Seems that I am also one of the 0.3% that this CPU issue has effected. It would have been nice if we could have had enuff advanced warning about the new computer requirements so we would have had time to get a new computer. As it stands, my friends and I can no longer log in on Eve at work or at home and yes CCP i have canceled both of my accounts! (I can buy a new computer with the money i will save, lol)

Guess I picked a bad time to get rid of all those 3.0 GHz Pentium4 PC's I took to the recycling center last week because I couldn't even give them away. I probably could have made some cash.
Folks, there are plenty of CHEAP computers out there that will still run EVE just fine. You do NOT have to spend a lot of money to upgrade. If you do, you are doing it wrong.

This is what I mean! You blame CCP for your problem, but the issue was posted not only in the forums and dev blogs, but as a MOTD in-game! What, do you need a year's worth of advance to react to something? --- I just can't figure it out. If only I could pew pew with my mining laz0rs and make you go boom.... I am also one of the few who is now unable to play EVE, so i can fully understand people frustrations on this matter, I Have been upgrading / repair my old PC for years. Although the financial cost is a pain. I am taking this a good kick up the bum to finally get a half decent new computer.
On the flip side i have 3 accounts, all with varying amounts of time left, if I was going to quit EVE (which im not) would CCP be so kind to offer a refund?
I read the patch notes and noticed that there maybe a possibilty that my knackered old comp would struggle. It would have been better to advertise this possibilty on log in, to give people more time to react / comment on this.
CCP should offer those people who are unable to play some options / compensation, I luckily have used a friends laptop to update skill ques til feb when i can afford a new computer, but not everyone is going to be in that position or want to.
I fully sympathise with those others who cannot play EVE now.

Originally by: Zeronic I don't think they should have too, if your running a 7+ Year old machine it not their problem that you can't upgrade. Tigerdirect.com has some off-lease system that could fit the bill for less than $300 USD.
Screw Tiger Direct. They have DOA items out the yahoo!
Buy via NewEgg. I purchase roughly 5,000$ a month in equipment from them. From new Motherboards to networking clips.
I think CCP did a fabulous job at upgrading their game. My mother has a laptop, the first Toshiba Satellite to come out with Windows XP, supports a maximum of 2GB of memory. It needs to be upgraded, but she refuses to "change", she doesn't have the option of going out and spending 900$ on a laptop when she pays for Nursing School.
Point is; not everyone has an awesome paying job like I do, nor has a hobby that allows him to spend 5,000$ a month on computer parts. (I manage my own mini-server farm) I serve kids who want to run game servers.
Again, this is just from my point of view. CCP did a bold move, and it only effects less than 0.5% of the eve Population.
Let's see: EVE has a base player of, let's say 60,000 people...
60,000 x .5% = 300.
So out of 60,000 people, 300 can't play.
300 people x 15$ = $4500, while CPP makes, 59,700 x 15$ = $895,500 a month, that's just counting people who have one account. Just a quick thought. Not saying CPP doesn't care about those 300 people, just saying it was more cost effective to make this move.

Sorry for the Double post but..
GFX: EVGA GeForce 460 GTX - $150 Mobo: Gigabyte LGA775 Mobo - $80 CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 2.66Ghz - $170 HDD: Western Digital 500GB 7200RPM - $79 RAM: G.Skill 4GB DDR3 - $48 PSU: Antec 750W SLI Ready - $80 Case: Azza Hurricane Full ATX Tower
Grand Total: $740. **Disclaimer** I build this at 1AM, I'm tired. Could be errors, don't purchase thinking this is a full blown 100% setup :P This is somewhat shopping on a budget. If you wanted too, you could go to a Dual Core and get a Processor / Motherboard for 100$ total, you could downgrade the graphics card for a NVidia 9800GTX+ (I have this atm), could get a smaller Hard Drive and whack off 20$, many things you can do.
I play EVE on a 7,000$ computer, I also run 6 hulks, 1 orca, and a carrier at one time, but thats just me :)

