like that, no? Still, it makes for an interesting topic of conversation in noob corporations when you explain it to the new(er) players. |

I've had fun in missions where some rats got stuck on scenery 100km away from my Domi (85km targetting range). The rest of the pack were in targetting range so I targetted them, told drones to engage and the rats died. The rats outside my targetting range were aggroed on me and I though I'd have to move closer to them but NO! My loyal (and aggressive) drones engaged them without having to be told and killed them!

The crucial fact of the matter is that you cannot align while sniping, which in ships that sacrifice so much to sniper effectively usually cannot afford not to. http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/4375/mynewsig2.jpg |