I personally have been playing eve now since June 2003 ( with a small break recently), and with a few tweaks to my old system to keep inline : epox 8rda+3 xp2400 (clocked up a bit) 512mb ati gfx 2gig giel RAM 4.1 creative soundcard (dont flame the sound, it survived ALL ccp had to throw at it with 'issues' back in the day)
eve has always runs great and it works fine for other things i actually need it to do without breaking my bank every 6 months on 'shinies'
I personal think the time has come tho where i need to upgrade the core element , BUT i came back to eve unknowing until the DAY BEFORE the patch. Its cash i could have used on ebay to get myself a better mobo / cpu bundle instead of wasting it on a subscription. In this light, i dont blame ccp, but i also dont really blame myself too much either as i also like to play things like Baldurs Gate, Total War, Age of Empires (some of the oldies are the best)
Now if ccp were to offer the effected people, say, an account freeze with the remaining gametime uneffected until reactivation? or a refund of the remaining gametime on the accounts? (just an idea.... dont get on ya high horse and flame)

well here is an answer from CCP about the SSE2 issue;
2011.01.19 11:29:00 GM Renril ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hi.
I am afraid that it will not be possible to run EVE any longer with CPUs that do not support the SSE2 instruction set, this will cause players still using Intel Pentium 3 or older and AMD Athlon XP or older CPUs to not be able to run the EVE Online client. Athlon 64 CPUs are however not affected
What we can do for you at the moment is to make sure that you do not lose any subscription time you have paid for because of this. You can choose, if you want to be refunded for the time you lose or if you decide to upgrade your system, you can have that time added to your account when you are ready to continue.
I sincerely apologize that we were not able to give our players advanced notice on this.
Best regards, GM Renril The EVE Online Customer Support Team ---------------------------- So have funz buying the stuff u need for more play time !!!!!!!

If you're not affraid you can try to run cataclysm on a recommended config from 2005, it will burn the moment you get to a capital. That, if you can get past the 5 mins of stuttering every time you attack something.

Originally by: Zeronic Well it not like CCP has a old Intel P3 or AMD Athlon XP in their test bed, a user report this during testing of the test deploy on SISI. This was not in the planes for CCP. So some of the outsource/third party files that help run the game got updated and left out the old non SSE2 CPUs. So if the third party aware of this, I'm betting so but did any of them even tell CCP that was going to happen, doubtful. At the very least this it didn't happen on the day the patch for the expansion came out. I don't thing they are going to fix the issue, being as small as it is at 0.3%, plus with the limited power those computer can supply it a good chance that they can't make full use of the game.
if you had taken the time to read the sticky on this subject you wouldve realised that there were issues encountered...WAKE UP!!! X ISNT THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS ISSUE...EVEN THERE OWN TEST PEEPS HAD ISSUES...read my entry under WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP and you will see the same crap said agagin and again and again.....elitsm pure and simple between the haves and the have nots...but thanks for letting us know where you are in that spectrum

They do have:
OS: Windows« XP Service Pack 2 / Vista / 7 CPU: Intel Pentium« or AMD @ 1,5 Ghz or greater which supports SSE2 RAM: XP (SP2) û 1 GB / Vista û 1.5 GB HD space: 6gig Free Space Network: 56k modem or better Internet connection Video: 64 MB Shader Model 2.0 Graphics cards such as GeForce FX (5 series) class card or higher, ATi 9500, x300 series or higher and Similar chips from other manufacturers Drivers: DirectX« 9.0c (included) and latest video drivers DVD-ROM : 2 speed DVD reader or greater required.
On a further note CCP are phasing out Shader Model 2.0 support this will mean the line
Video: 64 MB Shader Model 2.0 Graphics cards such as GeForce FX (5 series) class card or higher, ATi 9500, x300 series or higher and Similar chips from other manufacturers
Will say
Video: 64 MB Shader Model 3.0 Graphics cards such as GeForce 6100 series class card or higher, ATi X1300 series or higher and Similar chips from other manufacturers.
So I would advise acquiring a system also capable of this.

Dude Seriously, I'm not exactly loaded in the real life cash department, But man you're complaining about using 8 Year old hardware to run a game that is constantly evolving. You mean to tell me in that whole 8 Years you haven't bothered updating anything in your system at all?
Ive had 4 high end Pcs since then, and as I said I'm not even what you would call middle class, Its a simple thing called saving.
Stop playing the game and paying for it. Put that money aside and save to get 5 Year old hardware.

Im not quite as mad as I was yesterday but still irritated none the less! Yes, both my wife and I still use older pc's although mine is not quite as old. As I stated before, yes, I am pc illiterate. Could someone who knows what all this is please explain why the programming cant support both sse and sse2? All that I know is that sse is part of the processor. Also, thanks for all the pc configs people are posting. It gives me an idea of what to look for when upgrading later on. 1 thing no one is putting into the price lists though is the cost to pay someone to install all your new hardware. The cheapest place around where I live the guy is going to charge 80$/hr to build it and it will take about 3 hrs. So there are more costs than just easily going to new egg or tiger direct to buy components. Anyone live around Tulsa Oklahoma that knows how to build? My wife and I will make the steak dinners and buy the beer! lol Im all for the upgrading of the game! Ive had to upgrade my vid cards before, although I didnt go out and buy top of the line. I even had to add a separate sound card to my pc. Whole system upgrade is a little different. For those out there who are saying, its only a small percentage of the subscribers who are affected? In business every dollar is important. When you start purposely segregating customers you are going to lose alot of business. My pc still works but my wifes dont. If this is not going to be able to fixed (which im still waiting for a petition response after the automated 1 i received)I will be suspending my 2 accounts since my wife wont be able to use hers. They said they would refund for paid gametime or freeze accounts. I spent the last 4 years paying, creating and building chars. Are they going to reimburse me since my wifes char was created since its now a product she cannot use? I know mine will soon be obsolete in game and that will make 2 pc's to upgrade. So take your lists and x2 and also add the labor x2. Maybe I was being naive but, I honestly thought you upgraded your pc's when you wanted to catch up with new technology. Now the game is dictating when and why you upgrade. We can have her account frozen to keep from losing playtime, great. I also have the choice whether or not to pay for a game that my wife no longer can enjoy with me. I know our 3 accounts are not the same as some of you all that run 5-10 or 15 accounts. 45$ is still 45$ a month. I just sincerely hope this can be a fixed issue.

Actually, 10 years old. SSE2 was launched in 2001. Like Tesl, I am pretty broke IRL as well for many nice toys but my PC still isn't 10 years old. I think my hardware is 5 years old.

CRYMORE?? two years ago CCP did this with their dual clients. they then merged the clients and 0.03% cried about not being able to play. then eve expanded by around 20k subscribers. same will happen now. quit crying ask mommy for a better computer and stop playing on your handmedown computer. if thats not possible then just give me your stuff. il make better use of it then your doing. as of this moment i dont see 1000 people complaining about the problem and that is approx 2% of eves total population. i see 50 people moaning.. go do the maths.. oh and those whining about not being told? shows how much you visit the forums.

WOW! That is probably the most witless post lacking of anything original or useful. I saw the "warning" post early on but had to wait to see if either of our pc's were going to be affected. My point is that in business you try to accommodate all of your customers. Not just select 1's and leave out the 1's that choose not to upgrade their system every couple years. Asking for ones stuff if they are going to be unable to play? Another WOW! That is the 2nd post I have read by your trolling and asking for stuff! Maybe your game time would be put to better use by making isk rather than trolling forums kicking people while they are down and begging for ships! If you, or anyone for that matter, have nothing useful or at least semi helpful to add? Then please move to another thread. Some of us are taking notes, investigating products and comparison shopping with the USEFUL information we are getting. Thanks

Yes. Two and a half days before the patch went live. TWO AND A HALF DAYS. That's not enough notice and you know it.
Originally by: Dare Knight What, do you need a year's worth of advance to react to something?
We need more notice than TWO AND A HALF DAYS, dude. Stop pretending that there was plenty of notice. Do you live in some fantasy world where pigs fly, purple unicorns frolic in the morning sunshine and computer upgrades can always be arranged, delivered, paid for, configured, all software installed and all patches downloaded and applied in the space of sixty hours with no possibility of extraneous circumstance to prevent you from meeting this ludicrously tight deadline?
Usually CCP give a few months' notice of impending changes to system requirements.
For the record I am also affected by this issue. The biggest problem with the issue is the lack of advance notice.

If the software supports SSE and SSE2 separately, it makes the software more difficult to maintain. At every point in the code where SSE2 is required, code would have to be written with an alternative code path for non-SSE2 processors. It would be a new source of bugs. An alternative is to develop code so it does not have SSE2 in it. Because such code does not exist for the latest version, it would involve some additional development and testing time to ensure that the SSE2-free code still works.
As a player who is affected, I would like an SSE2-free version to be made available that I may continue playing with my old hardware. However, that would probably be impractical. CCP's decision as to whether this is to be fixed can be considered according to cost. If it costs CCP more to fix the issue than they would earn by affected players not cancelling subscriptions, then they may leave it unfixed.

I really wish all these folks who come on here slating those who now cannot play eve would do one really just go away.
incidentally the lowest price i could find for everything proc/mobo/mem/psu/hard disk is ú115.12 (after a quick 5 min check on dabs) so those saying its 25 quid for a processor as above get lost
seriously though many people (like myself) have compatible bits n bobs kicking about from ever upgrading so they are not THAT hard to get.
plus those not au fait with upgrading a pc its pretty easy with the right help and advice which is more help to these guys than dissing them about their income.

Tbh, building a PC your self is a lot easier than you could imagine, after all things only slot on the board one way, if you have to force it, then it doesn't belong where your putting it.
All you have to remember is that a AMD CPU already does SSE2, and a Pentium 4 and above does SSE2,
Supported intel processors would be
P4 Pentium D Duel core Core2duo i3 i5 i7
Pentium 4 is plenty for running eve, just make sure its not the celeron, although its cheaper, its also slower, make sure you get the correct board for your processor, google is your friend there, and make sure you get the correct graphics card and ram type. if you can fit a plug to an electrical item with out blowing your self up, you can build a PC, hardest part would be adding the operating system, but again GOOGLE is your friend. there is no excuse why anyone couldn't build there own PC and put a working OS on it with updated drivers. as long as you can read and are able to type into google "how to install windows [insert windows version here] then there really is no reason you can no do this.
If your not sure what slots your mother board has for the graphics, or what ram it takes, put the model number or name into google and do a search, it will tell you all about it so you don't go wrong and get the wrong hardware to compliment the board.
and most of all have fun.

Edited by: Commandante Caldari on 20/01/2011 14:26:35 It's simple: hardware needs an upgrade time by time. When CCP changed the models and textures I had to get a new PC to enjoy the new experience. And now my expensive M17x can't handle DirectX 11 features. No reason to whine about - even if EVE would support dx11 - because everyone who's dealing with all this sh*t since ages should have realized: what you buy today will be tomorrow the technology of last week. Theoretically you can perma-upgrade your life. It starts with your mobile phone and could end with the faster and better version of your car. At a special point you have to bite the stardust if you can't afford the next step. It's how our tech age works and it usually will not happen unexpected. If CCP would take care about the ones who are temporarily damned to stay behind there would be no progress of development and adaption. Therefore they are forced to leave things behind for the next milestone.
